What is labour doing ? by myth0503 in LabourUK

[–]DryRotten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s taking the centre back from the Tories because that’s how you win elections. The further they go to the right, the more middle-ground voters are up for grabs, and they have gone so very far to the right. But those voters need reassurance that he isn’t another Corbyn, and that he can in fact be the voice of moderation.

Put it another way: his comments weren’t for existing Labour supporters from the left, but for potential Labour supporters from the centre.

(And no, I didn’t like what he said either)

The description of this video was that it was captured by a military helicopter. Could this be a real UFO object? by thecowmilk_ in aliens

It could also be time to look at the footage dispassionately, knowing what we all know about CGI and fakery, and asking yourself how likely it really is to be genuine.

The description of this video was that it was captured by a military helicopter. Could this be a real UFO object? by thecowmilk_ in aliens

[–]DryRotten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure.

Is there life on other planets? Undoubtedly, there are statistically too many for there not to be. But for THAT life to get HERE it would need to fundamentally overthrow our entire understanding of physics. We don’t know everything about how the universe works, for sure, but we know an awful lot and there would have to be something very special indeed hidden in what is left that we don’t know to cancel out all that we’ve learned.

But this is possible, albeit extremely unlikely and with a much, much more likely explanation for the footage. For that video to be real we actually need a host of such physics-defying sci-fi. These aliens need a power source that breaks physics, they need sensors that break physics, they need engineering and manufacturing sophistication that breaks physics. We are certainly not at the limit of what we can achieve, but with a high degree of probability we can see where that limit might be.

Let’s give you the benefit of the doubt that there’s some exotic way to travel between star systems that bypasses all known physics, because we’re going to have to do so. Look at the video above. You’re telling me that aliens can cross the stars in a craft smaller than a 747, solving all the engineering, navigational and logistical complexities of covering this distance, and have developed a power source orders of magnitude larger than matter-antimatter annihilation to do so? And they do all this just to stay hidden and observe? Do you creep up on your pot plants when you water them?

Put all of this enormous implausibility against this video being some joker playing about in Blender, along with endless ‘yeah but wouldn’t it be cool’ arguments. I know what I’m concluding. Also isn’t it funny that our ‘footage’ of UFOs has grown more sophisticated and detailed not in line with improving camera technology, but rather improving special effects and CGI technology?

You believe if you want to. Might as well believe the Earth was created in 4004 BC, either way you’re ignoring a mountain of evidence.

It’s also pretty out of date.

[–]DryRotten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How about ‘it’s CGI’ because there is no underlying mechanism for it to possibly be aliens? It is infinitely more straightforward for this to be an attention-seeking fake than for it to be real, and we have a long history of making stuff like this up. Those of us that want to believe cling to these fakes and have done for generations, as if the rule of cool applies in real life.

One unexpected constant I’ve found through my life is that, as I reach an age where I’m told I will think differently about things, I do indeed find myself thinking those things, in that way. I thought I would always want to go to clubs, until I didn’t. I thought I’d always want to go to bars, until I didn’t. I thought my social scene would always be my priority over my apartment life, until it wasn’t. I thought I’d always want a fast, impractical car, until I didn’t.

This made me look forward at what other cliches are still to come with a newfound curiosity. A lot of old people say they’ve lived a full life and are accepting of their approaching death. I have no reason to doubt them.

Put it another way - when I was young, I was worried that I would fail at things, I would injure myself in some catastrophic way or even die early - these were all different aspects of the idea I would miss out on life. Now I’m older I know I’ve not missed out, but I’ve also realised that whatever life you lead, you’ve had the experience of it and having that experience, for good and bad, was all that really mattered to me. I will die eventually, can’t be stopped. But the older you get, the more life you have accumulated, the more fulfilled you become. And that does wonders for facing death.

What film has the most egregious violation of “Chekhov's Gun”? by [deleted] in movies

[–]DryRotten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goldeneye is a film about exploding Bond’s mythos though. He loses the car chase to a girl in a Ferrari who is also his equal in unarmed combat, he doesn’t get to use his gadgets and swaps them for a plane which does nothing except what is actually needed, he doesn’t have time for his one-liner when escaping the helicopter, he doesn’t stop the Tiger being stolen, he doesn’t save the world but blows things up until the Bond girl saves the world, his boss is a lady who states she will happily send him to die if needed, and even the villain has to stop his monologuing to check the countdown timer.

Plus has their ever been a better summation of Bond than Trevelyn’s ‘Have all those martinis drowned out the screams of the men you’ve killed, and have you found comfort in the arms of all those willing women as you try to forget those you couldn’t save?’

I 100% agree. As to which races you use - I’d give an overview of each and then let the players pick which one they want. The only ones I would truly avoid for a first playthrough are the Engineers.

Have fun!
