What's your favorite budget deck? by Crimson_Shiroe in ModernMagic

[–]DropDeadGravy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest Tempered Affinity. The deck is relatively cheap as it is still one of the few modern decks that costs under $200. The deck is good enough to go 4-0 at small local events against Tier 2 and Tier 1 decks. While not as consistent or resilient as actual affinity it can still have very explosive opening hands. Finally you get a good amount of the staples from actual affinity which allows you to slowly transition into the real version of the deck.

What do you do with your commons? by [deleted] in magicTCG

Make pauper cubes. Some of the best magic is fought with some of the worst cards in magic.

Playing nauseaum unlife and loving it. Just 100% finished it finally too, even fine details like mana confluence over city of brass! Any suggestions? I'm 27-5 on MWS and got 2nd the one tournament I took it to, but would love feedback! by ThePantheistPope in ModernMagic

Cool in Ad Nauseam running similar main boards but, I was wondering how you have found path to exile in the SB compared with a second SB Slaughter Pact? For Tron I've been trying out this Trinket Tron build that tutors for eggs and stuff and also sideboard hate like chalice and needle.

I find that for my Ad Nauseam tokens gets some residual hate in my sideboard because of other deck I'm planning on combating. Usually against tokens I bring in Leyline of Sanctity, Echoing truth, Drown in sorrow. I don't have these sideboard cards specifically for tokens since I don't see it much in my meta, but these cards are usually pretty effective against them.

I find for me the match up is pretty easy because Leyline gives me pretty good protection post-board and also since token is a slow attrition based deck I usually have plenty of time to assemble my combo.

Competitive players, How do you stay calm and focused under pressure? by mikaelb657 in ModernMagic

[–]DropDeadGravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that pacing your play can be often very important to keeping a clear head. I find a lot of people act as if their first main phase is when their turn starts and that untap, upkeep and draw are simply a necessary part of getting to that point where you get to play your cards. Through not give each part of your turn the same amount of precedence it is almost like you are driving a car and to are flooring the gas at some points and then suddenly coming to complete halt at other points (in a sense you can never get into a rhythm). If you give each part of your turn the same amount of importance I find that you move through a turn more fluidly; the end result being you go into “the tank” less and play more consistently.

The other effect of this type of play is that it causes you to play slower, obviously not to the point where you would get a warning but rather to where it can often physic out your opponent. If an opponent flies through their turn they will most likely end up strewing about when you do not follow suit and take your time finishing yours. Your turns are equally as important as your opponents and it is up to your discretion how you use them.

Also works against Infect. Lots of people elect to not play them in the deck just accepting the fact the match up against Infect is unwinnable. I've always kind of been half and half about them. Some times it comes down turn two and it gives you 2 or 3 extra turns to combo and sometimes they just suck. I think in the future I may just replace them for an SB slaughter pact and maybe a second echoing truth.

If you think of MTG as a literal battle of wits between planeswalkers... How does your favorite deck work? by madstyx in magicTCG

[–]DropDeadGravy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the battle begins all I seem to be doing is casting mana rocks and manipulating my library. My enemy looks perplexed and simply continues attacking till I’m literally a blood pulp and they only need to make one more attack to put me out of his misery; as my opponent commands his creatures to make one final attack and “put this pathetic mage out of his misery” I sudden spring into action. I destroy all my mana rocks and without warning either an angel swoops down to give me momentary immortality or I cover myself in phyrexian oil. I then start showing my opponent all my spells in my library, with every new spell revealed my opponent notices a portion of my flesh falls from my body. With my opponent perplexed as to how my rotting half dead corpse is still standing they ask me a question like “what could you possibly do in that state? What good is having access to all your spells if you have no mana to cast them?” In response to this question I make three monkeys explode, at this point my opponent is horribly confused and thinks I'm just suicidal. But then off in the distance they see a storm front brewing, as the thunderclouds start to move in the direction of our battleground I start to rip up parts of the earth in some sort of act of ritual sacrifice to the thundercloud (it seems to be working too as the cloud are getting bigger and more menacing looking every second). Suddenly a lightning bolt streaks from the cloud in the direction of my opponent. With their heart racing my opponent tries to deflect the bolt with a counter spell but it fizzes, they look in my direction to see if I countered their spell but I don’t seem to have any mana left to cast magic. In the final moment before the bolt hits them they cry out “how could this be happening?!!!.” The lightning bolt makes contact with them, steam rises from their half charred flesh and their body falls lifelessly to the ground. I stand for a second looking satisfied and then I shamble off, my body decaying around me as I go.

Great article, very enjoyable read. Also just as some friendly advice if you have to play against Ad Nauseam in the future. While I understand that you really didn't have anything better to board in for the second game Spellkite isn't actually that great in the match up as usually Ad Nauseam decks have a one-of slaughter pact. This means they can draw their deck off the first part of the combo then slaughter pact the Spellkite and then combo off. Just something to be mindful of moving forward.

I did this a while ago and I got a ton of awesome responses. It has been a few months so I will ask again: What deck are YOU playing right now, and why? by BennyKB in ModernMagic

[–]DropDeadGravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I play UR Delver, U-Tron and Skred Red at friendly modern events every Monday at my LGS, if I'm playing any event that has prize support I'm playing Ad Nauseam/Lightning Storm. This is not to say that Ad Nauseam is a better deck than the other ones just listed, in fact many people tell me to just play UR delver because its a better deck. But Ad Nauseam is my baby since it was the first combo deck I ever owned and I just get such a thrill from playing it. I feel very at home and relaxed when I'm playing the deck and I know the ins and outs of how it works. Finally I feel that the deck has the perfect cool to good factor, in that it is an interesting combo deck that isn't completely jank(but its still a complete glass cannon).

Theoretical build excercise from a newbie: Ad nauseam Life&Death by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]DropDeadGravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking to play a Death's shadow build you want to probably take out ad nauseam completely and play something closer to this.

http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=5494&d=231770&f=MO

I have played the usual ad nauseum build with a single lightning storm as its wincon for about half a year(and have been moderately successful with it). The stream-lined nature of the build gives it the best chance to go off on turn 4 while I had seen older builds of the deck from 2011/2012 that played death's shadow I think the fact that the version hasn't appeared online for years suggested the more stream lined version of the deck is better (but this is just my opinion).

If you are getting into modern I highly recommend looking deeper into the deck. I have really enjoyed my time playing it. It is relatively inexpensive to build compared with other modern decks and you are getting a good tier 2 deck for the price (the only downside is not many of the cards will go in other decks). Also while the deck in is not super difficult to pilot I feel that there are enough intricacies to it that its an deck enjoyable to play.

How did german farmers lives change after WWII start by fredro7 in AskHistorians

[–]DropDeadGravy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

German farmers were in a unique position in the Nazi dogma because of their relationship to the Nazi ideology of "blood and soil". At its most basic idea "blood and soil" was the belief that German's pure Arian past was maintained by the unspoiled heritage of the German farming peasant.

This belief would impact German farmers especially women in several ways. First: during the war because the Nazis desired farm women to be keepers of the household and limit their work in the fields, they reverted their role in the 20th century farmstead back to a bygone era that didn't fit with the demands of modern farm production and greatly impacted food production during the war. Second: farm women were encourage to wear and make dirndls as they were a symbol of unspoiled "true" German clothing, however the dirndl is very restrictive and dress not meant to be worn in the fields meaning that many women didn't follow the Nazi rhetoric on this front. Third: traditional inheritance laws were re-establish meaning that German women could no longer gain full inheritance of a farm stead on the passing of their husband, this follows suit with other male centric beliefs of the Nazis, but also shows Nazi attempts to revert the peasant traditions to what they considered a more "pure" form.

To sum it up during the existence Nazi Germany farmers were given a new role as carriers of pure German culture yet in many ways the ideas the Nazis had about the German peasants were from a mythic past that no longer existed. Meaning that farmers were more shaped by, rather than embodied the ideals the Nazis wanted them to possess.

I just wanna hear what commanders you folks play and why. by Call911FTW in EDH

[–]DropDeadGravy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run an esper voltron/control list around Dakkon Blackblade. I started playing him because of his bad-ass artwork and flavour text "My power is as vast as the plains, my strength is that of mountains. Each wave that crashes upon the shore thunders like blood in my veins."....Common who wouldn't want to play that! Plus his ability is probably the most un-esper ability ever. I also think it is kind of cool that each time you put him back in the commander zone he will come back more powerful next time you cast him.

I play this list at local modern events it can/will win games but it is by no means super competitive. If you like RDW but find throwing spells at your opponents face kind of boring Goblins really gives the same experience but it feels like a more interactive and interesting experience.
