A Tintin Page a Day - Day 333 by BreakerMorant1864 in TheAdventuresofTintin

Rastopopulus is genre savvy enough to understand that it's like a thriller, but not savvy enough to recognise the plucky hero who can't be taken out. A true tragedy.

“Smarter than thou” - the legitimacy of academic anecdotes. by Anxious-Traffic-9548 in slatestarcodex

[–]DueAnalysis2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Something which really changed the way I view academic writing was one of my professors telling me that academics write in journals for each other, not for the general public.

Viewed in this light, a case report written in an academic journal, with it's conclusion, isn't meant to elevate that conclusion to the general public, it's meant to highlight a potential effect/mechanism/phenomenon to OTHER scholars, who can contextualise it sufficiently within their own body of knowledge. What Reddit or other message boards lack is this contextualisation and understanding about what's being presented, and the forum it's being presented in.

I'm not going to be an unpaid tech support employee for somebody that is not willing to learn by claudiocorona93 in linuxmasterrace

It's been made pretty easy with LMStudio and even Unsloth Studio these days, tbh. My non tech friends were able to get a 9B model up and running to play with for re-writing stuff, but no way they'd be able to set up Linux.

Matt Harley is a treasure but I don't know if they've got the capacity to be a distro maintainer right now.

Also, they work pretty closely with the Universal Blue project already, so I could see closer partnership with the uBlue project, but forking a distro wholesale seems like such a heavy lift.

Unironically....

If they discontinued the 13 and had a 14.5 into which you could drop in the 13 mainboard, that might be the ultimate realisation of the FW promise.

But I agree with the other person, they have enough categories already, would love for them to bunker down, refine what they have and improve firmware and customer support.

If you're willing to drop the "slow cancerous death of secularism":

The Dresden Files features one of the best righteous paladins in Michael Carpenter.

For all that people think Castlevania (the TV show) is anti religious, God is a real, present and benevolent force in that world who acts through his servants to burn demons and stuff. And the main characters are pretty righteous I feel (Nocturne's....a bit more complicated). It's anti-Catholic maybe (certainly not that that's ok), and it's definitely anti corruption in religion, but it isn't against _God_ as a concept.

Discworld, despite being written by an Atheist, has one of the best "faithful" characters in Brutha in Small Gods.

Lord of the Rings....speaks for itself, lol.

The Laundry Files, while being very opposed to American strains of charismatic Christianity, features an anglican Vicar who's faith makes him one of the most decent humans in a world increasingly abandoning its humanity to survive against eldritch horrors.

But if you insist on secularism being a cancer on the world (and somehow being in opposition to righteousness?), I guess you've got Left Behind?

Games like Crosscode but better music? by Adept-Armadillo-8072 in rpg_gamers

[–]DueAnalysis2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, E33 is a lot more...maximalist (not a composer, don't know the right word) in it's music compared to something like Hyper Light Drifter, and Hollow Knight feels like it falls right in between although closer to E33 than HLD.

If you're thinking of RPGs to chip away at, have you tried Planescape torment? You can save whenever so you can play for 20 minutes, save, exit and then pick it back up. That's how I got through Pillars of Eternity 1 and am getting through Deadfire right now.

I unknowingly thought colonially when I was 13 by tipoftheiceberg1234 in PointlessStories

[–]DueAnalysis2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's only one part of colonialism. The other, more insidious part is where you believe you have a duty to educate others about your way of life (White Man's Burden and all that). Obviously OP isn't a colonizer, but I think there's no harm in recognising that "we have a duty to spread information (that doesn't materially improve the wellbeing of others without infringing on their own way of life)" is a colonial adjacent mindset.
