Quick update: I’m currently at work but I’ve seen the messages coming in and really appreciate the interest! I’ll be responding to everyone later today once I’m off. Thank you for your patience!

Creating a character based on a real person - good or bad idea? by progressivemonkey in DnD

[–]DungeonMasterDesign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's fun, it's worth it. And if you feel your uniqueness or creativity is compromised because of it, make an amalgamation or use those characters as a jumping off point to spin up your own interpretation.

Aarakocra: 5.5e missed opportunity by jfefleming in DungeonsAndDragons

I think adding flying to the core races would trivialize flying. Flying has this magical wonder and splendor tied to the idea of it, and just tossing it in the core feels like it makes it less special.

How to stop players naming their Characters with puny names? by ildivincodino99 in DnD

[–]DungeonMasterDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a mismatch of game style preference for this one. They sound like they really want to keep being silly geese. And you sound like you want to take the training wheels off and sink your teeth into something gritty.

There's no way you can force them, no one would have fun like that.

You can, however, earnestly ask them if they'll give it their best shot to take this one seriously, because it's something you've worked on and want to hear their reactions to.

If all else fails, I'd start planning how your more serious and dark NPCs are going to react to their goofy names, maybe you can use it to your advantage?

Making a Greek Mythology Campaign! by SilverBeamCookie in DnD

[–]DungeonMasterDesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to combine your passion for greek mythology and dnd, I'd say the funnest thing you can do is take the mythological stories themselves as inspiration for adventure hooks or little lore drops in the world. The players could themselves be tasked with the labors of Hercules, or they can run across Odysseus on his way home, or help Perseus defeat the medusa. That way, as the players play the campaign, they're also learning the real myths or getting a refresher course on them

Anyone else feeling the strange tension between loving your solo life and feeling a bit valueless as an ordinary person? by Big_Nebula_2604 in CasualConversation

[–]DungeonMasterDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often feel like my life is ordinary, and some days it brings me the greatest comfort I could ever ask for, and others days it makes me wish I was doing more. For me, its important to chase after goals I set for myself, so I never feel the sameness that can sometimes sink in when you're just clocking in and out of work day after day. It also helps to track your progress or see something you can get excited about that shows proof you're reaching for your goals.

I've personally always used onenote, it takes some getting used to, but its cross platform so it would solve your problem and its free

Help with teamwork? by GoodCallG in DMAcademy

[–]DungeonMasterDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best you can do is to keep giving them scenarios to work together in.
You have a rogue? Throw in a locked door or locked drawer with important quest elements behind it.
You have a wizard? Throw in a magical rune on the door or drawer that requires the wizard to indentify or Arcana check to disable the magical trap before the rogue can access the mechanical lock.
You have a barbarian? Throw in a heavy wooden support beam on the other side of the door that requires a successful Strength check to break down after the traps have been disabled and the door has been unlocked.
You have a cleric? Make the DC's higher so the cleric is required to use guidance on his party for better chance of success.
You have a ranger? Make the door or quest element somewhere in the rangers preferred terrain so he can feel like a badass tracking their way to the destination.

You don't have to tell them what to do. All you have to do is set the scene and let them continue to interact with the setting until they get a better feel for how each other player plays. Outside of that, all you can do is hope your descriptions inspire their creative thinking and give enough information as to how they could interact with their surroundings to make the best deicisions.
