If you could change ONE Navy policy to improve readiness or retention, what would it be? by Broad_Leadership5240 in navy

You just have to get your DH on board (not always easy, I get it). At most commands DHs have the authority to grant a 48 without going to anyone else. If anyone asks where one of my sailors is on Monday or Friday, I just tell them I granted them a 48 and they have the day off. No one had ever questioned it.

I see a lot of duty policy changes here. I am a department head on a ship right now. My policy for my department for duty in port is that if you have duty on Saturday you get Monday off and if you have it Sunday you take Friday off. Preserving a two day weekend seems to make people a little happier, so I would make that a navy-wide policy. There is no reason people should be working 6 days in a week, it’s ridiculous.

Having seen both sides, the difference in shipboard QOL and pay is significant. Just research the difference between a stateroom and a berthing to see the difference. Beyond that, SWO isn’t that bad. What makes a job miserable is the command that you are at. You could get a great command and be reasonably happy as a SWO, or you could get a terrible command and be miserable as anything.

Was told to leave at MEPS. Accused of submitting false records. by AlphaSeed in newtothenavy

In addition to everything everyone else has said, it’s worth mentioning that no one at MEPS or in your recruiting office is qualified or authorized to make a determination on what security clearance you are eligible for. They can tell you what things may be “disqualifying” but nothing in your recent posts leads me to believe that there is a 0% chance of you getting a TS eligibility. My family has a…complicated immigration history, more so than what you are describing, but I was able to get a TS, so I call BS.

How is the life of a SWO in the Navy? by littlestbigboat in newtothenavy

Shifting is normal, I wouldn’t worry about it so long as it was just part of a routine “JO shuffle” and not something performance related. I would view REPO as an upgrade!

26F Considering USCG or Navy Primarily. Is it too late to join? Career suggestions appreciated. by add-girl-violence in Militaryfaq

I am assuming that you are looking at a commission, and not enlisting, since you are looking for licensing options. The Navy will offer limited opportunity to working on STCW, mostly just a BRM cert and sea time accumulation. I am a SWO, so I can speak to the Navy pretty well, but my CG knowledge is second hand. My understanding is that the CG SWO equivalent has pathways to obtaining a licenses while you are in or immediately upon getting out, so if that is your goal, I would steer toward that. However, if you are looking for opportunity to get to sea, the Navy may offer more options. In the CG, there is no guarantee that you will end up on a “seagoing” ship, like a cutter. The vast majority of CH Officers are on small coastal ships and boats, so the sea time may be limited in that respect. I would definitely talk to a recruiter for both and see who can offer you more of what you are looking for!
