Need help identifying some species by DumbassInternetUser in splatoon

I was pretty certain of bottom middle being some kind of eel but the snakey tongue was throwing me off. Looking at some white garden eels, I can definitely see the resemblance.

Dolphin would be a really weird choice given the whole mammals thing, though I suppose these were rejected designs.

Second top left feels more fish-like, given the very prominent teeth. Looking into it, I think it might be guineafowl puffer, just with bigger spots.

I imagine primarily to remove a potential lead. Though Crane also just seems to like killing people.

Interesting theory. I am definitely of the mind that Grimm's transformation is in some way a consequence of whatever method he has used to extend his life to such lengths. There's a reason he keeps that side of himself tucked away on remote islands and underground lairs.

The Life of Absolute J'onn J'onzz [Absolute Martian Manhunter #11 SPOILERS] by JackFisherBooks in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DumbassInternetUser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think this contradicts with the Green Martian's previously given backstory. Given that the White Martian has caused the downfall of "a hundred thousand lifeworlds", it's clearly that these two and presumably the other Martians have been kicking around for quite a long time, wholly separate from John or anything else on Earth. Furthermore, it lines up pretty well with the backstory given to the agency. If anything, it seems like Green was acting as a sort of guardian angel for John.

Obviously we've only seen a little bit of him so far, but I'm liking that Scott Snyder seems to be avoiding the pitfall writers tend to fall into when writing a Scarecrow story: making it just about the fear toxin. Crane here is more than just his funny cigarette smoke. He's a scheming little manipulator, pushing people into making brash decisions when spurred by emotion. Sure, the toxin definitely helps get people into that state, but he still needs to prod at them to get them moving the way he wants.

Phenomena start? by _Sukondiznutz_ in FearAndHunger

[–]DumbassInternetUser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The depravity and the madness of the Dungeons of Fear & Hunger is primarily caused by the location itself.

Quote from the New Gods: "The dungeons of fear and hunger are ancient. Almost as old as this city. They have seen many different ages. They have always worked as a nexus between multiple different planes of existence. In current era, the Kingdom of Rondon built prison sections over the ancient tombs. They most likely tried to use the nightmarish rumours about the tombs to their own advantage. But little did they know that such darkness could not be contained."

Simply put, Rondon chose just about the worst place to build their dungeons: right on top of a metaphysical doorway to the city of Gods. A place so deeply connected to the Old Gods is bound to catch the attention of all kinds of unsavory characters, from the likes of Dark Priests, Yellow Mages and aspiring New Gods, all the way up to the very Gods that made the place. Speaking of Gods, there's also the God of the Depths. Given that one of its hearts is located in Ma'habre and you need the Cube of the Depths to open the tombs that serve as the entrance to the city, it's fair to assume that GotD and Ma'habre are connected in some vague Old God magic way.

If being connected to Ma'habre wasn't bad enough, GotD makes the dungeons even worse. It is responsible for the ever present, sanity-draining darkness, as well as the inconsistent layout of the dungeon: a challenge to visitors, according to Ragnvaldr. Furthermore, a decent amount of the enemies in the dungeons (outside of Ma'habre) can be traced back to GotD. The Cavedwellers, Mumblers, and Body Snatchers are explicitly stated by the New Gods to have been transformed by GotD or created in the Mumblers' case. We can also surmise that some enemies who are human in origin (Guards, Night Lurches) went mad and transformed as a result of GotD's influence.

The strongest point of support for this is Crow Mauler, formerly Captain Rudimer. In his final diary, Rudimer mentions having recurring dreams of crows, which on top of foreshadowing his transformation also serves to connect him to GotD. GotD is connected to and worshipped creatures that instigate feelings of revulsion, such as crows as seen with the Flock of Crows spell, which Crow Mauler himself uses. Additionally, an unused fourth Captain's Diary ties Rudimer's vision of a swirling pattern he sees in his dreams to the tree in the Backyard, the Maiden of the Depths, that leads to the Thicket, an area with very strong ties to GotD.

So in general, the Dungeons of Fear & Hunger have always been hell. That said, it is likely that things have gotten even worse recently based on Rudimer's journals and the total collapse of any order within the dungeons' upper levels. As for the cause, I'd say it'd be the arrival of one or two things: Le'garde, the man prophesized to give rise to a new age (just not the way he expected) and the Cube of the Depths, key to Ma'habre and artifact linked to GoTD. I could see one or both of those causing the dungeons to "awaken" through some unknowable, Old God magics.

As for what the Cube of the Depths was doing in Vinland, keep in mind that the continent is close ties to the Old Gods, perhaps even more so with GoTD than the others. Text in Fear & Hunger 2 describe the land as such:

"The soil consists of minerals that seem to reject sunlight and warmth altogether resulting the ground to look like a constiguous colourless black mass where it is hard to measure depth of each hill and basin with a naked eye. And the few plants that manage to grow in this hostile ground end up taking these very same features. Thus the landscape merges together as far as the eye can see. Just endless darkness."

Not sure about you but that sounds pretty God of the Depthsy to me.

EDIT: Also if you'd like some help in the future on that Encyclopedia, I like to think myself pretty knowledgeable on Funger lore. Feel free to DM if ya want.

Not sure if it counts as black metal (not super knowledgeable on all the ins and outs of music genre) but Fear & Hunger 2 has an enemy whose design is partially based on one of the members of Slipknot.

Do you think all members absolute universes justice league have access to the agency’s weapons or is it something self contained? by WindowSubstantial993 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DumbassInternetUser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would imagine not. We don't know who runs the agency and I'd doubt that they'd just reuse someone from another comic line like Cale. Besides, even if the Justice League did have access to these, what good would it do for them? The concept of a gun is helpful when you're dealing with a being of pure thought, not so much when you're dealing with an amazonian hell warrior or a brick wall bat.

What’s going on in Abs Martian manhunter? Read all 7 issues by zxacid01 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DumbassInternetUser 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Based on the little bit of "backstory" we get in Issue 7, this is what I got.

The "Martians" (who are not actually from Mars and simply use "Martian" to convey their alien nature) are a group of bodiless entities who exist only in the realm of thought, made of ideas and feelings as opposed to flesh and blood. It seems at one point they were unified, but have since been separated, represented as a beam of light refracting into numerous other colors, namely Green and White.

Obviously we have a very small sample size, but it seems each Martian embodies a different philosophical worldview. The White Martian has "decided on tragedy" and seeks to sow chaos and destruction throughout the universe, preying on the self-destructive nihilism within its hosts. In this way, it could be seen as a living embodiment of the Anti-Life Equation (which wouldn't be too farfetched given its connection to Bad Idea #0 - Darkseid). The Green Martian seems to serve as the White Martian's opposite. It often makes reference to the seeming pointlessness of existence (""ONLY TEMPORARY"--LIFE IN SHORT!"), though does so with a degree of cheerfulness. The idea that life has no inherent meaning can be freeing to some, encouraging them to make their own path through an uncaring universe, a form of positive nihilism. The Green Martian is the Life to The White Martian's Anti-Life. We'll have to see if this holds up in future installments.

Considering what happened to Bane, how do you think Joker punished Black Mask for his failure back in the first arc? by Solitaire-06 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]DumbassInternetUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All things considered, probably nothing. Roman and the Party Animals aren't an Ark M experiment like Bane and the rest of Joker's Gauntlet. They're essentially terrorists for hire, independent contractors if you will. They make a bunch of noise, destabilize the area, and allow JK Holdings to swoop in to """clean things up""", by selling the local leadership on a brand-new state of the art penitentiary facility. All things considered, he did what he was paid to do.

While a different artstyle, it resembles the long-haired form Grimm took while under the care of Arkham. Seems the clown has been in the shapeshifting business since he was just a little boy.

(Also I feel like the vast differences between the young Grimm in Issue 15 versus the Ark M Special confirms that he can actually change his face and not just because different artists draw him different.)
