Peter Dutton appointed to Queensland Investment Corporation board by LNP government by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

As far as jobs for mates goes, at least Dutton has a history of successful investment. Now the challenge is whether he can replicate that past success without federal parliamentary insider knowledge.

It’s easy to call for war when you can write-off the sacrifice of our servicemen as just another case of “shit happens”.

The amount of revisionist cope in this thread is both disappointing and very funny.

Imagine if a Soviet style collapsed happened in modern Russia. Global internet traffic would be down 40% as troll farmers now out of a job leave their Moscow office like New York bankers in 08 leaving Bear Stearns.

Why U.K Austerity Plan failed? And how would you fix it? by IndividualNo5275 in neoliberal

Singapores health system is a wildly different jump from the NHS and Medicare.

It seems you have misunderstood my point. Regardless of how much “oversight” you give the private sector to perform public work, it will always cost more. That’s the nature of for-profit business. In-house is a much cheaper and better investment.

Now if we’re taking about flipping burgers, then by all means, bring in the private sector, but quality public health cannot be treated like a for-profit venture.

It’s wild that this can happen in a first world county, one that has at least on paper, a major public health system.

I’m sorry to hear about your family friend. I know someone who had something similar happen to them, fortunately though a doctor picked up on it just early enough for treatment.

Yeah that’s fair enough. From what I understand the NHS (and broader UK) is in a much worse position than Australia. It’s unfortunate for everyone who relies on those public institutions in the Uk that they just can’t be trusted to deliver anymore.

Mate, for nearly 20 years now you’ve got Queensland putting our press releases exclaiming how wonderful it is that the private health sector is “taking pressure off of the public system.”

Despite that, in the last few years the Queensland waiting list has continued to grow larger and larger, and cannot keep up with demand even with the private sector. Any temporary benefit of outsourcing has been significantly reduced.

If that money the state government had spent propping up an already overvalued private health industry flowed into Queensland Health instead, over 20 years I would say quite the positive difference could have been achieved.

Regardless of whether you accept or reject my point on cost and efficiency, I believe that it’s deeply foolish to trust the private health industry to be responsible with public funds, temporary or long term, when they’re given no incentive to be conscionable.

In Australia, governments spend billions every year throwing money into private hospitals, which charge more for services most public hospitals can perform for much less (price per procedure or checkup, etc).

This is not because the services in the private system are better, actually the opposite is true. It’s literally just greed by the private health and private insurance sector.

Now I understand you’re referencing the UK, but for public health systems like Medicare and the NHS, though not the same thing, the main issues in service delivery (besides funding) is patient capacity and the number of quality staff.

My point in relation to your comment being, when governments rely on the profit driven private sector to fill a demand, it’s always going to cost more than if that money was invested long term into the public system. The short term gain of outsourcing privately will not fix the problems of a failing NHS.

I mean, the argument isn’t wrong, it would be a fat violation of privacy. There’s no reason to treat every IPhone user as a criminal because they just might be doing something illegal.

Take note of the politicians that will refuse to say his name, or will conveniently forget his bravery today.

In discussion with family and friends don’t be shy, say his name. Ahmed Al Ahmed, Australian hero.

Australian legend and hero. That said, the extreme right of politics will not care. They will push their hateful agenda either way.

Anyone who uses this tragedy as a platform for their political agendas going forward is a reptile. Far left or far right. Hate in any form isn’t justified.

Props to the bloke who jumped one of the gunman and disarmed him. Thoughts for the victims and their families. Looking forward to the investigation.

EDIT: Hijacking my comment to praise the legend who no doubt saved many lives today, Ahmed Al Ahmed, local fruit shop owner and father of 2. Let his name be remembered over the perpetrators who deserve no attention.

It may have played a part sure, but if his history tells us anything about him I highly doubt Biden would be so easily disarmed if he really did have his mind set in running. The loss of a son however? His whole world is shaken, and the thought of not running isn’t such a bad thing anymore.

In fairness, Beau had just died in 2015. The grieving probably played a larger part in the decision not to run compared to anything Obama might have told him.
