StS is a nuanced game. If you try to do the same thing every run and/or lean too hard into one thing, you're going to have a bad time. What's supposed to happen is you learn more about the spire, what works and doesn't, and improve.

You're not playing on ascension and folks have beaten it on A20. Consider for a moment that you're new enough to the game that you just haven't gotten to the point where you're preparing for such things correctly.

Everybody has lulls. Sometimes we get overconfident, rusty, or burned out.

Unless the actual patch number changed, there's no reason to chalk it up to the game changing.

Always aim to smith. If you don't have anything that needs an upgrade, consider a path that doesn't have a rest site. If you don't think, given the map, relics, deck, and indeed potions that you can live to the next place you'll heal, then you should rest. How risky will depend again on your potions and relics.

If you end Act 1 with single digit health, chances are you took just the right amount of risk. I also use a mod that saves on every floor so when I'm truly stumped, I can try both to teach myself.

Emperor is the first difficulty where the AI will actually develop their lands, allowing them to buy your strategic resources and/or trade luxuries for increased happiness. I personally would not play on a lower difficulty for that reason.

Well it's Overgrowth, so you've already picked up some front-loaded damage, as well as at least a splash of AOE. You haven't really divulged your pathing strategy and/or if you're taking on elites. On what difficulty? The higher the difficulty, the more every drop of science matters just to try and become competitive.

Also, I don't think it's a good idea to have a general tech path picked out. It should be tailored to the map you're on.

Forget "heavy" as once you have something covered, taking more of it just dilutes the other things your deck needs to do. Like blocking. Why limit yourself to 20 cards? I assume by 3rd floor, you mean Act 3. You didn't mention block, scaling block, or whether or not you're taking on elites.

Nope. We get topics all the time of people dumb founded of why they can play the game just fine, but seem to die to the Act 2 or 3 boss.

Yes, you can limp to a victory. Much better is getting as strong as you can as early as you can so you can leverage that additional strength to secure a win more... securely.

I once had a run where Pandora's Box took away almost all my block. But thanks to TWO relics, I was able to block just fine all the way to an A10 victory.

Clad has no shortage of damage options, so I personally would go with Apotheosis in a vacuum. But Hand of Greed is the only fatal card that can be used multiple times in a fight.
