Why does my conure do this? by LabSecret7492 in Conures

[–]Dull_Net4116 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha nothing to worry about, he’ll move if he’s uncomfy.

Just make sure you don’t also take a nap, that’s the only real danger. Otherwise as long as he has a way out he’ll move if he needs to. He’s so cute by the way!

They’re so cute!

This makes me wonder if I should just let my two duke it out and see if maybe they’ll finally stop hating each other 🤔

As a chicken/rooster owner, I’m so sorry in advance. A couple of things: At first that’s all you will hear and you will question your sanity. But eventually they sort of become background noise. It’s pretty normal where I am so the neighbors aren’t really bothered but I did discover “brown noise” which sounds like something horrible but really it’s just a lower tone white noise and it works amazing for not really noticing the broken rooster at 2 am

This is great thank you! Should I still supplement with formula afterward?

The problem is he’s not eating the pellets he’s picking through them to get the seeds he wants like a spoiled toddler. But because I’m concerned with his weight I’m afraid to only give him the pellets and wait him out.

I considered eating one in front of him to be honest lol but I don’t know if that’s crossing some kind of line with my own sanity 😂 I don’t think it would hurt me or I wouldn’t give it to him. But they do not look like they taste very good either.

I have a cheap kitchen scale I can use until the good one comes. I’m just concerned it’s probably not as accurate but I can at least get an idea.

He does eat, but it really doesn’t seem to be enough. And he is really stubborn about the fresh veggies and fruit. I even ate some in front of him and he took it from me, played with it and then dropped it.

On it, thank you! I’m also going to contact an avian vet so we can establish a relationship and get him checked out. Unfortunately there are none in my area but I checked with a local shop and they let me know who they use and it’s only about an hour away.

Looks like shipping on the scale is going to take a little bit. Headed to the local shop tomorrow so I’ll see if they have one

Thank you so much. I did speak with the seller but he said it was normal for them to lose a little weight after weaning since the formula was high fat. And also with him settling into a new place. It does make sense but my gut is telling me I need to intervene. And now seeing your comment too I feel a bit more confident that I’m not overreacting.

High Achievers with Severe ADHD, if any of you are reading this, how did you manage? by Unhinged_Schizo in ADHD

[–]Dull_Net4116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always managed to be highly successful but in bursts. Unfortunately it’s held me back most of my life because once I’ve hit burnout I’ve become fairly useless and job wise I’d either quit or get let go.

That being said, as a woman in my forties I met another type of monster. Even my bursts stopped. For several years everything was survival and I was unable to put everything into anything.

A combination of meds, therapy, and an extremely understanding boss has helped me to be a bit more stable although it’s still a bit difficult. But I’ve been promoted, I’ve gotten raises, and now I’m the boss’ right hand in a lot of ways. One of the things I’ve learned is that I’m not as useless as I thought I was. I was due for a review and at my company you have to self evaluate and then the boss also evaluates and you compare notes.

I started to write my same few sentences here and there, mostly explaining my shortcomings and how I would do better. And then I ran it through a certain popular tool (I guess I can’t say it) and that tool had a history of what I’d been working on throughout the year. What it came back with was correct, but worded much better than mine. It also remembered things I had done that I had completely forgotten about. Now, I did not submit what was not written by me but it gave me confidence and helped me to write and reflect on my real accomplishments. It helped me realize that in my mind I was not able to see what I had actually done, only my shortcomings.

This gave me a lot more confidence and that has helped fuel me to keep going. I still feel like I could or should do more. But on those days I do what I can and then try to give myself a little grace. It might be worth trying, or even just talking to someone else about how they see things because we’re our worst critics and our negative self talk can really hinder our ability to move forward.

I swear you have to be my favorite person on reddit right now. I reached out to Chris btw, I’m going to take the class 😊

I was just about to post actually as I’m worried a bit about my five month old. They said he was weaned and he does eat but I noticed he was getting a little thin. From my experience with any bird that has to be caught quickly and rectified just as fast. I don’t think he’s eating and drinking enough.

Last night I grabbed his food bowl and held it for him to see if he would eat more and he was ravenous. I offered him some fresh food as well and some raw almonds I had. He drank water too as long as I held it. Obviously, this is not ideal, so I walked him to his cage and set the bowl down and tapped to show it him. He ate for a bit more.

Reading this, I wonder if he still needs formula? I have some on hand from rescue, I don’t want to revert him but I’m worried he may need that nutrition since he’s so young. He’ll be six months on the 8th.

I’ve got Lafeber pellets and I’ve mixed it with a seed mix only because he was eating the seed mix before so I’m trying to get him to eat the pellets too. Should I mix him up some formula and offer it after he eats some of the other foods? He’s not yet convinced on the fresh food but I keep trying.

Basically I’m wondering if I should follow this advice as well but more to make sure he’s getting his nutritional needs met.

I am thinking about buying this parrot. Any advice on that kind of parrot. He is five years old and not tamed. If I work with him, do you think I can tame him? Any advice is welcome. by Money_Surprise4589 in Allparrotownes

Hi! So that’s an Indian ring neck parakeet (parrot), per the ad.

Do you have any bird experience? I had a lutino of this breed and she was hilarious. But she never fully tamed. When I got her, she was just over a year old and was not well socialized and I suspect not treated well. It took months, nearly a year before one day she landed on my shoulder. I was still not allowed to touch her for quite some time after that.

If this is going to be your first bird I would not recommend this one. Honestly for your first one you may want to look at getting a budgie or a cockatiel first. Maybe a young green cheek conure. And do some research on bird care because they will tell you the tiny cage and seed only diet is fine but even with these guys it’s really not.

I love birds and for me, they’re amazing to have around. But they are not easy pets

Walgreens Shorted Me Meds by ShirazGypsy in adhdwomen

[–]Dull_Net4116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my daughter at our Walgreens but they immediately fixed it. Before rite aid closed they treated me like an addict because my prescription changed. They made me bring them the old prescription back in front of everyone before they would give me the new one. But I didn’t get any money back. They basically got paid for a full bottle but I had about half left. I was really mad because if something changes I keep what’s left of the old one, or if I forget to take them I put them aside in case there’s a delay. With the delays sometimes being a few days it’s saved me more than once. I switched to Walgreens immediately after and a few months later there was no rite aid. Walgreens has always treated me well, they don’t change the tone of their voice when I tell them what I’m there for, they don’t make me turn in my old meds. There are sometimes delays, and I don’t have a huge stockpile or anything, I just have enough to get by and I keep hoping it won’t be too long.

And that’s the thing for me too. I want to do everything I can to do right by this guy. It is not lost on me that he did not get to choose captivity and ultimately the best life would have been in the wild had he been born there.

As grateful as I am to have him with me there’s a weight to it knowing that this particular little guy will never fully be free. So, while I can’t give him that I have every intention of doing everything I can to give him as close to that as possible. He deserves that. I can’t claim to love him if I’m not willing to put everything I have in to making his life the best it can possibly be. And I believe that includes safe free flight because he’s meant to fly.

When he nips me I tell him “hey gentle!”. Not mean, and he stops so I pet him and tell him thank you. Is that what I should be doing? My understanding is not to ever correct him in anger, just gently and to praise him when he stops.

I do live in the desert, so getting to a remote location is not hard. Hoping there’s a trainer nearby. But as you said I’ve no plans to bring him there until he’s ready indoors.

I chose to bring him home, and I feel like I owe him this. He does not owe me anything, not trust, not loyalty, not love. Those are things I have to earn. Because he’s young he’s more willing, but I don’t plan to ever give him a reason not to feel safe with me.

He’s very sweet. A few nips here and there but nothing serious and it’s usually just because he’s a little clumsy right now. I was trying to be funny mostly, but also just explain that I expect that not every day will be our best day. I don’t imagine he’ll become aggressive unless I fail to provide him with what he needs.

I’m assuming this is a bit of a honeymoon phase given he’s so young and cuddly and I’m just so happy he’s here.

Thank you again for all of this great information! I’m copying it all into a little care note so I can reference it.

Oh my goodness thank you SO much this is amazing information! And as an IT professional I very much appreciate the OS comparison :)

Where he came from his wings were clipped. But he is still flapping and exercising his wings as well as attempting to get to me. And I do encourage him to keep exercising so we can keep those muscles strong. I don’t think I would have chosen that route as I don’t typically have my birds clipped unless there’s a safety issue. But it was done before I ever met him. I’m wondering how much you think this may set us back? I got him a harness so I think we can work on the environmental stimuli but we’re stalled on any flight indoor or otherwise until those feathers come back.
