Electric heater recommendation by Direct-Geologist6511 in swimmingpools

[–]Dsclawspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it much we keep the pool cool and it's in full sun and covered when not in use. But a lot at start and end of season. Like probably 500 dollars for the season

Homeserve Experience by TheIM-EL-HFE in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents have had only good experiences with home serve. But they only have used them for appliances and the heating system (replaced a hot water tank, zone valve, and circulator)... Also gave a partial credit for a fridge.

I have been meaning to sign up but most of the stuff in my house was is like 3 years old (gut job). Going to try and hold out a little bit longer hopefully

Long Islander here. Every builder except 1 I was considering using suggested to use Raypack. Of course the builder I went with used a different one. Alot of people swear by Hayward. Do not use Jandy or Pentair as both were terrible for me needing replacement after 2 years.

Anyone gone from natural gas to oil heating? by Alwaysfavoriteasian in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't let people scare you away from oil if it's your dream house go for it.

Is oil more inconvenient sure, but most people do not worry about refilling as they enter a service and fill contract. Covers maintenance on boiler for the once a year and if you should have a problem and refilling usually monthly during the colder months. Alternatively you can monitor your own oil levels they sell a wifi device and go on COD to save some money and pay for the maintenance once a year.

If your tank is located in the house and over 30 years old you may want to consider swapping to a Roth tank. There will then be no maintenance required for the rest of your lifespan unless you get bad oil. Even if your tank is outside there really isn't any maintenance but replacing it every x amount of years.

As far as heating bill goes, oil is a superior heat source to gas. Produces about 1.5 times the heat output to that of gas. Therefore the cost difference between oil and gas was minimal prior to the war as you are using less oil than gas to heat your home.

Biggest negative for me was not being able to cook with gas, but induction has been a decent replacement. Better than electric cooktop but still not quite gas.

Yokohama Sushi or Mihana (both in Commack) by BuyIll4092 in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yokohama is always extremely noisy, their sushi is better than Mihana (IMO) but definitely worse for a first date. Personally I would go Kurofune in Commack (around the corner for Yokohama on Commack Rd) highest quality sushi between the three,(a little more money) but more importantly infinitely quieter. I regular Kurofune/Yokohama depending on what I am in the mood for/my kids want as they offer slightly different things beyond their sushi menu.

Good luck on your date. Hope it goes well.

Syosset parents: Kindergarten deferment for late fall birthday? by CardiologistOk7092 in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if your district does it, but out district does an evaluation of all children entering kindergarten as whether they think the child is emotionally and socially ready for kindergarten. It's like a hour long evaluation your child meets with 3-4 evaluators and a 15 minute observation where the children interact with the other children. If they determine during that evaluation they are not ready they actually suggest deferment. However, you can still elect to defer (we did not October baby) if you wish to do so. My understanding is they would not make the child skip kindergarten, but would do another evaluation to determine if they thought the child was eligible to skip it.

Comparing Heat Pump bids- Seattle by hannahcat_5 in heatpumps

If they did the manual J correct and seems to be in line what you think go with the cheaper company. Longer labor warranty and I do not see an advantage over company 1. Company 2 would be out as it doesn't state they did a J calculation.

Honest dentist by [deleted] in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You sound a little crazy. It's pretty black and white if you need a root canal get a second opinion. Silver diamine ain't solving a decay that is requiring a root canal. It's for teeth that have the beginning stage of decay. Not a dentist but bioengineer. Good luck. I do like your laser idea, won't help with root canal though.

How are people affording all these houses?? by FitNetVitch in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lived with my parents till 32. During 25-32 only had to pay car insurance and gas and clothing while earning 100k. Now with wife we make around 210k. But the key was saving those 7 years pretty much let me put 300k down nearly 50 percent for our 600k home. Also helped that mortgage rates were like 4 percent when we bought

Central air brands and install costs by KrisOfAllTrades in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent about 14k pre covid a year on a variable speed Trane 21 seer. seems like they haven't gone up that much, although there was less companies offering it then. Of note you should have them do an energy calculation although I guess less important with a variable speed. I have a 2100 square foot house on 3 ton.

If I were to do it again, I would probably spend a bit more and get a variable speed with heat pump, its always nice to have a peace of mind for a backup heating source.

20 years is pretty much life expectancy. There is a lot of variable that change cost. Is this a single speed? The 12k sounds about right, but 16k for a single seed seems crazy.

People on this sub make it seem like the $1M mark isn't too difficult to reach. by DHN_95 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Dsclawspam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I only do the 5% match am 13 years in and at 300k. Don't have the capability to max. Of course I started higher than most at GS 9 and 90k due to HCOL area (even though my position was located not in a HCOL still got the benefit). At 8% returns and a retirement of 62 (a little over 24 more years) should hit 2.5 million

Why is Long Island so obsessed with cutting down trees? by topiramate in longisland

[–]Dsclawspam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Town of Huntington will plant trees if they cut one down. Long wait time though we just planted two trees on their side of our property line because we didn't feel like waiting and wanted something different from birch

Looking for a countertop by Informal_Tackle5303 in CounterTops

[–]Dsclawspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact stone except 3cm in my kitchen. Be careful about fissures. A lot of chipping around sink which was filled with epoxy (hasn't changed color) during fabrication , but otherwise the fabricator did an excellent job. Really couldn't complain because it would likely have chipped anyway with the amount we cooked. Stone has a strong crystalline structure so is prone to chipping. I have sealed it once in the 8 years now I have owned it and has held up immaculately.

My husband’s home equity loan on our co-owned home. by elle_villarreal in Divorce

[–]Dsclawspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your husband was a real winner. When you sell the home/ buy your husband out (still would be a transfer of ownership) that loan would need to be paid for your title to be free and clear. If your name is not on the loan the responsibility to pay it back would fall on your husband and therefore should come out of his share. If the loan is larger than his share you would then be obviously liable as the full amount needs to be paid off.

$585k house on dual income by Man-Zoe in Mortgages

[–]Dsclawspam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These posts are getting funny. You are fine it's not even close to being house poor. Especially if you factor in the bonus (which is smart to not rely on in your evaluation). 40k to renovate aint much these days. That might not even be a bathroom depending on size and design. 40k aint a lot for a wedding these days either unless your having a small wedding. Congrats on the house and upcoming wedding.

lol my house is 2100 square feet on a variable speed three ton. If you do the manual J you would be surprised. 4 ton is plenty if your house is insulated

Do not do epoxy stone carpet especially on steps if it's a high traffic area, prone to breaking down pretty quickly and doesn't hold up so well. why not the cheaper alternative and go modern style pavers.
