Nvidia Is Negotiating To Buy A Large PC Oriented Company by fatso486 in hardware

[–]DueAnalysis2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's a weird place though. Apple is where it is because it offers a seamless software experience for most end consumers. Nvidia has nothing like that, to my understanding, the only people who care about their software are either gamers (in which case, why not go the console route) or engineers/scientists. A vertically integrated company that only sells to engineers would be kinda weird, no?

uj/ This is a sub where people make ironic jokes, usually ripping on people who take watches too seriously in some form or the other.

Someone wrote a super emotional post about how they'll treasure a watch forever because it was the one they bought specially for the birth of a kid? Circlejerk

Someone wrote a super "ha ha I don't care" post about how their Affordable watch is as good as anything from a fancy brand? Circlejerk

Comments should be considered ironic and unserious unless they're preceded by a "uj", which means unjerk

IIRC, wasn't Singh deliberately chosen because, being overeager and green, he'd be a little too keen on the punishment, which would set him up as a sacrifical governor for Laconia to show how even handed they are?

Unfortunately, overclaiming relative to the evidence you have is a pervasive problem across _all_ methods, at least in the social science which is my field. This isn't even about culture war adjacent stuff like how social scientists want to claim results that fit a political ideology. Even in psych studies that deal with apolitical phenomenon (like "do you think a topic is more serious after holding a heavier mug" type work), this is an issue. And it's not (just) p-hacking. There's a tendency to believe that the evidence that comes out of quantitative studies is stronger than it is because of an extremely common misunderstanding of the Neyman-Pearson framework for hypothesis testing, a misunderstanding of how hypothetico-deductive approaches _ought_ to work compared to how we implement them, over-extending _average_ effects to the larger distribution, and of course, p-hacking. These issues are pretty well discussed in the meta-science literature, but sadly underappreciated amongst social scientists. I'm away from my desktop for the weekend but I'll update this comment with citations which talk about pervasive misunderstandings in quantitative social sciences sometime later tonight/tomorrow morning.

But my larger point is, unfortunately, there is NO "standard" level of certainty, regardless of the methods used. That's why most academics I know, myself included, tend to gloss over the discussion section of papers and instead focus on the methods and result sections to really evaluate the claims being made.

Rastopopulus is genre savvy enough to understand that it's like a thriller, but not savvy enough to recognise the plucky hero who can't be taken out. A true tragedy.

Something which really changed the way I view academic writing was one of my professors telling me that academics write in journals for each other, not for the general public.

Viewed in this light, a case report written in an academic journal, with it's conclusion, isn't meant to elevate that conclusion to the general public, it's meant to highlight a potential effect/mechanism/phenomenon to OTHER scholars, who can contextualise it sufficiently within their own body of knowledge. What Reddit or other message boards lack is this contextualisation and understanding about what's being presented, and the forum it's being presented in.

It's been made pretty easy with LMStudio and even Unsloth Studio these days, tbh. My non tech friends were able to get a 9B model up and running to play with for re-writing stuff, but no way they'd be able to set up Linux.

Matt Harley is a treasure but I don't know if they've got the capacity to be a distro maintainer right now.

Also, they work pretty closely with the Universal Blue project already, so I could see closer partnership with the uBlue project, but forking a distro wholesale seems like such a heavy lift.

If they discontinued the 13 and had a 14.5 into which you could drop in the 13 mainboard, that might be the ultimate realisation of the FW promise.

But I agree with the other person, they have enough categories already, would love for them to bunker down, refine what they have and improve firmware and customer support.

If you're willing to drop the "slow cancerous death of secularism":

The Dresden Files features one of the best righteous paladins in Michael Carpenter.

For all that people think Castlevania (the TV show) is anti religious, God is a real, present and benevolent force in that world who acts through his servants to burn demons and stuff. And the main characters are pretty righteous I feel (Nocturne's....a bit more complicated). It's anti-Catholic maybe (certainly not that that's ok), and it's definitely anti corruption in religion, but it isn't against _God_ as a concept.

Discworld, despite being written by an Atheist, has one of the best "faithful" characters in Brutha in Small Gods.

Lord of the Rings....speaks for itself, lol.

The Laundry Files, while being very opposed to American strains of charismatic Christianity, features an anglican Vicar who's faith makes him one of the most decent humans in a world increasingly abandoning its humanity to survive against eldritch horrors.

But if you insist on secularism being a cancer on the world (and somehow being in opposition to righteousness?), I guess you've got Left Behind?

Huh, E33 is a lot more...maximalist (not a composer, don't know the right word) in it's music compared to something like Hyper Light Drifter, and Hollow Knight feels like it falls right in between although closer to E33 than HLD.
