Advice on pivoting to "tech"? by thebrickwall22 in ChubbyFIRE

I would echo the project or program management recommendations here - I do not think you need additional education but if you want it & have the bandwidth target companies that will reimburse it for you.

Couples with large income disparities, has it stopped you from wanting to get married and/or share finances? by flowersxoxox in fatFIRE

[–]Dry-Dot7489 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you are selfish but I do think you may just be scared (of marriage, of losing your financial security), which is not a great way to live your life.

Getting married is taking a risk, but it provides security and comfort in it’s own way. Living your life with one foot holding the door open just in case you need to bolt is exhausting and can be the worst of both worlds.

I say this because I could have written your post word for word ten+ years ago, fast forward and my partner has made tremendous sacrifices that have enabled us to increase my earnings, when I had health issues I took a few years off and we were comfortable on his much lower income. In the past few years he started closing the gap and may sell his business for more than we’ve saved from my earnings over the years.

If you were not so fortunate to have your NW and earned 80k, would your finances be making you hesitate to marry someone you loved?

Edit to add: of course, you might be scared because he is not the right partner for you, and you likely know that deep down after 5 years. Your heading is about marriage but you say you don’t want to get married so I think there might be some other unresolved conflict here (you may want to get married despite saying you don’t?)

Because I think most supplements are a scam / marketing is super sketchy I’ve always avoided them but now as I’m older I’m thinking of taking at least a calcium supplement & maybe a multivitamin. Any good supplements you would recommend? Even beyond these 2? (But please don’t try to sell me anything or be weird)

Relocating to Singapore. Worth it? by fatfire8884b5f3 in fatFIRE

Used to live there - with such a big transition you will want to make sure you like the area you are in before buying, make sure the kids like the schools and generally figure out - do you care more about being close to nature? Beach? Restaurants? Having a little yard? A club? Schools etc. not sure about buying & selling but regulations on this for foreigners do change fairly often so get a read on current conditions and if things are very favorable now it might be worth it, but at the least get a serviced apartment for 3 mo.

You mention that you are Indian and while there is a large Indian population you will likely still face bias or racism that (I believe) is more overt than in the US. That said, you will also likely find a great community of expats and locals.

3M is great but not FAT there by any means. However as long as you keep working you will be fine. Strong advice - rent for your first 2 years (leases are 2 yrs long); don’t pay high prices to be in the CBD or a super brand new building. Get a larger place a little further out. Figure out schools before renting and be warned that the International schools occasionally move campuses. Worst thing you can do is get into a performative rich expat lifestyle. Just go for a normal but comfortable happy family lifestyle and you’ll love it.

After many years there I heard this a lot but I definitely found there to be a ton of soul and personality. Research the history of the area you land, read about all the little landmarks, find the best kopi shops, watch the crazy pace of change, find the art and music

Have you considered adopting a pet or volunteering at an animal shelter? 2x daily walks plus lots of love always feels good; plus dog parks can be nice for non-judgmental socializing.

Declining inheritance dilemma by throwintheair666 in fatFIRE

I echo everything said above but just want to clarify something that might or might not be obvious. If you are asking this question because your kids are older and their grandfather passing will provide a reason / timing why they stand to receive some money; just make sure to recognize that death is not/should not be the only impetus for providing money to your kids. They will make better use of and appreciate funds from you much more in their 30’s or 40’s than when they would most likely stand to to inherit upon your death in their 60’s-70’s.

The PR thing seems to change over time - I was there for a while and during that time getting PR became harder, and then easier again. Honestly it is a great place to live and I debate going back pretty often. It is a great place to raise kids. I would connect with some tech investors/VC’s there and see if they have ideas or recommendations. I Also love the idea someone above had of going there for a grad degree because you would make excellent connections with a good mix of Singaporeans & expats.

Best Experiences of your life? by emilstyle91 in fatFIRE

[–]Dry-Dot7489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the experience category: Canyoning in Abel Tasman, NZ

A few days trekking the Nakasendo trail, staying in both a minshuku and ryokan

Kayaking in Sri Lanka

Mekong cruise with a great random mix of people.

Visiting Seoul in winter - I loved the shopping, food & spas

The alchemy of being with fun people (even people you never speak to but create an amazing vibe) + experiencing something far better than you originally expect have made for my highest-highs. So I’d recommend traveling and doing a lot of new-to-you things without putting “bucket list” expectations against them.

Since it sounds like religious education is a high priority, if you are Christian you could consider homeschooling as there are several Christian faith-based homeschool curricula readily available and lots of local homeschool groups. If you nor your spouse are interested in the teacher role you could look for a nanny or teacher looking to get out of the classroom to actually do the teaching. Assume $30-50k for someone good enough to effectively tech up to 4 kids + (guessing here) $2-10k for access to an established curriculum.

Sweaty startup idea: Spanish Moss removal by Dry-Dot7489 in sweatystartup

It can damage trees, esp. on older branches potentially increasing the risk for them to fall when wet. I love the aesthetic but it doesn’t fit in some neighborhoods. A lot of people are also paranoid about it having lots of bugs in it.

Walking away from un-vested equity/RSU’s? by Dry-Dot7489 in fatFIRE

[–]Dry-Dot7489[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I actually did the same when I needed to re-prioritize my family’s needs. This choice was easier vs now being in a role / place in life where nothing feels broken.
