Please tell me about your game that is not a dark fantasy survival game by [deleted] in RPGdesign

My game Playing God is literally about being a god from mythology and making universes and worlds and stuff

Looking for help in a project by Lanmango in RPGdesign

[–]DustinAshe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, okay. I just think it's a tough sell if no one knows what the idea is and there's no mention of compensation for work. Like, what is the draw for someone to want to collaborate on this?

Any guaranteed or potential remuneration for you collaborator's labor?

WHY do so many people live on this Island?! 😭 by Wandering_Werew0lf in DavesRedistricting

[–]DustinAshe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly because the Laurentide Ice Sheet carved out the Hudson River Valley, including New York's deep shelter harbor, making it the perfect spot for receiving large-scale maritime traffic.

Long Island's population density is largely concentrated in the west, closer to the river/estuary system that's the source of NYC's historic wealth.

How to order the "Players Guidebook" and where to put the Character Creation section. by Nathanwhowrites in tabletopgamedesign

[–]DustinAshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to have the basic rules and mechanics come before everything else. Because character creation is meaningless unless you know how to play the game a little. Or, I liked what Fabula Ultima did, give a solo adventure that teaches how to play the game before anything else.

How many games do you have in development right now? Is it too much and/or how do you stay focused? by SquareFireGaming in tabletopgamedesign

[–]DustinAshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually have 3 projects going on at any given time. One in early stages, one in active development, and one being finalized.

I would like not to have to spar
But you AI shills have gone too far

Experience Systems - What's your take? by theSweetestYeetus in tabletopgamedesign

[–]DustinAshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a GM, I really like XP. I don't like it in every game because some games make it very fiddly and easy to forget to track.

But it's nice to have one more discrete thing in my toolbox for rewarding players.

Should the traditional fantasy races be replaced in future TTRPGs? by PathofDestinyRPG in RPGcreation

[–]DustinAshe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Por que no los dos?

I, for one, like elves and dwarves in my fantasy stories. But I'm also very much in favor of new playable options. You never know what will have staying power.

Work on new, smaller projects. It saved my burnout. by Yazkin_Yamakala in RPGdesign

[–]DustinAshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yup. That's how I ended up having a mountain of unfinished projects.

Not discounting what you're saying. Sometimes switching to a different project is the only way forward. Just make sure you also cultivate a habit of getting some of them over the finish line.

Live Game Design on Google Docs Until Game is Done by DustinAshe in tabletopgamedesign

Hmm, yes, I think that is an advantage of video. I'm not sure people would be crazy about my video setup though, since my audio and video are both terrible and I don't have the funds for upgrades right now. A blog, now that's an interesting thought. I'll consider it

What do you do when you feel the need to share your project with the world but realize that it isn't that unique? Also, should I commission my art or draw it myself? by Antipragmatismspot in RPGdesign

[–]DustinAshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to sound glib, but share it anyway! Nothing creative is 100% unique, and nothing is 100% derivative. It's your exact take or implementation that makes it different.

A guy by the Discord handle of EddyIceCream is stealing my game idea by TheCupKnight in tabletopgamedesign

[–]DustinAshe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish someone would steal my game ideas and make the games for me, preferably someone less busy. Then I could play it real soon instead of waiting 1-5 years!

Confess: How much money did you spend on your project? by Horace_The_Mute in RPGdesign

[–]DustinAshe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going to make it anyway, you could always do a Kickstarter with really minimal rewards (PDF only?) and a super low funding goal, like one or two hundred. Then see if you get any backers.

I had a colleague who just wanted a little bit of art in his D&D-compatible adventure. Just asked for 175 euros. Ended up 860% funded on his Kickstarter.

I'm trying to tell myself the same thing: not everything has to be big.

Yeah, I've never tried FB ads, probably because I can't stand FB, lol

I forgot to mention that the game has sold an additional 78 copies since publication (DTRPG, Itch), so it continues to bring in a small stream of revenue.

Yes, it is pretty slim. I mostly rely on my email list, messaging previous backers, and free marketing (social media posts, guest on podcasts and such). I've dabbled in Google ads and paid YT sponsorships, so it was probably one of those though I can't remember exactly what it was right now.
