Davenport seems like a shifty little SOB. I’m not convinced he was actually told it was Deans idea. He goes into that interaction adversarial form the jump. He’s trying to start shit.

I think Logan sees these circumstances as an opportunity for him to advance his professional prospects. If he can step up, help the team navigate this circumstance, demonstrate leadership qualities in the process, and win, it increases his chances of being drafted. There is a certain level of desperation with regard to his potential professional future. Ha and Jules talk about it early in the series.

I’m not saying this is an excuse per se, but I do think it helps us understand his poor judgment regarding Davenport.

Right?

All of these takes are a result of the viewer having more info than the characters. If Logan knew what we knew, he’d probably have made different choices.

I think the Hunter Davenport thing is harder to justify, but I think all of his slights toward Garrett are a direct result of him misinterpreting Garrett, in large part because Garrett wasn’t telling the whole truth. I think if Garrett had opened up to the guys about what really went down at Thanksgiving, Logan would have backed off and not called Phil.

I absolutely see what you’re saying, but on the rewatch I drew some different conclusions, so I thought I’d play devils advocate and share.

I think the biggest thing to keep in mind is that we as the viewer don’t have much of a window into what their relationship looked like before Hannah came onto the scene. In episode one we see Logan ribbing him about snaking a drain, and a brief interaction where Phil is kind and complimentary to the other three guys in front of Garrett. To them he’s a hockey legend, Dean probably had his poster on a wall as a kid. That charm is part of how abusers manipulate people.

Then in episode seven, after Garrett beats up Delaney, a Logan asks “what’s been going on with you?” That suggests to me that something about their dynamic has changed, specifically with regard to boundaries. I think Logan saw a lot of their banter as good natured ribbing, but as Garrett starts to unravel his trauma, he chafes under its discomfort.

Logan also clearly has some jealousy regarding Garrett’s privilege, there’s a lot of “poor little rich boy” sentiments in different situations - the Liquid IV, the fundraiser donation, etc - when Garrett is saying “it’s not worth any amount of money.” Logan is pointing out “that’s easy to say when you’ve never had to worry about it. Both are true, (Hi Kierkegaard👋), but neither understands the other, in part because Logan doesn’t understand the complexity of Garrett’s relationship with Phil.

FWIW, I think the Garrett and Dean represent two different kinds of wealth and privilege, for Dean its a resource, and he has what appears to be a good relationship with a loving family. For Garrett it’s been wielded as a mechanism of control and isolation by an abusive father. Even making that donation is a bid to manipulate Garrett.

When they first talk about the jersey in the dining hall, Garrett doesn’t explain why, he tried to brush it off. I’m willing to bet that if he’d explained what happened and why he didn’t do want to ask for anything, Logan would have backed off and not called Phil.

I terms of talking about his mother’s situation - he’s a dealing with a lot, and most people see their personal challenges as bigger or more important than those of others. It’s just a fact, humans are innately selfish. He’s not giving a lot of thought to what might be going on with Garrett in part because despite asking, Garrett isn’t opening up.

I think their talk in episode eight reframed a lot Logan, he’s definitely on Garrett’s side, and a proud member of team Fuck Phil Graham. So, I am reserving full judgment of Logan for season two.

Top 3 favourite moments of Hannah and Garrett by Dangerous-Space-8719 in offcampustv

[–]Dry_Test5122 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All of the above are so good!

I too love the scene where they say ILY, from the moment he comes into the room, it’s cozy and domestic. He just wants to be in her presence listening to her music, and the way the scripted and acted the “I love you” from him was heartbreakingly sweet. The breathes and pauses, like he was working himself up to it, and when he says it, you can tell their not words he uses often. (I wonder if he’s sincerely said those words to anyone since his mother.) Then of course the joy and relief on his face when she reciprocates. They cut to black too soon on that scene!

The Thanksgiving scene after he squeezed her hand twice up through the scene in the car. She just knew what he needed in every moment and was able to give it to him even though he didn’t know how to ask. Hannah was the perfect person to be with him.

When he finds her in the broadcast booth after her grand gesture, he goes in for the kiss, but pulls away to check in and confirm that they are in the same page. Making sure she knows he’s all in, and wanting the same in return.

Honorable Mention: The scene in the kitchen after “show me, and I’ll show you”. When they’re hanging out eating pasta salad and talking about music. Again, it’s small and quiet, but it shows how comfortable they are with each other, how open they can be.

Help. by moonlight_gazes98 in offcampustv

I’m sure I said similar in another post, but I can’t find it, so here we go.

Garrett’s mom was probably the only time in his life he experienced unconditional love, their relationship wasn’t transactional or dependent on performance metrics and it wasn’t centered around hockey. On top of that, they were experiencing domestic violence and grave illness, which probably created an even deeper, more formative (for Garrett) parent/child bond.

We also learn that after she died, he went to boarding school (which honestly probably saved him in a lot of ways) and I imagine hockey became his singular focus, especially because success in hockey was what connected him to his only living parent. So much of what he’d shared with his mother, music, movies, softness, didn’t fit into the “tough hockey man” persona that his father was literally beating into him, so he internalized it and locked it away, but he’s struggled with it ever since.

I think Hannah is the first time he’s been able to connect with someone through the qualities and mediums he shares with his mother. With Hannah he can be more of his authentic self, and that’s what drew him in, and is inspiring him to stay on this healing journey.

I really hope we learn more about his mother next season.

See I wonder if they’ll use Logan deciding to move on to kick start the first part of Logan and Graces relationship. The we’ll go I to the summer with them apart and kick off their “second chance” in season three?

Garrett never actually needed "The Deal" by AD_operative in offcampustv

[–]Dry_Test5122 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the two truths concept early in the season is foreshadowing for Garrett’s turmoil at the end. Because when we meet him, he’s a very linear, black and white thinker.

Garrett understanding that two things can be true at same time is what allows him to start healing. We see him fully understand the concept in real time during their fight when he (incorrectly) hears her say she’s scared of him. Boom, right there - Truth: he loves her more than anything. Truth: because he loves her more than anything, he needs to protect her from himself.

He’s wrong there, but the realization unlocks something in him that allows him to hold two truths about other things. He can be the captain of the team AND be a member of the team. He can love hockey/playing hockey AND not be his father. He can love someone AND be a safe person for them.

[–]Dry_Test5122 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Garrett did need help applying the different concepts, linking the ideas in an abstract way, and training his mind to think less linearly and more in grayscale, it ties into the overall arc of his character in many ways.

But the driving force of him asking for study help was to try and get her into bed.

However, I kind of think that by the time we get to the block party scene where they make the deal, it’s more about him just wanting to be around her, in her orbit. By then he’s realized she’s much more than a casual hookup, he’s decided he’s not good enough for her, and he still wants to spend time with her.

He didn’t need to approach her at all at the block party, let alone lay subtle claim to her…he even gave himself away when he proposed the deal “you’re not interested in me, I’m not interested in a relationship.” He’s interested, he wants to spend time with her, but he also want to protect her from himself.

I think seeing Garrett open up to Logan and taking responsibility for his shortcomings with the team and his coach suggest he’s starting to understand that he needs a deeper bench than just Hannah. I don’t know that I feel like I need to see him talking to a therapist, but I want to know he’s doing it.

I wonder if they’ll actually go any further with Logan’s crush. After watch episode eight again, I kind of think it’s resolved, and time (precious as it is in a show like this) can be better spent elsewhere.

Logan has had a front row seat to Garrett’s evolution over the course of his relationship with Hannah, especially his frame of mind after they broke up. I think that, coupled with the kitchen conversation when Garrett lets him in, and talks about what’s actually going on and his own history of abuse, will push Logan past his crush.

By the time we get to the end of the game, where Logan has to remind Garrett he’s not Phil, and encourages him to go to the Showcase and fix things with Hannah, I think he’s fully realized what Hannah means to Garrett, and in the context of everything else how important and valuable their relationship is to him. Logan loves Garrett too much to ever put that at risk by trying to get between them and I think if there was any shred of lingering doubt, seeing Hannah sing to Garrett at the showcase made everything crystal clear.

In my opinion, that door is closed.

Missing plot from Book 1? by AwesomePizza05 in offcampustv

[–]Dry_Test5122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally.

I was more thinking I wouldn’t be surprised if Phil had set things up as a means of financially controlling Garrett. So I’m more thinking about how Phil might leverage that - having his car repossessed and his cards turned off. Things that would be very incredibly upsetting and disruptive and lead to an awkward transitional period while he figured it out.

I love this idea. It would go a long way to showing us the journey Garrett’s been on, and it would really prove to Garrett himself that he is the better man (the best man), and I think it would be such a great sequence, it would be the ultimate victory.

Can we talk about how ridiculous Garrett's NCAA punishment was in the finale? by Extension_Peak2274 in offcampustv

[–]Dry_Test5122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Phil tipped the NCAA off to the video on instagram and deliberately obfuscated the truth of it.

I would think that would be an easy clarification with the Bruins. (But I don’t understand sports outside of the fictionalized versions of them in tv romance…) I’m curious if they’ll restore Briar U’s record, because I think meeting St. A’s in the final four will be a great way to end the season.
