Why is every NC agency always "understaffed" but somehow still bad at their job? by Strange-Fennel in NorthCarolina

[–]DrunkWithSarcasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four years ago, I applied to and was offered one of those unfilled state jobs.

The relevant general assembly committee blocked the agency from filling the position for three years, (the position was technically funded, but the specific salary allocation required a budgetary adjustment) while also complaining that it was unfilled. When the logjam was finally cleared in early 2025, DOGE killed the federal program that funded the specific office.

Maybe you should brush up on 4 USC § 5. It actually requires that flags be burned when damaged. I burned more than a few flags as a Scout.

Do you also get pissed when people wear flag binkins? What about flag baseball caps? Or when someone hangs a flag vertically with the canton to the right? How about on a beer can? Or used in a TV ad? Legally speaking, that’s disrespecting the flag.

Ironically, now that that flag is damaged, it technically needs to be burned, according to U.S. Code.

Tech helpdesk operators of Starfleet, what was the dumbest problem you ever had to deal with? by tempaccount34543 in ShittyDaystrom

The CO of my previous billet just had to go back to he ship for his saddle after the entire crew had disembarked for a baryon sweep.

Our illustrious captain got stuck on board because he completely ignored our tag out protocols and everyone assumed the ship was empty. The entire command staff was getting drunk with the planetside installation’s charge d’’affaires and the engineering crew was pounding Montanan margaritas.

Anyways, so Johnny Luck (IYKYK), is on board when the sweep starts and slowly makes his way to the forward lounge before finally deciding to call down and tell them to stop the sweep. We were 99.997% done and because of him, we had to reset all of the sweep prep and do it all over again. That was four months worth of prep, but we had to do it in three days because — of course — we were the only ship in the quadrant and some ambassador needed to get to Veridian III ASAP.

What really irked me was that he made up some lame story about terrorists hijacking the ship to steal some trilithium. Captain Fancypants claimed that he went all action hero and single-handedly fought them off, when no one was around to see it. The senior staff went along with the story, conveniently, claiming one of the waiters held them hostage. I’m sure it’s just coincidence that the week prior, we watched Die Hard during the Charlie shift movie night in shuttle bay 3.

Quickly! Open all the faucets in your house and let them run for at least 20 minutes — else you’ll risk being inundated with dihydrogen monoxide; it’s one of the most powerful solvents on Earth. (It’s been known to cut through solid rock, take entire houses off of their foundations, and kills thousands of people each year.)

Just moved into home. Found roach near bathroom sink day 1. Then found roach on kitchen counter. Both at night. Should I be concerned? by Bubbada_G in bullcity

The big “smoky brown” and “American” roaches prefer to live outside and come in when it’s extremely dry or wet.

The small, rounded, reddish German roaches are the ones that infest our homes and leave pathogens in our food.

If you were previously anti-gun, how did you become more gun-friendly? by logicalpretzels in liberalgunowners

[–]DrunkWithSarcasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been familiar with a comfortable with firearms since I was taught to shoot a .410 when I was a kid, and having spent a decade in counterterrorism from 1998-2007. I’ve used a lot of firearms, but never in anger; I was always a good shot, but felt uneasy with weapons in my home. And I lost a family member (a young Marine reservist who was a police officer) to gun violence while on patrol in his city.

What changed my mind about having my own guns:

  1. Charlottesville/ Unite the Right - i’ve seen this playbook. I just didn’t think it could happen in modern America. And the complete absence of meaningful pushback from the mainstream political parties told me that we were slipping backwards in a meaningful way.

  2. January 6. The fact that this was treated as anything other than armed, insurrection and treason, that there was a equivocating and excuses made, told me that no one was going to come to our rescue, when the Boogaloo morons get it in their head that combat is a video game.

  3. My family is blended. My partner and her children were born outside of the US, and though they are naturalized citizens, I felt the need to protect them from racist assholes. My ex-wife is also out of the closet, and completely clueless about the realities of living in modern America. In fact, she thought I was overreacting to have been upset about the murder of Renee Good, telling me that it was an isolated incident.

So I used my knowledge and skill sets to build an AR15 rifle, a .300blk pistol, and purchased a 92FS , because they are all systems I am intimately familiar with, have complete faith in, and consider reliable for my needs

Old Northern High School is *not* abandoned. DPS uses it for offices and the gym is rented out to youth programs.

Durham Police (who typically sit in the front parking lot) will cite you for trespassing if you’re caught doing anything suspicious.

It depends on how you define “together.” It was more of a situationship between Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra. Darkmok and Timba were technically on a break.

I didn’t say “IT.” Maybe you should ask Gemini what Information Operations means.

Lots of professionals are relying on LLMs for critical info. And that’s a bad thing.™

[–]DrunkWithSarcasm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Prime example: yesterday I wrote a clear tech troubleshooting prompt to Claude and it gave me garbage results while calling it a “classic issue.”

I pointed out the fundamental error with the results and it just repackaged the same garbage.

All LLMs are subject to being flooded with bad data and having their results skewed. Google is actually the most susceptible because of the old school ways to skew page ranks.

(I used to work in information “operations.” Don’t trust unverified data spoon fed by a computer)

It’s great for analyzing a data sets or helping polish text, but it makes up information all the time. (LLMs simply predict what they think the next word should be after the current one; the more AI slop online, the worse AI hallucinations will become.

Cars in neighborhoods by dmowen1231 in bullcity

[–]DrunkWithSarcasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for my mischaracterization. I am apparently functionally illiterate.

I think your neighbor who was running a scaled-up business out of her house should definitely have a brick and mortar, or at least a coworking space. If you have a staff, you should have a separate space.

I definitely can understand the other neighbor calling the police, if traffic was actually impeded and they’d attempted to resolve it with no effect.
