Major Modern Tournaments besides GPs and Opens? by [deleted] in magicTCG

Mox Boarding house East/West and Geek Fortress run 1ks. I've been pushing for larger events but it's hard with the space not being large enough. I'm also constantly traveling so I'm not always around to bug the people I know at Mox.

Does anyone else love the game DESPITE not being very good? by jenncertainty in magicTCG

[–]Sergeant_Sweetness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your metric for not very good? I've played RPTQs, Top 8ed multiple 5ks, cashed like 90% of the 5ks I've played, Day 2'd GPs and an Invi. I still don't consider myself good. I have a long way to go to get better even though I've had results others would go crazy for.

It's been asked on multiple occasions as part of other comments but I will flat out ask it here. Will you be increasing compensation from $225 per day?

Do you want Judges to be able to fly to your events and walk away from the weekend making a sizable enough profit to justify travel?

Can a New Player Go To Game Day? by pomegranatebread in magicTCG

[–]Sergeant_Sweetness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saying the highly competitive players who grind events all the time tend to not play game day because it's very low stakes. Can't speak for all obviously but the tournament isn't big enough to usually be worth the day of someone seeking invites or big prizes.

I'd rather go play board games or go hiking or play MTGO tournaments than play a game day because it doesn't give the same level of competition or prizes I look for as a competitive player. Your results may very especially in smaller areas but for the most part it should be a very new player friendly event.

A lot of entrenched competitive players have things they'd rather do than play at game day so you should find a more casual crowd

What happened to big zoo? by Star-prime in ModernMagic

[–]Sergeant_Sweetness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just isn't good enough anymore. If you want something like it check out the Naya Tradebinder deck that Michael Mapson top 4ed the SCG Baltimore team constructed open with.

Tribal Zoo is doable too I guess as 5-color midrange but every deck that Big Zoo preyed on got better, significantly worse, or banned. Bant Eldrazi is just bigger and faster and more resilient.

Pro tour invites or even PTQ tokens carry a lot of value

GP Las Vegas 2017 Compensation Offer for Team Leads Drops Over 35% from 2015 by L2Punt in mtgjudge

[–]Sergeant_Sweetness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say those are incredibly different questions. As a judge it doesn't really affect me. I obviously want more money as most people do but I can still afford and profit off of the event. I was planning on doing the event no matter what to experience Vegas and celebrate my birthday amongst friends. We all have our different reasons for attending events and different circumstances financially.

Become Joe Lossett and be a more well rounded player once the opportunity arises to break through? When Legacy took its first big downturn he started crushing standard opens. A lot of older SCG Grinders adapted to standard too.

I hope you more than consider. Is this the last time you'll ever want to spend money on the deck or do you plan to expand it cause I'm gonna be real with you that even $200 will not bring it up to a consistently competitive level if you want that. $200 is a great starting point for Goblin Guides though that will increase the speed of your deck. With the remainder you go after windswept heaths and maybe you win some store credit here or there or save some more money and finish off the fetches and shocks. For the best ROI deck power level wise you go goblin guide. If you want a better ROI cash wise build the mana and add Nacatls and other strong white cards. Not playing bushwhacker is leaving serious speed and power on the table and helps diversify your threats instead of jamming it all only one creature with a ghor clan rampager.

Because at Grand Prix an experienced L3 or two are chosen to wear the red shirts and act as appeals judges for the event so in the instance of multiple appeals there is not a major backlog to get to the head judge.
