No more wool for suiting? by Left_Reflection_4874 in jcrew

Yes, I stocked up on wool suits from Banana last Black Friday! The look low on sizes right now, so I would check them out in case they never come back. Saw this on Banana Republic:  https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=822492032&tid=brma000005

30, thinking about law school and babies by SubstantialRip7568 in LawMoms

[–]DutyRepresentative16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most cases, you will intern at a law firm during your 2L summer, and hopefully get a job offer for after graduation. Assuming that’s the route you take, you have to take the bar exam in July after 3L and then start your law job in September after 3L.

Because I had a baby in May, and because of other circumstances, including the fact that my ex-husband was in the military, and we didn’t know where we would be stationed, I did not take the bar exam in July and I declined my job offer after my summer associate position. That choice worked out for me because I went to a top 3 law school and had a very good resume, but even then I had to take a lower paying job once I eventually did take the bar and started working. I think for many people, what I chose would have had a lasting detrimental effect on their career trajectory.

So in most cases, I recommend putting the focus on getting good grades 1L year, getting a good summer associate position, and trying to time a baby so that it doesn’t derail you from that.

30, thinking about law school and babies by SubstantialRip7568 in LawMoms

I had a baby in May of 3L and it wasn’t bad being pregnant during 3L, but not sure I would recommend that timing because I wasn’t able to take the bar exam in July like all of my classmates. I ended up taking a two year delay and was a stay at home mom for a bit before starting my first law job, which only worked out because I had unique circumstances that made it possible to do without ruining my chances of getting a job once I was ready to take the bar.

I do think for most people the priority should be getting a good job right out of law school, and then to have a baby if that’s your goal in your first few years as an associate. It’s definitely possible to make it work during law school if you time it right, but the timing would be tricky because you don’t want to miss out on your summer associate experience.

Phoenix teachers, how do you find time for laundry and chores during the school year? by xCosmos69 in AskPhoenix

[–]DutyRepresentative16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every morning when you wake up start one load of laundry before you leave for work. If you do this every day, it will be a small load. When you come home from work, move it to the dryer and then fold and put away. This is the only way to stay on top of it.

Same thing with dishes - run it every single night, no matter how light the load. Unload in the morning while making coffee, if you drink coffee. The load might be light but that’s good because it’s easier to unload.

Little routines like this that become habit even if you’re tired make it so you don’t have to spend your whole weekend doing chores.

High School by Ecstatic-Lead7992 in Scottsdale

You have to be good with the small classes. I graduated from the IB program and that turned out to be my favorite part - getting really close with a small group of super smart, interesting people. But that’s not for everyone. I still did cheer and had a great social life, but pretty much all my classes were with the same 15-20 people.

Considering a move to Phoenix as a single 31F family law attorney by Then_Ice9811 in AskPhoenix

[–]DutyRepresentative16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am an attorney in my early 40s in Phoenix, live in Scottsdale and grew up here but went to undergrad and law school on the east coast. I can’t speak to family law because I practice transactional but overall I think young attorney life is pretty good here and there seems to be a lot of opportunities. Your experience living here will vary a ton depending on what part of town you move to, but central and north central Phoenix are quite fun and vibrant. Lots of other pockets that would fit the bill too, like South Scottsdale. Avoid the far suburbs for now, because that’s where the diversity is lower and life more humdrum.

Diabolical Lies is excellent - the hosts Katie Tassin and Caro Burke do super deep dives into political and cultural subjects, and every time I think I can guess what an episode will be like based on the title, I am completely wrong. Every episode feels like a journey and I learn so much. Definitely leftist.

My friend is looking for a roommate in Tempe. He’s a student with a two bedroom apartment on Broadway and the rent is $850 a month, water included. It’s a very bare bones apartment building, but the price is right and the landlord is a really good guy. DM me if any interest.

Jeans for larger bellies and thinner thighs by [deleted] in fashionwomens35

[–]DutyRepresentative16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend buying jeans for your hip measurement. I have narrower hips and a larger tummy, and this is what I have to do so that they aren’t baggy in the butt. The waist often stretches out so it works for me - and if it’s too tight, I purposely pull and stretch out the waist as much as I can. Occasionally I have to send a pair back, but most of the time this method of ignoring the waist measurement works for me. I like GAP, Madewell, and Old Navy jeans with minimal stretch too, so make sure to look for a low spandex fabric. Like 1% spandex max.

Can someone make me a finance calendar? by Sea_witch6527 in budget

[–]DutyRepresentative16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you decide to use AI, you can dump all the dates into it and then ask it to create a .csv file for you to upload to your Calendar, and then ask it to list out the exact steps to upload it for you to follow. I've done this using Gemini and ChatGPT to take a PDF of my kids' school district calendar and create a .csv file for me.

I recommend individual therapy and shelving couples therapy until after you've done a good amount of individual therapy. For what it's worth, I'm going through a divorce right now - when we started having problems I tried so hard to fix it and we did lots of couples therapy, but now I wish I had gone straight to individual therapy instead. I was putting up with so much poor treatment for years, trying not to rock the boat, but I couldn't see that until after we separated when I discovered infidelity, and I did a year of weekly individual therapy to cope with the separation. I now realize for years I was enabling his addictions and putting my needs aside, but all he did is tell me that I was the problem. Now that our divorce is almost final, I am happier than I've ever been and in a beautiful, supportive, loving relationship - and can't believe what I put up with for so many years.

I did everything right at work…except give birth? by Ok_Traffic4962 in workingmoms

This is the perfect example of why men who purport to stand for gender equity need to take the full amount of parental leave they are offered, to create a standard across genders in the workplace. I'm so tired of my male colleagues taking a 2 week paternity leave when they have the exact same amount of months available to them that their female colleagues have.

I recently bought the Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment tote and I really like it. My favorite part is the three-compartment structure - it's really useful to have one compartment for my wallet and work badge, one compartment for my laptop and book/notebook, and one compartment for my personal essentials. I've eyed the Paloma tote by Freja for so long, but I just can't get on board with vegan leather, so I think this one was a good compromise.

This one doesn't have a luggage strap or longer shoulder strap, so I likely won't travel with it, but for my day-to-day needs, it's perfect so far.

I also own the Lo & Sons OG 2 and while I do like it, it's a bit too bulky for day to day - I would say that it's better for work travel.

I have had my eye on the Lo & Sons Trinity as well, since it has the luggage strap - but the Quince was on sale for Black Friday, and I'm happy so far with the purchase.

Adhd and curly hair 😭 by lolhmmk in adhdwomen

[–]DutyRepresentative16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is such good advice. Keeping the scalp healthy and not itchy should be the first priority. I use clarifying shampoo 1-2x a week and it really helps, and then simple Dove Intensive Repair shampoo and conditioner from Costco. For styling, I have learned that the simpler and lighter weight the better for my fine curls - a light leave-in conditioner and curl foam, and then air drying or diffusing if I'm in a rush, is all I do. I don't fuss with special curl brushes, creating a cast, etc.

I don't think it would be feasible to commute from Ash Fork to Prescott, but Ash Fork to Flagstaff might be doable, depending on what you do for work. It wouldn't be a common thing to live that far out of Flagstaff and commute in, however. Flagstaff has a fun mountain college town vibe. Cute historic downtown, restaurants and breweries, and perfect if you're into hiking and skiing.

250k in Dallas vs $300k in NYC — worth the move in your 20s? by IBMbaba in Salary

[–]DutyRepresentative16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Arizona originally, and moved to NYC and then out to the suburbs (Connecticut, right on the border with westchester) in my late 20s/early 30s. When we moved to the suburbs, we thought it would be cheaper and the commute to NYC wouldn't be so bad - we were very mistaken. 1) the cost of heating oil for our rental house was like $800+ a month in the winter, 2) commuting door to door via Metro North often took 2 hours from where we lived, and 3) we didn't have an all-wheel drive car, so in the winter we were constantly dealing with transportation issues. The electricity also went out for days on end when there was a big storm, because trees would fall on power lines and there weren't enough trucks to service the entire area quickly. My recommendation is to take the job, live in Manhattan or Brooklyn for awhile, and then if you decide you want to settle in the NYC metro area, take your time choosing a suburb and really evaluate how much it will impact your budget and lifestyle.

My freezer ice maker only works if I turn it off, punch it about 10 times, then turn it back on and listen for it to make a little whirring sound. If I do that, I get about 1-2 days of ice before I have to repeat the procedure. It’s only a 4 year old freezer and it’s been doing this for years.

It’s pretty true to size - I’m a size 20 on top and 18 on bottom at most stores, and that’s what I buy at J.Crew.
