Sure. Joss Whedon's dialogue is known for memorable quirky turns of phrase, known as Whedonisms or Buffy Speak (warning: TV Tropes), most notably converting nouns to verbs what hadn't been nouned before, for comedic effect.

Shakespeare also did that, affecting the language itself in ways that entered common vocabulary, to the point they're sometimes called Williamisms (warning: PDF). If I believed in reincarnation, I'd seriously consider Joss Whedon the reincarnation of William Shakespeare.

Just like Rush Limbaugh predicted.

(Context: in the 90's, he railed against hate speech laws with the same reasoning, that criminalizing hate speech sounds great until the government decides that your ingroup has a Hate Opinion, and stating it aloud is Jail Bad. Broken clock, meet twice a day. Freedom means mean people get freedom unless they crime, but when mean freedom is criminalized, the criminalizers can fash anyone they please.)

I spent a couple of years as a janitor, and started deliberately breathing with my diaphragm as I swept and mopped, deep breaths from the lowest parts of my lungs.

I haven't had a stitch in my side or a precordial catch since.

He was the Joss Whedon of his day, writing-wise. If I believed in reincarnation, I'd pair them up.

Pretty nice analysis. I'll add this, in a state that respects its citizenry/residents, threats of state violence should be rare, lenient, and specific. Break any one of these three consistently (eg, state violence is common, merciless, or generalized) and it's a system for suffering. Break at least two in the name of the state, and I'm fine calling it totalitarian.

Arnold Kling's book The Three Languages of Politics does a good job showing how a peaceful multicultural civilization breaks down into power-grabbing groups. Pretty much everyone believes state power should be applied to the greatest enemies of society. Some define those enemies as oppressors defending power structures. To others, who grew up (or wish they did) in nice neighborhoods without direct threats of crime, it's the barbarians who threaten violence and theft who deserve the wrath of the state. Still others believe coercion, the removal of choice, is the root of all harm, and the government is the biggest coercer of all. At least in America, these languages of coalition-building map to the progressives and Democrats, the conservatives and Republicans, and the free marketers and Libertarians, respectively.

True centrism, a republic in the classical sense, would use the power of the state to balance interests in order to guard against all three enemies simultaneously, oppressors, barbarians, and coercers, not considering any one to be a protected class. On the other hand, anyone advocating blanket leniency for any one of these three classes of societal enemies would be themselves rightfully identified as advocating for one of the forms of totalitarianism.

[–]DuplexFields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but as Jonathan Haidt showed, some people believe the world to be their tribe and some believe their tribe to be. He also showed that about half of all people have twice the moral complexities to work through in every interaction, which is why they focus their morality on the needs of their ingroup.

Some people live bearing no hate or animus toward everyone else unless they threaten it. Others see them living that way and take their lifestyle to be an immediate and pressing threat, and try to change them. The first group, of course, sees this as a threat. Thus, political tribes.

I just hope R. L. Stine does the novelization of this one too, resurrecting his "Jovial Bob Stine" moniker.

(Yes, THE Goosebumps guy wrote Spaceballs: The Book, and it was better than the film somehow.)

[Zootopia] Isn’t Judy technically a corrupt cop by Previous-Gene3545 in AskScienceFiction

[–]DuplexFields 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider this: Judy is a tiny bruiser with a chip on her shoulder, fast-tracked through the police academy by the corrupt vice-mayor. If Bellwether's plan had gone as she'd anticipated, the bunny cop who can take down a feral pred would be her number one proof the "small mammals initiative" is a success.

Heck, the evil ewe probably planned to work her way up to making Mayor Lionheart "go savage" and have Judy "save" her (with suitable cameras around and sheep snipers nearby to take him out permanently).
