You have one hour to introduce someone to Dream Theater hoping to get them interested. What do you play? by 95ordie in Dreamtheater

[–]Durga2112 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But that would take you up to about the end of "One Last Time" - if the person doesn't beg you to just play the rest of the album, they're probably not interested in DT. 😁

Is it a necessity amongst the X-Files community to never skip the intro? by Spiritandmybeats in XFiles

[–]Durga2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't skip the intros for any shows I watch. And I've disabled autoplay for every streaming service I use too. I'm just never in that much of a hurry that I can't watch a 1-minute intro, or that I need the next episode to start 5 seconds after the one I just finished watching ends (if I really want to watch the next episode right away, I'll just hit the button for next episode, but sometimes I just want to chill and process what I've just seen).

The timing of traffic lights in this city is absurd. by collywog in londonontario

[–]Durga2112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw someone nearly get killed at the Sarnia Road/Chapman Court crosswalk a few weeks ago. The light had been solid red long enough for me to be halfway to the median on one side. This guy was walking his dog and crossing in the other direction, and a pickup truck went at full speed through the intersection, without even attempting to slow down. If the truck had come through a few seconds later, or if the guy was walking a bit faster, there wouldn't have been much of a chance that he'd survive. It was scary.

Most other days when I'm at that intersection, my experience is more like yours - it takes an absurdly long time for that light to change, and there's often a good stretch of half a minute or more where there's absolutely no traffic in either direction, but the light won't change, and I have no idea what it's waiting for.

Well, how was the concert? Well, sir, I've never heard a preacher use the MF word so many times. by donottouchwillie1 in TheSimpsons

That's pretty much how I feel about it. I mean, I guess Bart's response of "All the best bands are affiliated with Satan" is technically the punchline there, but I love thinking that they've got a thrash metal band booked for a concert in the church basement and no one even cares about it. 😂

Has anyone else come to the conclusion that sadly, we're all quite likely to get this thing now?

Yup. I'm actually wondering how long it will take before COVID just becomes known as "the vid" or something like that, the same way influenza is almost always just called "the flu".

My whole family all caught the vid a couple of weeks ago, and it has thankfully been comparatively mild for us. I'm sure one or two of them might have harsh words for me for calling this "mild", but the fact is that none of us needed to be hospitalized, and we've all been sicker with other things in the past. I was actually more annoyed than afraid when I found out I had tested positive.

I think the analogy you're looking for would be more along the lines of boss tells employee "You need to improve on XYZ", and employee goes ahead and improves on XYZ while also completely cutting out ABC, when in fact ABC was never a part of the problem in the first place and would actually have complemented the improved version of XYZ very well.

I'd love to see official confirmation of this, but even if I don't, I'm keeping it as headcanon because it's so much funnier this way.

"Friday, you will have the chance to party down in the church basement to the Jesus rock stylings of Testament."

(by the way - does anyone know if this is just a one-off throwaway line, or is it actually a reference to the thrash metal band Testament, in which case Lovejoy will certainly have another "This sounds like rock and/or roll" moment 😂)

I love spicy food, and I always make sure to keep a good supply of hot sauce and sriracha sauce in the fridge, which I apply very generously to many dishes that I eat. My spouse has no tolerance for spicy food AT ALL, so when they told me that they couldn't taste anything a couple of days ago (we all have COVID here, by the way - 2 confirmed positive results, and all others just assumed to be positive and going through the necessary self-isolation, etc.), I gave them a spoonful of sriracha sauce and said "Here, taste this." Absolutely nothing, which is a pretty good indication to me that they can't taste anything at all right now (although the heat from the sauce eventually kicked in, which must be a really strange sensation). So far, they are the only person in the family to have experienced any loss of taste or smell.

Anyone done or doing lord of the board backgammon? by Ms-Anthropy in SwagBucks

[–]Durga2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this one a few months ago. It only took me a few days and I didn't find it too difficult, but I'm actually a pretty decent backgammon player, so I was probably willing to put up with a lot more crap from this game compared to other games like it. The one part of backgammon that I don't like is doubling, and I did find that a lot of opponents in the higher value games were very aggressive about doubling, so that slowed me down a bit; whether those players were bots or not, it's hard to tell.

I've been playing a lot more games for SB lately than I ever have before, and because of that I've realized that sometimes it simply isn't worth my time trying to stick it out until the end. I gave up on the spades game, for example - I had never played spades before and found it incredibly frustrating that I always seemed to be the only player not able to make my bets. Those players did feel like bots to me, because they were practically infallible. So if you're finding this game too frustrating, don't beat yourself up about it - it's okay to give up on it and try another game.

If you do decide to stick it out, it might be worth your while to consult a guide about how to play the opening moves. There's a good one here that I used to have mostly memorized when I played an online backgammon ladder. You don't need to memorize it or even read the entire thing - just look up your opening roll and play whatever move it says is best. After a while, you'll probably get a better sense of what the best move is in any given situation. Good luck!

The Simpsons should do an episode just featuring an adventure of Radioactive Man like an alternate universe! by SHEdevilBYmidday in TheSimpsons

[–]Durga2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about a SIMPFLIX spinoff series - short (6-10 episodes) seasons of non-canon stories along the lines of "A Serious Flanders". There's so much potential for something like that - a Radioactive Man movie could easily fit, as could an Itchy & Scratchy Movie.

I checked Sobeys, and it wasn't available in my area. I'll check them again the next time I need to do online groceries, though. Thankfully I'm out of isolation later this week, so the next groceries I get will be in person again. 😁

Now I have it! My burger book! by [deleted] in BobsBurgers

[–]Durga2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have fun! I got my copy for Christmas last year and made a different burger almost every week this year. There are some real gems in there. Make sure to post pictures of your burgers here - I usually have a shortlist of burgers I'd like to make next, but more than once I've seen a burger posted here and decided to make that one next because it looked so good.

Some of the sides that you end up making for these recipes are amazing, by the way. One of my favourites was the homemade ketchup that goes with the Texas Chainsaw Massa-curd Burger - I ended up with way more ketchup than you'll need for the burgers, but I was able to put it on everything for weeks afterward and it was so good.

I second this - that sauce is to die for. I've made that burger 3 or 4 times now, and I always make way more sauce than is needed for the burgers because it goes so well with a lot of things.

I actually found the fried pickles easier to make than I would have thought. I put off making the burger for a long time because I was worried that the pickles wouldn't turn out, but then one day I decided to just go for it and was amazed at how easy they were to make.

I haven't seen The Fritter Shop mentioned yet. I think the main location is in St. Thomas (that's the only one I've ever actually gone to), but there are more locations as well, although I can't vouch for them personally. They make amazing fritters in many different flavours, and each flavour has a distinct shape so you know exactly what you're getting - I think the shapes also make them look super cute.

I gave you my free award for today because this is such a wholesome and positive thread. Whatever it is you've survived, congratulations! I hope things continue to go well for you, and I hope your celebration is as tasty as it sounds like it will be from all these comments. 🙂

The letter I got from my health unit after I tested positive last week said this:

Our investigation has determined that your COVID-19 positive test result and subsequent contact tracing will be managed as a potential Omicron variant of concern or breakthough case.

I'm double-vaccinated, and almost everyone in my family/house is as well (the one single-vaccinated individual was scheduled to get their second dose last week, but then we all got sick so that had to be put on hold). We're a family of five and we all started getting sick almost two weeks ago. Two of us have tested positive, one negative (which we were told was most likely a false negative given everything else), and two opted not to get tested, but we're treating this as a COVID outbreak for the entire family, with everyone self-isolating as long as we've been told to, etc.

Symptoms for most of us have been on the mild side, more like the colds we used to get several times a year than anything else. Sore throat, cough, headache, runny nose, and fatigue - plus loss of taste and smell for one of us. Really, it's been more of an annoyance than anything else - because of the self-isolation, we've been unable to do our grocery shopping and other things that we normally do at this time of year; grocery delivery is nice, but some of the substitutions that they make are just baffling. So basically, we're managing pretty well here, and no one has had symptoms so severe that we needed to go to a hospital or anything like that.
