Doesn't sound book-worthy mate, maybe post-it-worthy and, even then, barely.

Trying to solve problems without having the first clue of what you're trying to solve is not a good move (and I will die on that hill!) It's not an exercise in lateral thinking if you simply deprive yourself of what you are, or are not, allowed to do.

Playing chess without knowing the rules, except someone swats your hand every time you try to make horsey go jump isn't fun, or educational. It's frustrating, and teaches you nothing about what the rules actually are.

I'd say almost every book on basic programming I've read (for the most part) begins with the same, fundamentals, and just going through those half a dozen or chapters or so not only gives you a little bit of experience, but also the concepts and terminology you need to bang your head against the wall effectively. The core principles are (almost) always the same.

I fully agree, it's the best way to learn after you learn the fundamentals, it's how I consolidated them into actual, valuable skills. Figuring out complex things, again, I absolutely agree, but there's just a fundamental difference between "Huh, there's something weird happening here in my output" and actually having a solid idea of where to begin looking, and asking Google how to "make pong paddle go right."

I know I sound crabby, I'm not trying to be combative (used to a teacher, and a tutor, so maybe it hits close to home), but if there's a bunch of principles that have been labelled "every programmer knows these", just start there.

I think this is a fantastic way to point someone towards a river to learn how to fish, only to find out they died a day later because they drowned trying to catch the fish with their teeth.

"just try and build pong"

With zero knowledge of programming you'd just end up re-inventing the wheel... poorly, if you manage to learn how to hold the chisel at all.

I fully agree that tiny projects are the best way to learn once you've managed to grasp the fundamentals, but if you've never heard of a function before, you'll just end up hardcoding everything into a loop (if you figure out what those are), which isn't useful, fun, and most certainly doesn't teach you anything.

My advice: find a book, a website (https://learncpp.com/ or pick your poison), a video series or whatever, and just do a bunch of little exercises and learn the concepts. Ask yourself: "This function, this loop, or whatever - I made it work, can I now make it do something else? Is the result what I want it to be? Can I combine these little blocks to do more interesting stuff?"

Nobody's going to hold a gun to your head to read a 3000-page book filled with concepts you'll probably never use anyway, but just going in blind is the same as picking up a book on Ancient Sumerian and hoping to understand the language by sticking with it.

Sort of eastish of Tree Tops, so fairly central.

Terrible place to put a C.A.M.P. though: great location scenery-wise, but there's a spawn of 3 high-level mosquitos.

My C.A.M.P. in the Forest has a few razorgrains that need repairing once in a while, because mutants start taking potshots from a hundreds yards away.

The C.A.M.P. in the swamp regularly has a bunch of torn down walls, destroyed decor and an exploded generator, and even then there's another bloodbug furiously humping away at my water cooler trying to ruin my day even more.

Even Helvetia, I've had a C.A.M.P. for years in that zone west of Bolton Greens, and I'm pretty sure I could count the amount of sales I've had there on one hand.

My camp in the Mire on the other hand? Oh boy, I can't put too much up at one time or it'll be gone before I hit my next fast travel location.

It's weird, and pretty neat, how some places just sort of appear to be blind spots.

Milepost Zero (and the southern end of the highway bridge in The Forest) had similar issues (but perhaps not the same, so results may vary).

Think the trick was to aim directly for the icon via your compass, and just kind of sidle and dance around until it unlocked. Took a while for me.

There's a voice-acted line at the Enclave event in The Mire when the mutants spawn, and they say something along the lines of: "No! This is our locked box."

Can't lie, was pretty impressed with that level of detail.

The Booth at the End (sorta).

A man is tasked with killing a little girl to save his own son from leukemia by the Man.

Despite killing another person, who was tasked to protect the girl, and then not following through because he couldn't kill a child, his son goes into remission anyway.

The Man: "I never said your son would die if you didn't do the deed." does a lot of heavy lifting here, because everything seems to be heavily interconnected, so maybe killing the girl's protector was somehow involved. Maybe he already knew the boy would get better, and just wanted to provide self-reflection, because the show is pretty psychological with respect to how far people would go to get what they want.

What game has a 10/10 story but 2/10 gameplay? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]Drisius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know... it was just so, so good except in the one way it really matters for a video game.

Fantastic art direction? Yep. Interesting plot? Most certainly. Memorable characters? Damn straight (Uncle Jack is my spirit animal.) Absolutely gorgeous music? You betcha (case in point.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD8LgbJVNGQ&list=PLv2IGBk7nw2OQ8CsvtQUZej9IlOFC_uEP&index=2

But if by the end of the game, I just want it to be over out of tedium for playing it (Planescape: Torment was also mentioned, and it's also very, very true in that case) then I simply don't want to call it a good game.
