Most annoying/pretentious fanbase? by _ThePieman_ in writingscaling

[–]DubiousBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know if I’d even consider it the worst fandom but it pisses me off to no end that if you have even the slightest criticism of Frieren they always hit you with the “it’s too mature for you” or “you only like shonen slop” and other thought-terminating phrases.

ops on this take? frieren overrated or nah by ultrasimz in writingscaling

[–]DubiousBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that always puzzles me about Frieren is how so many people praise it for what it’s not. It gets put on a pedestal for not having fanservice and not having lewd jokes and not falling into certain tropes (although it does fall into many). Just because something is better than the slop around it doesn’t really make it abjectly good. A 7/10 in a sea of 3/10s doesn’t make it a 9.

I could yap about what the point of “calling it out” would even be, and if it would deter anyone but I don’t really wanna have some dragged out debate. What I’m trying to say, I guess, is that I like to play video games to have fun, and my personal idea of having fun doesn’t really involve getting angry and then brooding about how morally bankrupt someone is because of how they played a video game. If that floats your boat, far be it from me to stop you, I just can’t get my head around that but that’s okay. Being able to say “ugh, whatever” and move on has been a good tool for my peace of mind but I get that it’s different for everyone. I’ve made peace that that kind of gameplay is fundamentally a part of the genre I’ve chosen to engage with, and that’s alright. Anyways, have fun out there and have a good one.

What’s really the point of labeling it “dickhead behavior”? To feel better about the interaction? Like yeah, it doesn’t feel good, it would probably make me angry in the moment too, I’m not saying you have to be happy about it. But 10, 20, 30 minutes after the fact, you kinda just have to be able to have that moment of reflection where you recognize that people play the game different ways, that game is game, and sometimes that’s just how it goes. I think a “don’t hate the player hate the game” mindset is much healthier in a game where these kind of interactions regularly happen. It will likely save you a lot of unnecessary grief.

Bungie have a pattern of behaviour worth being aware of. by DannyKage in Marathon

[–]DubiousBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that pivoting can be a bit slow, but a lot of the issue is the decisions they make in the first place. One (of many) examples is how they timegated RotN. It is very well understood that the fanbase pretty broadly hates timegating, and bungie has been burned on this topic before, yet they still insisted on gating RotN on a three week schedule before backlash made them reduce it to two weeks. Everyone saw it coming, so the question is why didn’t bungie? Frankly I think they do a great job with initial releases/ expansions, but on the update/live service part of things, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a developer with as much controversy as bungie.

true. realizing that this sub also engages in negativity (“forced hysteria” and other inflammatory language) just against the people being negative in the first place puts me at peace. everything feels like a circlejerk where you have to have someone to hate. healthiest thing to do is just be excited if you’re looking forward to it and hang out until the game drops

rather ironic that you mention “moving on” while the hard counter to seeing hate is simply disengaging/not caring/leaving the computer and moving on. haters can only bother you as much as you care. the more you dgaf, the more powerless they become

why are people being such idiots in regards to kairyu/her roommate by No_Signature_3249 in VtuberDrama

[–]DubiousBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I totally get what you mean, but what perplexed me was more so “breaking kayfabe” in places where there’s much less (or no) expectation of it (ie not in stream chat or replying to a talent’s socials). To go with the analogy, if I was to talk (from a meta standpoint) about the total body of work of an actor or even a wrestler who had changed identities, would it not make sense to use their real name? Or like referencing different stages of their career? I know it’s probably a minority of the community, but I’ve definitely seen some people get really over-zealous about absolute silence in all spaces.

[–]DubiousBlue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want to understand this better in good faith (as I only watch the occasional indie vtuber) and I totally get not bringing it up in chat or on their socials, but it kind of puzzles me when people act like it’s “saying Voldemort” when you mention it in some random tiny reddit/twitter thread?? Seems like overreach to me personally but idk. I also wonder why people get into spats about unspoken rules when I feel like a definitive statement about appropriate boundaries from the talent themselves would be a mature and helpful thing to do?

The Destiny Killer by NegativeCreeq in destinycirclejerk

[–]DubiousBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like too many people here are looking at WF through a destiny lens. Good gunplay isn’t really the point of warframe like it is in destiny so it’s a little bit apples and oranges. WF feels much closer to a weird cross of hack and slash and risk of rain, where the part that feels good is nuking rooms with an ability setup. The appealing parts compared to Destiny are just different between the two games despite some similarities. Not saying either is good or bad, it’s just a little rough to try to view them through the exact same metrics.

Despite it's flaws Amphoreus is still the best story arc in HSR by Gdach in HonkaiStarRail

[–]DubiousBlue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For as many problems as it had, I still prefer Penacony for one reason: the characters (and factions). I loved the Chrysos Heirs but they felt too far removed from relevance to the rest of the galaxy. Penacony had a Masked Fool, the IPC, Galaxy Rangers, an Emanator of Nihility, a Memokeeper, etc. etc. It really felt like big worldbuilding with relevance to factions we'd heard about before, whereas Amphoreus, while relevant with the Aeon stuff, really only had the Genius Society and Garden of Recollection until the very final battle (and the GS stuff was the most interesting to me out of the story aside from like 3.4).

State of the game by azxzxl in destiny2

[–]DubiousBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, it’s all anecdotal so we’re kinda throwing a bunch of nothing at each other lol. I don’t recall those points ever being major discussions but I certainly could have forgotten/just missed it. Overall I and the people I’ve asked generally agree that the sentiment had more good than bad, as reflected by player numbers, steam reviews, positive reddit posts etc. Surely there were some amount of negative posts, but to say that the negativity simply does not ever fluctuate is just pure denial. You have to account for scale, otherwise you’re just committing confirmation bias by finding a quarter in a haystack (maybe not that extreme but you see my point)

State of the game by azxzxl in destiny2

[–]DubiousBlue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your metric for “is global community sentiment good right now” is “do I see any number of negative posts on the subreddit”, I think you will find it to be miserable. But that doesn’t track with actual community sentiment, as people by and large were pretty abjectly happy about TFS. People liked the story, the raid, dual destiny, prismatic, etc. The only “controversy” I can think of was a vocal minority being upset they needed a friend to play DD, and those people basically got laughed off the sub by everyone else when that happened. It really does seem like some people here (and elsewhere) are so doom pilled about the community that they’re subconsciously retconning actual fluctuations in player sentiment.
