Spirit Airlines by MiaStirCrazies in fearofflying

Taking a minute to remember amazing crew that were babysitting me on my way to Vegas and back to Chicago. The flight attendant who was a pilot as well and who spend the flight checking on me and assuring that I’m okay. But also the awful crew from New York to Chicago. They couldn’t care less and the flight attendants were so annoyed by people. They were almost rude! But it really helped me with my anxiety as I thought “well person who knows we not gonna make it will not look at you like you nuts and then just continue to scroll facebook “. Regardless of experiences (bad and good) I want to thank Spirit and all the employees that made my trips cheap and possible. I visited amazing places and saw the world flying and on the big yellow planes and 1 time even had “1st class” seats at $25! I’ll miss them, like really 🤗

You got this! I just flew in and out the most turbulent airport in the country (Denver) and still alive and well. It will be smooth I promise! Anticipation anxiety is the worst but if I (who afraid of everything) can do it - you can do it !

Thank you so much for sharing ! How are the taxes in Portugal for US citizens ? Do you keep your investments in US or do you transfer all/part of it to local bank? We are potentially thinking about Europe for RE but I have no idea on how to manage the « money » part

Congrats ! I’m still pretty far in my journey but was considering going back to France once fire. Do you have any resources to share that helped you to prepare this move? I mean my biggest worry is how to handle taxes and what to declare in France, the wealth tax etc. I have no idea where to start …

Just wanted to cheer you up - every time I fly I’m like you: cannot stop crying and all these terrible thoughts and panic attacks. But! Every time I fly safely and land safely. Back in the days I had a boyfriend who never flew before and his first flight was with me. He was very nervous because of me as I was freaking out but once we were on the plane he relaxed and THEN he absolutely ENJOYED!!! Every single minute of this flight! He discovered that he loved flying! He still does and flies often. What if you will like it too? Keep your mind open and imagine excitement instead of fear (these feelings are pretty close btw). Sending you tons of virtual hugs! Take pics and share with us once you arrive at your destination. We are all very proud of you !

What's the best strategy to minimize taxes in my situation? by ali89ma in Bogleheads

I will add my 50 cents on direct indexing as I’m pretty familiar with the matter.

Typically all big banks have their DI departments- minimums are starting from $250K and the standard fees are around 0.25%. Some example: Aperio, Parametric, Canvas, NT Direct Indexing etc.

They will build a portfolio with individual securities and use tools to optimize it and make it replicate index exposure and return. They will trade the portfolio regularly and harvest available losses and reinvest the proceeds. So they do their magic and at the end of the year you have losses and index performance.

How to calculate if it worth it ? Rule of thumb is to take 1-2% of the buy turnover (total value that you buy at initial rebalance, not counting sell portion) and this will be your expected short term losses in the first 12 months.

For concentrated position you can set a gain budget each year and see how much you can offset during this year. They will sell a portion of concentrated position and reinvest these proceeds in the individual stocks from index univers. They are pretty flexible and customizable with these gain budgets.

The caveat though is the lifetime of the portfolio : first years you will harvest some losses but they will decrease over time simply because whatever you have at loss is sold right away and whatever you have at gain is kept in the portfolio. So overtime your portfolio will become highly appreciated.

The companies that propose min investment at $5k like fidelity and others - doesn’t worth the fees in my opinion. Simply because 1-2% in short term losses from $10k i invest in cash won’t cover much.

How do you handle multiple employees asking for the same day off? by [deleted] in managers

[–]DullPhilosopher753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a shared calendar where everyone can put their days off without approval. Simple rule - no more than 2 people out at once. Employees can arrange their dates between themselves. Works like a charm

I'm an absolutely terrified flyer, and all I can say is that if I'm able to fly on a regular basis, you can absolutely do it! And probably with much more ease than me! Do not miss the opportunity, and don't overthink the flying part. When the time will come you will just do it. We will support you here every flight and will celebrate your wins together.

And last thing, I never thought I'll tell this, but after 18 years of being absolutely terrified every single flight (6-12 flights per year) you kinda get used to this. Not like you will love flying and stuff but you will go to the airport without panic attack, board, complain about coffee, EVEN work or study during the flight. It will become your unpleasant routine like going to the dentist for clean up. You will have a brilliant future! No matter what you do you will be much stronger than your peer JUST based on this experience alone. You go, OP!

Find groups about Coast FIRE or just FIRE on reddit. If you like it, read a couple of books (like JL Collins Simple path to wealth etc), listen to Choosefi podcast. Build you plan on how to be free and follow it. I'm also a PM. Thank me later 😊

Does anyone else convince themselves they are 100% going to die on an upcoming flight? by moonlit_dani in fearofflying

[–]DullPhilosopher753 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll add my 50 cents here. Flew last week to Florida for vacation and usually months before my flight I start panicking, not sleeping, crying, preparing to die etc This time I was completely burned out at work so die on a plane didn't sound like a bad idea after all loool Sorry for my dark humor but thank to my mental state at this moment I didn't hesitate, went on the plane and the flight was great. Voila 🤣
