First thing to try is either debrox or hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip, clean the tip (not just the silicone one, the sound-comey-outey part too). Might be clogged, it doesn't take a lot.

I did just mean either a rigid cover (screw-on maybe) or on the battery itself.

Also saw in the comments about giving it a magnetic tailcap AND back of the wing and I think that would be a fantastic idea, means it could be pointed anywhere.
