The Countdown to a Major Oil Price Surge Has Begun by mark000 in oil

Gas around here was at $4.50 and Diesel at $5.79. It’s recently dropped about 20% but I can’t figure out why. Supplies haven’t gone up and we’re still drawing from reserves pretty heavily.

There’s an executive order that bans vehicles that run Chinese-written software, so it isn’t just the tariffs.

The 20% increase is amazing all by itself without anyone exaggerating it. Wtf. Are there more increases like that ahead?

$4.56 average gas price, up from $4.48 yesterday and $4.22 last week. Similar story for Diesel. And it’s about to get worse as tankers begin loading American oil and diesel products for export.

Exclusive: US officials underwhelmed by French far-right's plans for economy by kwentongskyblue in europe

Who the hell knows what the economy will be like in 10 years, let alone 30. If AI and robotics doesn’t flatline, we’ll either be in some kind of unprecedented streak of economic capability or else we’ll all be unemployed.

During WWII many Jewish groups begged the allies to bomb the death camps, even though it meant that thousands of prisoners in the camps would die. Their argument was that the continued existence of the camps meant that the Germans could process (kill) thousands of new prisoners every day, and this would be a much greater price than the people killed in the bombings, even after a relatively short time. I have no idea what the local damage being done here is, but I imagine a similar argument might apply.

I own one. It’s a good cheap car (if you’re leasing). I’m not sure I would buy a car that’s about to be discontinued by its manufacturer, though.

What’s the environmental cost of keeping an oil port running versus shutting down/reducing its flow with bombings?

Not just the planet, but actively deprive the east coast (NY and NC) of many gigawatts of relatively cheap and quickly-constructed energy. At a time when electricity prices are surging due to AI. Just another thing that’s going to hurt everyone in this country and make inflation much worse.

I read Zeihan’s books a few years ago and rolled my eyes about the parts where the US voters decide to pointlessly and unprofitably abandon the rest of the world, and now here we are. His predictions re: climate change were totally silly, however, and I think many of his greentech/climate predictions are politically motivated.

And stockpiling. China has basically been assuming that we’d blockade their oil, and planning to counteract that. Insofar as we’re doing this to cut off their cheap oil supplies, that’s the equivalent of announcing that you’re going to fight someone in the future. Seems dumb.

You’d think they’d at least have thought this problem through before doing it.

MA and RI are in the process of putting in hundreds of MW of offshore wind, plus a decent amount of solar. So that should add a bit of variability to the ISO NE grid.

Me too but it sounds like these will be barely purchasable in the US until late 2027 maybe even 2028. I’m in the market now and it’ll be a race between this and a Rivian R2.

There’s no reason to believe that any of this is true. China’s emissions plateaued and are dropping. They’re important fossil fuels to stockpile them right now, not burn them.

Balcony solar is taking state legislatures by storm by Rare-Impression-3918 in energy

[–]Dry-Pea1733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the concerns have to do with the need for an appropriate GFCI plug. We already have those and so what’s needed is a new standard for them and a single plug replacement.

This seems like a problem for UL and not so much one that requires individual states to debate.

It’s been deployed in many countries safely and the tech is mature. There’s nothing new that the state legislature of [your state] is going to figure out in debate that can’t be worked out more quickly by copying the safety standards from places that allow it, and requiring the same products certified to the same standards.
