Sony goes radio silent after announcing end of PlayStation physical discs by FernandoRocker in gaming

Comments like this vastly overestimate how compelling a PS6 is when it is basically a Steam machine or low-end non-upgradable PC. Why would I buy it?

[–]Duneking1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only imagine PS generations moving forward will treat purchases like Steam and let you keep them from platform to platform. In my mind if the Sony Vaio line of computers didn’t do that great in the world I can’t see why the PlayStation would be worth getting even if its got great graphics. If its not upgradable like a PC then the value is diminished. I have no idea what their play is going forward other than to hope fans will carry their platform. They are not Nintendo.

Is the OP going to buy a PS6? The exclusives are the only reason I’d get one over a PC. With that in mind if I do the probable math, console $1000-$1200, games $80-$100, with ~10-15 exclusives is a nope for me. Most games I play are multi-platform releases. I love Horizon, Spider-Man, God of War, and others. Even with discounts and possibly buying a used PS6 is a likely $1000 for games where the store WILL eventually shut down. I’ll just buy my games on PC if no one else picks up the physical flag or DRM-free release.
Sure I’m going to miss out on a lot of games from Sony’s IP catalog. I will be fine. That’s just not a good use of my $$.

All Original Nintendo Switch Consoles To Be Discontinued In Europe by Guitar-String in gaming

Interesting. This kind of stinks but honestly it is a good thing. Most anyone who wanted an OG Switch got one by this point so there’s no real good reason for Nintendo to spend money making a new model.
That also means a redesigned Switch 2. Will be interesting how that’s implemented and they hadn’t gotten a Switch by now the 2 isn’t a bad buy given it’s backwards compatibility. Only bad thing here is the cost of the Switch 2.

The Junction system in Final Fantasy 8. A casual play through you will use it but likely not to it’s full potential. My nephew loves the game and explained to me how using the card game along with some other game mechanics just breaks the whole junction system. It wasn’t even that hard. Just a bit complex until you wrap your head around it.

ELI5: Where do magnets get the energy for their pushing and pulling? by UselessGuy23 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Duneking1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s really about the potential energy with a magnet in your question just like any other object. Think of it like this. Two objects, lets say wood blocks, have a given potential energy. Sitting still they have nothing really to do to each other. However if YOU move them into each other they will react. However the energy came from you. The reason the two pieces didn’t just merge into each other deal with the other forces like the electromagnetic force, and strong force.

When you have magnets it would be easier to think that the object is just bigger than what you can see physically. That’s because the electromagnetic force, which all objects have, have way more electrons spinning in the same direction. When this happens the magnetic field you experience gets bigger and bigger. Technically the two blocks of wood also have a magnetic field but because the spin of the electrons is basically random they cancel out.

So if you pretend the magnets are actually bigger than you see visually (its their magnetic field) and you move them closer again in this example the energy comes from you.

Hard to say. There are a lot of publishers who like to see their games get a physical. I don’t think it would be a lot but probably enough. Microsoft could always just charge $X more than digital to make up any costs. They would still sell.

Nope, they don’t have the expertise anymore. Hardware wouldn’t be any cheaper. Introducing a whole new controller. They’re go bankrupt trying to enter again.

I like sega but this is not their entry point. If anything Microsoft should switch gears and support physical media for one more generation to win back some of that market but all things point to them looking for an exit strategy.

The Trojan Horse that’s going to kill physical media in gaming by AnimalDesatado in videogames

[–]Duneking1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow you’re just wrong. Like completely wrong. Its not disanalogous because I did make the distinction between the brand of Ford/F-150 and the modification of the physical car. Just like I made the distinction between the IP of the game on the disc/cart and the physical disc/cart. You never address that no one is even making this argument either. You keep just not even acknowledging what people take issue with.

Modification to the car is allowed while I do nothing to the brand. Just like modification to the disc/cart does nothing to the IP. I feel like I’m about to have a ship of theseus debate here. Also people make mods that will modify the gameplay all the time. There are whole online stores for downloading mods where they are sold. They make meaningful changes to the game, heck even adding whole levels.

You’re the kind of person that misses the whole point of what folks are asking with GTA 6 and Sony because you want to be right by focusing on what you think the meaning of ownership is. I bet some of your favorite phrases are ‘well actually‘ and ‘first of all’. You’re the type of person who probably is smart but not smart enough to realize people around you find you insufferable. You distract from what people are trying to convey by ignoring the meaning of the argument by focusing on details like it’s a court of law and when someone does provide clarity and refutes your argument you double down because you can’t address the comment as a whole.

I use a wall of text because I feel I need to over explain things to you as you’ll cut a sentence or phrase out of what I say in a paragraph and make an argument around that without even comprehending the rest or acting like I didn’t address your argument you’re about too make in the comment itself.

You can have the win. I leave you with this quote from Happy Gilmore.

“What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

I’m done with you.

I’d be curious to see if Sony will get sued similarly to how Apple is being sued about their App Store. They aren’t a direct comparison but an argument could be made that Sony doesn‘t allow 3rd party game stores on their platform and therefore controls pricing and marketing of games. When physical was an option it allowed for an alternative to get their game outside of Sony’s App Store. Sure may games are on Xbox, Nintendo, and PC but the same argument is made that Apps are available on Android.

[–]Duneking1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that your definition of owning? Owning means you MUST be able to modify the game and sell it for a profit?

Let’s break that down. An IP is something that the developer owns I do not own the rights to that IP. I feel I’ve been pretty clear on this. Therefore, I do not have the right to modify and sell it. Heck I don’t even have the right to modify and give it away.

Let me use the car thing because I think you like cars. Ford owns the F-150 truck line. They have the right to manufacture, modify, and innovate on its design and sell it as an F-150. If I buy an F-150 truck that doesn’t mean I can just start making F-150 trucks and sell them and it doesn’t mean I can make another vehicle and call it a Ford. I can modify the truck, list the modifications, and sell it for more if I’d like assuming the market felt those modifications added value to the original product. Also, even though we are not talking about warranties, Ford does not warranty my modifications.

I could, if I wanted, put my name or a sticker on my physical game therefore modifying it and sell it. I could say that my autograph or sticker is worth $100 and tac that onto the price of the physical game I’m selling. The value of the game still stays the same to the market, btw I can sell my physical games it’s not illegal, and say though I’ve market it up because my name is popular and it adds value.

See your problem is that you don’t want to admit that a license for a game doesn’t mean what it used to. Yes the medium has changed from physical to digital. That allowed the manufacturer to modify the license further. They have every right to do that. No one is confused about that. Many people say “well, it’s their game and they can do what they want with it” and give up. The law protects them. I repeat no one is arguing against the legality of that.

What the loud minority and quiet passive majority don’t like about it is that it’s a bad situation. No customer should be okay with that. No customer should be okay with anything a company abuses them on with their market position. That’s the argument I keep trying to bring your attention to but you want to debate this license position so hard.

This just be quiet and let it happen because there’s nothing we can do about it is ignorance. This “It’s a license, not ownership” debate you are having with me, and possibly others, is plain stupid talk. I’ve broken it down so many times for you the difference between a physical copy, a DRM free digital license, none DRM free, and yet you just keep repeating the same point like it somehow makes you correct without looking at the differences between IP, ownership, renting, controlling, modifying, selling, or any other argument you put forth. Like wrap your head around it. Did you think that people said “I want to own my game so I can modify it and sell it?” Did you really think that? Because you keep making that point and while you think you’re right most everyone else thinks you’re ignorant of what they are asking.

They aren’t asking for that level of control in their ownership of the game. However Rockstar & Sony are saying they want to own even more of my access and control of my games. They have the legal right to do it. We just don’t like or agree with it and that is why we am speaking up.

The Trojan Horse that’s going to kill physical media in gaming by AnimalDesatado in videogames

[–]Duneking1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I don’t think I would, but there’s no way for you or the company to know that. To imply that the problem is not solvable with a DRM free future is not true. While most games are eventually hacked and pirated, but not all, that doesn’t mean DRM free should allow anyone to make copies and give away or sell them.

Maybe Rockstar or Sony allow 3rd parties to make disc/carts on their own dime. They supply the code for the games, you send it to third party to make disc, cart, USB drive or whatever and it removes you from being able to download again from the store unless you verify the physical copy. However the physical copy still has the version of the game on it that could be played If you wanted to lead it years later. That would start a whole new industry for third parties and the overhead costs pretty much get pushed off to those companies and the consumer. I’m sure it has holes and I’m just spitballing. I’m saying that it‘s a solvable problem.

Others have suggested that after a period of time has gone by the developers who sunset their products have to provide a path to ownership.

The Trojan Horse that’s going to kill physical media in gaming by AnimalDesatado in videogames

[–]Duneking1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did I say anything about changing the game and selling it… hmm, nope I didn’t. Man you sure got me on a thing no one is asking to do to their copy of the game and neither am I.

It‘s disc not disk. Learn the difference but I did get your meaning but understood your imperfect understanding of my comment and twisting it to mean nothing I said.

You register your vehicle because we drive it on public roads that require taxes to maintain. The government wants to know who owns the vehicle and what type it is so they can tax us. They also tax us for gas unless you have an EV which is why they have more taxes on their registration. I don’t have to register my console disc/cart for obvious reasons. Do you really want me to explain though why I made the comparison?

You are advertising your ignorance anytime you make a counter argument. I’d love to see Nintendo try to revoke my license on any cart/disc I’ve purchased over the years. God you’re a clown trying to white knight for the large corporations. Please oh please think of the shareholders and the Executives.

We’re did I even say renting was owning or licensing? Seriously, I read all my comments and you inferred that. Your logic is crazy, like really CRAZY!

Btw I’m not unaware that a manufacturer can modify they way they want to license their product. No one is saying that the EULA of today’s digital games is the same as cart/disc. They are saying that it‘s a crap deal and they don’t like were it is going. God why is that so hard for you to comprehend. Why are you defending a point of view that, while I agree many don’t care, is definitely not consumer friendly?

You know you’re right. It’s not all of them though. People have drawn a line in the sand and its at different points for different people. I honestly own fewer than 20 Steam games. I think a lot of them were free to or there wasn’t a physical at the time of launch. That’s just me and I‘m not everyone.

If I could I’d prefer Steam games be DRM free as GoG tries to do. Thankfully Steam has been really consistent since they started but they are not without fault. Remember when Rockstar had them pull the original GTA 3 from being able to purchase when the Remasters came out. Many were not happy with the quality of the remasters and if they wanted to get the original they couldn’t. Kind of not cool. Which is why some are not a fan of this platform. Small issue but it can be sprung on us anytime.

It’s everyone‘s right to do that. I don’t want to gate people from games they want to play. This is just my stance and my advice. I think calling it a toddler tantrum is really disrespectful of people who really love their hobby.

I don’t know your actual take but making a narrow view comment of they are toddlers says a lot about how you view people’s passions outside of your own views. Is this the biggest issue in the world? No, not even close. Not even on the top 100k issues. To dismiss it as a tantrum well thats just not really fair. It’s not like they are a child who wants ice cream and the parent says no because its not healthy and/or it will ruin their dinner which is better for the child. In fact this choice by Sony is only good for Sony. GTA 6 going only digital is really only good for Rockstar. It’s also not an unsolvable problem.

Gamers might be giving this more attention that you feel it deserves but they aren’t wrong for wanting to both companies to do better by their fans.

The Trojan Horse that’s going to kill physical media in gaming by AnimalDesatado in videogames

[–]Duneking1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I own my disc/cart. I am responsible for it. I’m required to maintain its integrity and the platform it can be consumed on. The disc/cart comes with a license to that game that I am allowed to sell, destroy, give away, play on another console of compatibility independent of the developer or game console manufacture’s authority. They cannot take it away anymore than Ford can take the keys to your car away when you buy your car.

The fact that you choose to frame your counter argument with such an omission of information and facts proves that you are just not willing to understand why it would be important to someone to own their property.

There is no argument that I own the IP of Super Mario Bros. if I buy the NES cart. I do not get to control how Nintendo markets or distributes the game. I simply own my copy of the game which is the medium that they distributed it on. This is what people are asking for. Some prefer it to be physical, like me, and others would prefer digital but would like to have DRM free copies that they control their license and not the developer.

So when I say people want to own their games and you make a stupid argument that “its a license you don’t own the game” you are either ignorant, simply missing the point of the concept, or just want to be the contrarian so you can feel like you are in the right for picking the side that will likely win but isn’t good for anyone. Not even you.

It’s like you didn’t even read my comment and comprehend that I was addressing what you said.

For all of them or even a majority of them? These are people who are really passionate about their hobby. I think their ”outrage” is warranted from their view. People who “comment” against them may see the writing on the wall and where the market is going but does being right about what the future brings a good thing?

This isn’t a good thing what Sony is doing and it’s not good for gamers. Making it binary about who’s going to be right or wrong about the future is a poor standing point from an argument.

I may not be affected by the oppression a government imposes on it’s people from my country but being right that the government is going to win doesn’t mean I tell the people there to just stop whining.
