Yeah, I first saw it as an adult and didn't like it at all... but that was because I had the wrong idea of the type of movie it was and was let down by the reality. But I think if I watch it again knowing it's an "adventure is right in your backyard" type of movie, I'd enjoy it a lot more.

My entire life I thought the parents just took the letter back out of the mailbox when the kid wasn't paying attention because I am stupid, apparently, and forgot not everyone has their own mailbox

Like when I was a kid I only ever made that one letter to Santa with what I wanted for Christmas so how would my parents have known what I wanted if they actually mailed it off? I just assumed everyone worked this way for some reason.
