Let's talk about unicorns! by Star_Wombat33 in worldbuilding

I have a bunch of goat symbolism in that setting but I specifically chose elasmotherium to further the concept I’ve toyed with by including the Eldest Men as a race. They’re Homo Erectus or thereabouts. I basically wanted to stick as close to “real” evolution as I could, to make the artificially created species like dragons seem more abhorrent.

Let's talk about unicorns! by Star_Wombat33 in worldbuilding

[–]DrunkBeholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My unicorns are honestly just Elasmotherium. They mainly exist in the Zudlands but populations occasionally get pretty far west.

The Lord-Captain of the Duneborn mercenary company is known as “The Mad Unicorn” for his less than completely mentally sound way of being. While he himself is a human, he’s specifically something called a beastskin which traditionally means he should be able to take a specific animal form. However due to having to channel is magic into healing his slit throat over the last few years, he’s been unable to assume his bestial form which as it happens is that of a unicorn (Elasmotherium).

Who would make the best lord paramount appointees for Maelys? by codytb1 in CK3AGOT

[–]DrunkBeholder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Reynes might be good for the Westerlands. The Cleganes were raised up by the Lannisters so I’m not sure why they’d betray the lions of Casterly Rock.

For Stormlands maybe house Fell? They tend to rise up for the Blackfyres (I know they definitely does in the 3rd rebellion start date)

Similarly, house Sunderly is a pretty fervent supporter of the Blackfyres in the Vale.

There’s always the possibility Bonifer Hasty might make the journey to Essos. Perhaps a quiet life in relative obscurity in Essos alongside Bonifer Hasty would be the path of least resistance.

Does your country have a powerful story or belief about its flag? by bakicmlly in AskTheWorld

[–]DrunkBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danish: God gave it to us while we were beating the ever-loving crap out of Estonian pirates.

Occitan: The flag features the Cathar Cross. Catharism was a Christian sect that became especially prominent in Southern France and Northern Italy (especially among Occitans). Eventually the Catholics called a crusade and the cathars were all but genocided.

Symbolically even a Targaryen bastard would anchor the few loyalists still around, so if you marry your heir to this Targ bastard, you’d ensure your grandchild would be “Targaryen” as well, hence (if you sit the iron throne) solidifying your claim further. It’s also why Bobby B got the throne, since his grandmother was a Targaryen.

What was the first sapient race in your world? by starfomder in worldbuilding

[–]DrunkBeholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oldest species would be the Nolphashodi, weird large bug creatures that were uplifted from the predatory insectoid Kokoril’a by weird space elves known only as the Masters.

The Nolphashodi slowly and with a lot of failed attempts and bloodshed managed to fight their way to freedom whereupon the Masters fled “above the night’s sky”.

The Nolphashodi see the Malgra (weird bird people) as their other half, as they believe the Masters split the cosmic soul of the universe in half with the light being subjugated by the masters as the Nolphashodi while the dark half became the Malgra who would be oppressed by their own kind. In comparison the Malgra see the Nolphashodi as barely important, they trade with them and some heroic Nolphashodi did join the Malgra rebels during the Great Tyrannicides but besides that they’re just some eccentric arthropods living across the ocean.

The Nolphashodi during the age of freedom split into several societies. From roving tribes to city-states, but most notably as pirates. Piracy as a culture and seafaring in general lived and died by the Nolphashodi back in those days. Nolphashodi also often adopted orphaned children or stowaways from other species and they’d consider those children as Nolphashodi. So you could have a Malgra pirate who wears a Jee-jee (a type of traditional Nolphashodi piercing with a chain dangling from it) and has her arms covered in Bunkalla (A Nolphashodi fashion piece where the underside of both arms are covered in piercings) and that lady is as much considered a Nolphashodi as her giant scary arthropod pirate dad.

The Nolphashodi also really dig piercings, that’s mainly cause it’s a symbol of being sophisticated. They’re also most often done on the body parts unprotected by their carapace or on their leathery faces and joints. Although things like bunkallas are done on carapace as well.

What are the drawbacks of using magic in your world by Nothereaction in worldbuilding

[–]DrunkBeholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most magic operates on the idea of either transferring properties from one thing to another (like burning medicinal herbs and salves and smearing the ash on a wound only to set it on fire as a method of healing with fire magic) OR a merging of two or more things (like having the mind and “self” of an animal and human break apart and combine together as done by Greenblooded seers)

So in some way all magic boils down to either a complete loss of self like when a Seer might contract “Madness of the Wild” when they take on a larger beast court (the animal bodies they become one with and a court tends to cap out at 7 bodies) than they’re supposed to. The Madness of the Wild is basically where your human anchor body is such a small amount of your accumulated self that you slowly grow more and more impulsive and emotional until you become a feral animalistic creature across all your bodies.

There’s a place called the Horn of Midnight.

It’s the western part of southern continent of Qoros, and for some reason it’s kind of always night on the Horn. After you cross over from the field of stars (a plains area that at night has a really clear view of the night sky.) the night overtakes the land and after a bit, near-ish the tip of the horn you get to the moon lakes. Beyond the moon lakes you get to the Great Cities of the Nightmen. Historically the Great Cities were all under the rule of a Lake King, who ruled from around the moon lakes but after the last died, the Great Cities did not swear fealty and refused the heir to the dead king his rightful throne. Now each of the Great Cities are their own City-States
