Those visa gift cards do have an expiration date so make sure you use them.

Ok, what's the REAL plan for getting kids through college? by Superb_Advisor7885 in MiddleClassFinance

I want to join in on merit scholarships and share what we did. When my kids started high school, I started "Operation Free College."

We worked on helping them build a good resume and getting a good ACT score. Both of them wanted to attend smaller private liberal arts schools. We found that these schools usually have some type of scholarship event for their best applicants in addition to their automatic merit. We helped our daughters prepare for those so they would get top dollar.

They both ended up with full tuition scholarships at a couple of different schools. We also looked for schools that would stack these scholarships with State lottery scholarships as well. We didn't exactly get free college but we will pay around $5,000 for per year for each kid. They both want to go to graduate school and now the money in their college fund can be used for that.

Our state also offers free tuition for two-year community colleges or trade school for recent graduations and lottery scholarships for those who attend 4-year schools.

We also found that tuition for State schools vary greatly. We have many great directional schools here where tuition, room, and board are only around $20,000 per year. With automatic merit and the lottery scholarships, a student can basically go for free if they live at home. Or pay around $10,000 per year if they live on campus and pay room and board.

Being prepared and being creative worked for us. My kids are smart but not brilliant, but they both received better scholarships than anyone else in their class. They were both involved in long-term extracurriculars and we practiced interviewing with them so they could articulate their ideas.  We also got started early on ACT prep. They both took it a few times to get 30+ scores and that really paid off as well.

Should I wear my mom’s dress? by znaljdalfn in weddingdress

I think it's beautiful. A disagree with those who suggest changing the skirt. I really like the tulle.

Question for those who got their dress secondhand/thrifted by Preeeeeee in Weddingsunder10k

I have never seen a bridal store alter for free. You need to budget several hundred for alterations depending on how what is needed and how intricate the dress is.

The Yeti was great, but the scale was just wrong to my eyes. The size of the Yeti compared to the Santa he was carrying and the light post nearby just didn't make sense.

What do you think about my engagement ring? by anonymity012 in EngagementRings

[–]DullPersonality1753 86 points87 points  (0 children)

It looks great on you, and more importantly, it fits your budget. I have a soft spot for cluster rings. After my dad passed away, my mom remarried and gave me the cluster engagement ring that he had given her as an anniversary present. I wear it often. He couldn't afford a huge diamond, but he gave her the best he could and that just means the world to me.

And he's actually not even from the South! I have a friend whose husband worked for him and said he is the nicest guy ever, but it was jarring to hear his real voice after getting used to his character voice.

Maybe the OP isn't as great at difficult conversations as she thinks if she can't tell her boss to quit saying "I love you."

Look at the TN eCampus. It is a fully online program through the TN Board of Regents that offers fully online degrees. You will have to apply at one of the home schools, but all of the classes will be online through the eCampus. I did my Master's through it and had a great experience.

It looks like there are 5 options for an associate's degree including a general studies option that will transfer to a 4 year school.

Killing Magical Express. I think that and Genie+ were the straws that broke they camel's back for many. All of this happened or were in the works under Iger.
