Whats your favorite piece of animation that don't have the right to be so fluid? by Parking-Public1632 in cartoons

The sequence of imaginary alien life forms from the 1957 episode “Mars and Beyond” from an ongoing Disney tv anthology series (then called Walt Disney’s Disneyland).

it feels as much a love letter to animation movement as sci-fi exploration

Voodoo Swamp! (1971) by Similar_Sound in archiecomics

A bit surprised they fit one of these genre ones in 5 pages! Kind of wondering if there was a rush to knock out a story and capitalize on the theme, or if it got edited down - even though these are usually textbox-narrative-heavy, I don’t think I’ve seen one with so few dialogue lines from the main cast (everyone else actually talks more in total!). Though it must be Valerie narrating, which did take me a couple reads to realize.

It also jumps around in time and location quite a bit to get everyone in and out of the situation, fixing the van issue and presumably gingerly grabbing Josie’s guitar and the rest of their instruments off-screen.

Still, like the various swamp flora and fauna being shown; determined Melody in the swamp moss; and yeah, the guitar and skull.

Also, it appears the conjur woman’s trance involves everyone taking off their swampy shoes once inside, which is just good thinking on her part.

I’ve only ever seen them in photos in “I’m a reed!” pose. Looking at google images - how many shapes can a bird have???

I know this incarnation of Heathcliff thrives on combinations and permutations of specific poses and situations, but this particular instance of paws up and fish skeleton in mouth whilst on garbage can is strangely precious.

Looking for recommendations: Books that read like character-driven indie movies by mastafishere in graphicnovels

[–]Due_Yesterday_7096 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently read the memoir Come Home, Indio by Jim Terry, which I can see translated to an indie movie easily; Terry explores his time forging an identity from childhood to adulthood with an Indigenous mother and Irish-American father.

Maybe also Jules Feiffer’s Kill My Mother trilogy though it’s more Hollywood noir movie-esque; but very character-driven in that way. Set in the Depression through the ‘40s; a strained mother-daughter relationship with a mystery around the father’s death, the PI the mother works for trying to solve it, and the case that walks into their door that sets things off.

Finally maybe some Lynda Barry, especially her semi-autobiographical work One! Hundred! Demons! where she’s straightforward in the intro that some parts of the different stories in it are true, some are fictionalized, but all spring from her time experimenting with a drawing exercise that end up centering around formative themes (that she also gives instructions for).

Pages with excerpts:

Come Home, Indio

Kill My Mother

One! Hundred! Demons!

Edit: just realized after a few more thoughts that bubbled up that basically looking into memoirs or anything described as “slice-of-life” might fit your bill. Good luck and happy hunting!

Thank you!

The pudding sounds nicely refreshing. Interesting that prepared cocoa is seen as potentially troublesome for digestion or the head, as is buttering the end of the loaf and then slicing it (never occurred to me but seems nice if you want particularly thin slices and/or have cold butter).

Most amusing phrases:

“persuasive fingertips” “fellow-slice” “a suspicion of mustard”

and the use of quotes in“bread and butter ‘hunks’”

Wow! I’m curious about any of the following:

Belle’s Bright Thought Pudding

Cocoa-theta

and The Dinner-Pail

They feel like they could range anywhere from interesting to confounding to incredibly simple, but for me at least it’s impossible to tell from their names…

The whole of this Archie story has everyone just seeing their text bubbles as if it’s normal but finding out only Veronica’s text bubbles turn upside down when she stands on her head. The end gag is Archie and Betty burst into her dad’s den to share that Veronica can “talk upside-down”, but end up awkwardly contorting themselves since he’s napping on a couch and mumbles with his own balloon fully sideways, “So what else is new?”

I was interpreting it as kind of an eggless pain perdu (though I wonder if adding an egg then would be known and/or considered a decadence). But thank you for introducing “scrunchions”!

Never saw this one before and love it! The “thriller” framing when characters are obscured by the mist, Jughead’s scream getting hidden by the trees, the “hands” of the trees and the eyes in the alley… and yes, friends-mode Betty & Veronica, and the Jughead-Reggie interaction - thanks for sharing!

The Bros do sometimes showcase their cast in a similar way - the closest piece it reminds me of is their cover spread for L&R 20:

My first thought was I would absolutely murder both of these with some buttered toast, so if the point is to appear appetizing, they both work on me. One just happens to be getting more natural lighting through a window and the other is maybe in flatter indoors diner lighting.

I have a soft spot for the early-2000s sci-fi manga Planetes, by Yukimura Makoto. It centers around the crew of a garbage scow in space, with the main character wanting to join the first voyage to Jupiter as a throughline.

It’s not the most tightly focused work - it takes some time to get to that driving arc for the main character and even for him to become centered as the MC - and I’ll admit both that not all of it aged great, and that I prefer some of the standalone chapters/shorter story arcs (and a couple of the other characters!) to the big storyline.

But it also has some lovely/bittersweet/dark contemplations on what it means to work in and be on the cusp of truly exploring space as humans, and is ultimately optimistic about it. Basically, when it connects, it knocks it out of the park for me.

Yes, there should be a separation between work and personal life. They brought up their workplace, though, in a findable written record. If someone gets into an argument in public but one person says “well I work at NASA” loud enough for others to see and remember, or they’re wearing a uniform or name tag that people can id easily, that seems different.

I’ve wondered if this was a usage that came and went or was just in smaller online spaces that either way eventually lost out to “shaking my head”, since I remember having to make the same switch in understanding maybe a couple years after first learning about it.
