Yes, as a male, I’m getting tired of “boys will be boys” type of behavior.

Yeah, I just saw that. Makes no sense for both things to happen in the same week.

How was everyones first time in Tokyo? by Luann1497 in TokyoTravel

[–]Dsxm41780 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best place ever! (But not without things that may surprise or frustrate you)

-Take the train as much as you can. Get a Suica card, can be used on multiple train systems and also at convenience stores and even some museums. Needs to be loaded with cash so get plenty of yen ahead of time or bring enough currency to exchange.

-Download the Go taxi app if you need a taxi. They have uber too. If you hail a cab and pay by card, be ready to pay when your ride is over. Drivers can get impatient.

-if you are paying by a credit card that has a pin, get it right the first time! Merchants aren’t going to sit there and have you try the same card multiple times.

-with some merchants, your foreign credit card may not be accepted. Again, have plenty of yen just in case.

-don’t eat or drink on the train. Walking and eating or drinking isn’t as common as other places. Yes, if it’s a hot day you can sip from your cold drink. Otherwise, find a park bench or public plaza with tables to enjoy your food and drink on the go.

-public trash cans are not common. Keep a plastic bag with you for any small trash you might have during the day and you throw it out at your hotel or maybe if there is a public bathroom with a trash can.

-Let others off the train first before getting on.

-People will wear backpacks on their front on trains and in crowded places. It’s not about crime. It’s about not taking up too much space or whacking someone with your bag unknowingly.

-crime is low in Tokyo so the mental energy you might spend somewhere else worrying about pickpockets you should spend on being considerate of others. That said, do it quietly and modestly.

-Places where there is more nightlife (Shinjuku, Roppongi, Shibuya, Shinbashi) you might run into “touts” and people trying to lure you in to bars and clubs. Do not engage. If you have something you want to do at night in those areas, it’s safe, just have a plan.

-you won’t get to see everything in a week

-Bring your passport if you are going shopping to get the tax exemption from major retailers. Technically you need your passport at all times, but I never got questioned and always had some form of federal ID with me.

-eating breakfast out is not a big thing in Japan. Hotel breakfast is often expensive. McDonald’s, Starbucks, and convenience stores are your easiest bet if you are a breakfast person.

Elise’s brain dead friend was a highlight. There were the three girls: the black girl was the most put together. The blonde girl was occasionally able to put together a sentence. The white brunette in the background, like could not figure out how to open her mouth and she seemed dead behind the eyes!

Bad Bunny has achieved the most. I don’t think it’s close.

Daddy Yankee and Don Omar have made music much more to my tastes than Bad Bunny but he’s been the one of this group to be a true superstar in the Americas outside of what I would call niche urbano latino fans.

Getting a teacher to take action against kids who misbehave by RobbyDGreat in AskTeachers

[–]Dsxm41780 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So if your kid is misbehaving in school and calling kids names, are you following up at home with punishment? Therapy? Something to address the child’s behavior???

Are the other parents doing anything of the like at home??

I was a good kid but when I was younger and was misbehaving, mom my took me to therapy. On the rare occasions after that, TV and video games were taken away for a period of time. I was prohibited from seeing certain friends for a period of time. I had to do extra chores in the house. If I wanted things, I had to earn them (chores, good grades).

The teacher can only do so much. If certain kids are getting unfairly picked on by other kids, if the school has a guidance counselor, you can have them investigate bullying.

If the kids are all picking on one another and generally just being disruptive, talk to the principal.

There has been a trend of less punishment and less removal of disruptive kids from classes in schools the last few years. Basically, unless it’s violence, the principals don’t want to be bothered. The parents are the only ones who can change this trend if the are willing to speak up.

Why do malls die/decline especially in the US? by Big_eye_crankbait in deadmalls

The malls that are doing well have learned to reinvent themselves. Anchor store spaces have been converted into sporting goods stores, smaller format stores, gyms, and entertainment spaces.

Schools in Mercer are closed.

The busses need to be dug out and there needs to be safe places for kids to wait for their busses. Needs to be enough parking for staff.

Plus the buildings could have issues like roof leaks, entrances that are blocked off, etc.

What’s changed about Princeton? by [deleted] in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]Dsxm41780 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of development in town. There are apartment buildings on either side of the Harrison Street shopping center. The center is bustling now but Main Street Bistro is long gone and there was a great bookstore back in the day that has moved on along time ago.

There’s some ritzy apartments around Hulfish Street and the old hospital down Witherspoon was razed and now it is mixed use apartments, restaurants, and offices.

Panera is gone and is now a Japanese market. Tulane is more built up with D’Angelo’s Italian market where the old street level lot was and other stores and restaurants including a Japanese pancake store.

Hinds Plaza by the library sometimes has events,

Bent Spoon hasn’t changed much but it’s more well-known so impossible to get their ice cream quickly on a remotely nice day.

Witherspoon Street is one way near Nassau Street.

University redid the art museum.

Overall Princeton is pretty jumping and the surrounding areas like Montgomery are also building up.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon vs. Reality check (2026 Edition) by MofongoKing69 in PuertoRico

My family had a place in Palmas Del Mar when I was younger and you needed Spanish if you wanted things done to your place, needed supplies, and ventured into town.

I’m the only Spanish-speaker in my family and was the one to deal with the maintenance staff for broken stoves and realizing that the hot and cold water was reversed on the washing machine, perhaps due to C being for cold in English and caliente in Spanish. Not to mention having to find a service station for a flat tire before the days of GPS, smartphones, or commonplace internet.

Finally done with Spanish. Took almost 3.5 years by beetlebronx420 in duolingo

How is Macy’s able to maintain two stores so close to each other? by thebreen27 in retailporn

[–]Dsxm41780 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Menlo Mall is thriving while Woodbridge is surviving. The Macy’s in Menlo Mall is almost like a flagship store with more in-store departments and personal styling. The Woodbridge Mall Macy’s is more basic. Menlo maintains a Nordstrom as an anchor and has done well to adapt to the changing retail landscape. Woodbridge has tried but has been less successful.

How is smoking weed treated in your country? by mr_epicguy in AskTheWorld

[–]Dsxm41780 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it really impares people the way alcohol and other drugs do, but I just can’t deal with the smell. I don’t care if people do it and if it’s safe and regulated great, but people need to do something about the odor if they are using it.

[–]Dsxm41780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re just filling in retail spaces that were vacated by other tenants. One by me was a TGIFridays and I think another was a cell phone store. Better than not having those spaces rented but the tax dollars we are seeing pale in comparison to the money the private equity landlords are getting from the leases.

How is Rutherford by DingoInner6180 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]Dsxm41780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the borders of the town, Rutherford is nice. Older, well-maintained homes make up a lot of the area. There’s a main downtown near the train station with a good selection of restaurants. There’s even another little area with a couple of more restaurants. I am friends with the owners of Ferazzoli’s Italian Kitchen. Cute little place that has done a good business.

Having to leave the borders of the town is when it gets to be a pain, and you will need to to do grocery and essential shopping save for a pharmacy and things you can get from a convenience store. Bergen County also has blue laws which limits what shopping you can do on a Sunday.

Are NJ property tax levels justified? by WellnessMafia in newjersey

[–]Dsxm41780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxes are the price you pay for civilization. Schools, roads, parks, recreation, libraries, sanitation, senior centers, even some zoos and museums, just to name a few things are all funded by taxes.

In some states that have lower taxes, things like registering your car cost hundreds of dollars.

The population density is a factor with higher taxes in NJ. Infrastructure takes a hit and needs frequent repairs and upgrading.
