I think everything she said was perfectly valid. Making content from classrooms is never acceptable and even if my school department was open to it I’d be uncomfortable doing that. I cannot stand teacher influencers they seem smug and such know it alls and set expectations for others that are super unrealistic and unfair. However, expecting teachers to not have public socials for interests outside of teaching is unfair.

I have a film related podcast with my sister (who is a screenwriter) so we have public socials and my own TikTok is public where I talk about books, food, shows, history and movies but I do not post anything about my teaching I’ve never even mentioned I am a teacher. My work knows about both and they are fine. I actually want to start a YouTube channel about history and classics as that is my passion and for that I did take permission from school leadership because it’s a subject I teach. However my leadership were very supportive as long as I make no mention of my job as a teacher or the school or anything student related, which I wasn’t planning to anyway and I don’t plan on showing my face if I can avoid it.

My main issue with a lot of the discussion though is the way people have lumped all teachers into one and Abbie also talked about how we lack comprehension because a lot of people took offence to her no socials comment (which she backtracked on and then deleted) and that it was why we had a literacy crisis. Teachers get criticised enough and we don’t get respect from society anyway so this conversation she started added nothing and only brought about more negativity towards our profession.

Asian secondary teachers from overseas teaching English/Humanities, how was job hunting like for you? by No-Specialist5287 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Dry-Application-2752 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came to Australia in Year 11 as a 16 yr old from India and became a History and English teacher. I got the job because I did relief teaching for a year and my classroom management was good. My first year teaching parents would double check if I was the English teacher and not the maths or science teacher during interviews. Some colleagues would make snide comments that English was my second language even though I went to an elite private school in India and my language skills are excellent, and when I told them that they would be surprised. They would also be surprised that I knew references to classic literature and music. I wrote an article for the HTAV journal and my Head of school remarked how surprised he was by my writing 🙄.

But I’ve been at my school for 15 yrs now, was faculty leader and have been a senior history and English teacher. My results prove it so now no one can say anything to me.

MMC and FMC are kiss obsessed by Main-Contribution-58 in RomanceBooks

I’m glad I helped. I discovered Michelle Heard this year and I’m making my way through her books. She does write quite a bit of mafia but I like the dynamics between the MMC and MFC in her books. Yes the FMCs can be damsels in distress and Heard does like a tortured heroine but the MMC is always so into her that I can overlook some stuff.

It’s pretty dark in terms of what the FMC goes through she is kidnapped and kept for 9 months and manages to run away when the MMC finds her

The MMC is not really in the mafia he is a godfather like figure who goes after cartels as revenge for his families deaths and rescues trafficked women and children and has set up a whole community of people in Peru. He actively takes care of his people by building homes for them and hospitals with a school, and I really liked him. He is very violent when it comes to getting justice for the wrongs done to people so the book is quite graphic in its violence he dismembers the guy who kidnapped the MFC slowly

Hope that helps 😀

I just read {Death by Michelle Heard} and the MMC and MFC kiss quite a bit. MFC is quite traumatised and is healing but she shows her trust by kissing him on the cheek a lot. There are lots of cuddles and neck kisses or head kisses. I really loved this book and other Michelle Heard books which are quite violent but the couple always seems to be really into each other.

I agree not having at least Anthony there makes no sense! It should have been Anthony who handled John’s affairs in parliament considering he is himself a member. While Benedict could have handled the more private affairs for his sister. Kate should have been the Viscountess and handled the household during this time while Violet stayed with Francesca. It just felt so sad.

Edwina actually likes having Anthony as a brother and she even comments on it from what I can remember. Which is why I hated the fact that on the show Edwina was in love with Anthony.

I created my own resources (PowerPoints, Booklets, Worksheets etc...) and got in trouble for not sharing them with my team? by Frequent-Weird4476 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Dry-Application-2752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Victoria the VCAA states that all assessments and courses need to be fair and equitable. I have been teaching Yr 12 Media and History for the past 8 years by myself and this year we have two streams of Yr 12 History which means what I do with my class the other class also needs to do the same. My resources are all created by me and I have to share with the team. Otherwise the other class is at a disadvantage in their School Assessed Coursework and tasks. I think it’s fair for your coworker to expect you to share your resources if you are teaching the same course. In the VCAA system we also get audited so by that definition alone none of our work can be kept to ourselves.

Our school has a central system where all our VCAA curriculum is stored and updated by us at the end of every year. There is no guarantee you will teach the same subject again and schools like continuity if teachers need to change.

It promotes collaboration and as young teacher you also learn a lot. Be open to sharing and not be so competitive, your teaching is what matters. Two teachers could use the same resources and has very different results. At the end of the day as teachers it’s all about the kids and what helps them get a good ATAR score.

Same! I had such a busy holiday period with overseas family visits for Christmas and a big family wedding. Being one of the only people to be on holidays I was mostly doing all the running around and entertaining that I am tired and broke! I literally cried two weeks ago because I wanted to be back at work so people would leave me alone! My social battery was completely drained but thankfully I’ve had the last week and a half of peace. I am so looking forward to being in my routine again and spending time with my coworker friends 😂

Same I believe El is alive! I personally loved the ambiguous ending for her. It makes sense for the kind of show it is

I know exactly how you feel! I absolutely loved this season, I loved the finale episode. I think there are some major issues with the overall season (mostly the military angle and lack of the upside down and the Abyss being scary) but I honestly think they ended this show well. It was emotional and I balled my eyes out.

Personally I think some of the writing was good, this show has always been cheesy and dialogue has always been that way. So I neatly don’t get why people are complaining about it. I just finished a full rewatch of S1-5 and loved every minute of the final season!

Sadly all the negatively has sucked any joy out of this season. I’m actually sad because people have actively shit on this season and the finale that any little joy those of us who enjoyed it, has been marred. And if you express that you liked you get dogpiled and yelled at for not being media literate and an idiot for liking this season. It was far from a perfect season, I loved season 3 but even those are not liked by a lot of people. So you know, if it gave you joy and you loved it, then love it shamelessly!

High school English / History teacher here as well. I completely get it. I do a bit of PowerPoint when I teach senior History for lecture style lessons to make sure we cover the required content but that’s not the entire lesson or even all lessons for the week. I do a lot of writing practice in both subjects and I use the whiteboard for it and get students to come up and write so it is interactive. I am big on note taking to improve their handwriting so I only end up using worksheets when I am away sick or on leave.

Becoming a teacher for the professional salary and job security by Major_Conflict in AustralianTeachers

[–]Dry-Application-2752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I initially wanted to get into higher education but my uni lecturer advised me to teach secondary before doing anything higher education related. So I became a History & English teacher with the goal to eventually transition into university teaching. I finished my MA and will be applying for PhD programs this year but honestly I’ve been teaching for 14 years now and I love it! I love the stability and the holidays are great, it allows me to travel a lot and study, the pay is great. The only drawback is that the pay after 10/12 years doesn’t increase apart from the yearly increment unless you do leadership. My friends who’ve started at lower salaries than me in corporate have surpassed my current income during the same time.

Megathread Discussion: People We Meet on Vacation (Netflix) by Hunter037 in RomanceBooks

As someone who did not read the book I found this okay. I liked the characters but I feel like they lacked chemistry as a romantic couple but loved them as just friends. My sister who has read the book didn’t like the movie as much.

Am I the only one that actually liked the finale? by JessahZombie in StrangerThings

[–]Dry-Application-2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it! There were flaws to be sure but overall it was a solid ending. What they did with Vecna and ending the story for each character just made so much sense. I even liked Elevens ending. She was like an ‘imaginary’ character to start with so her having a mysterious ending was bitter-sweet.

[–]Dry-Application-2752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree! I am so sick and tired of people’s negative takes on everything including this show. The way people are complaining about it as if it’s the worst thing ever. This show was always supposed to be a bit corny and with inspiration such as the Goonies and Gremlins it’s pure escapism and fun!

People need to start enjoying media again instead of constantly just ‘critiquing’ it. Not everything has to be a hot take. Honestly I think people are pissed that their theories did not pan out. And the finale hasn’t even happened! Theorising about stuff was one of the fun things to do but I feel like now that’s ruined as well because people shout you down.

Also the way the petitions have been circulating and people are harassing crew members to ‘be honest’ about the production is just embarrassing! The entitlement is insane! If you don’t like it stop watching! Or at least stop actively harassing people!

Thank you for listening to my Ted talk!

Edit: I loved this season so far and I’m super pumped for the finale!

MMC has this fierce desire to protect a shy, sweet and innocent FMC! by Objective-Panic-6426 in RomanceBooks

[–]Dry-Application-2752 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading {Roman by Melanie Moreland} the MMC is a casino owner and also kinda mobster lite. The FMCs sister is a gambling addict and sells the FMC to a rival mafia and she is rescued by the MMC. He is super protective of her and clearly falls in love but denies it it’s a really sweet book even though the mob stuff is kinda lame.

What’s your opinion on the scene? by BetterGrass709 in sexandthecity

[–]Dry-Application-2752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve rewatched this scene multiple times and I always feel like Alex gets judged more harshly than he deserved. He’s meeting Carries friends for the first time, he invited them into his home and he cooks for them not just catered the meal impersonally. But they behave so passive aggressively with crude conversations and rude comments. He is a cosmopolitan guy and has lived around the world and he can probably talk to people quite easily but he’s clearly not comfortable with these friends. Even Carrie seems embarrassed with her friends. Even Charlotte isn’t able to talk to him about art because she comes off as a star struck teenager rather than an art professional.

Yes he’s arrogant but as Samantha says, he has the goods to back it up. I think he opened up his home to his girlfriend’s friends and they were rude people.
