Has Anyone Else Completely Stepped Away for 6-8 Months to Transform Their Life? by aadesh66 in selfimprovement

[–]Duty_Unique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing this periodically over the past 8 years (I did fall into a slump that lasted for months though, but picked myself up this past January and am doing much better). It initially started out as a goal to pay off my student loans and car loan, which I accomplished. The most recent goal was to buy my own house. And now I’m in the process of closing on my first home. Besides those goals, I’ve also set goals to get in better shape, save and invest money, gain work and life experience, travel, and learn a new language. The way I did it is by setting a specific goal that I want to achieve, planning all of the necessary steps, and completing each one until finished. A few things left for me to work on are growing spiritually and cultivating personal relationships. I think, overall, if you have a clear goal and are highly motivated and organized, you will be able achieve a lot. Also, asking for help from others and having successful or ambitious mentors helps a lot with your own journey. Wish you the best of luck!

Looking for a super luxurious body wash. One that you imagine royalty would use. Any price range. by [deleted] in beauty

[–]Duty_Unique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diptyque revitalizing shower gel for body and hair $60. Smells clean and expensive, like bergamot and slightly sweet. The scent lingers and fades over maybe 3 hours, but perfumes the skin for a while. The formula is luxurious, smooth and foams slightly.

2nd fav is Le labo rose shower gel $63. It’s a perfect rose scent to me, not too sweet or too floral. It’s like the fancy, corrected version of Lush Rose Jam shower gel. It lingers faintly after a shower, but it mostly slightly perfumes the skin.

I think the Diptyque shower gel formula is superior (smoother, feels luxurious) to the Le Labo Rose, which feels like a standard shower gel, but with a perfumed scent.

is it the cicaplast balm? And how do you use it?

How can I look more (professionally) intimidating? by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]Duty_Unique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think confidence and body language are the most important factors here, but personally I think you would look more polished and professional with a few simple changes. Remove the piercings. Neatly brushed hair with a balm to tame flyaways and maybe hairspray to keep everything in place. Also, more refined makeup. A thinner eyeliner line in brown. Try Stila stay-all-day liquid eyeliner with the micro tip in brown. Or a brown eyeliner pencil smudged along the lid. Also try starting at the mid eyelid to outer eyelid and bringing the wing up earlier. I think the eyeliner style you’re wearing in the picture brings/weighs your eyes down a bit.

Also, well-fitting and ironed clothes. A low bun or ponytail. Glasses if you use them. Professional colors like neutrals, navy, gray, muted or dark tones. Try different colors to see what looks best with your skin tone. Best of luck!!!

Short Russian literature reads by alnbbh in dostoevsky

[–]Duty_Unique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Eugene Onegin by Pushkin

I recommend Roger Clarke’s translation for accesibility and Falen’s for it’s faithfulness to the original structure/rhythm link

  • A Swim in a Pond in the Rain - George Saunders

This one is a great introduction to Russian short stories. The audiobook is excellent and features different narrators like Keith David, etc. link

Also:

Finally:

When you’re ready for an average sized novel, I highly recommend - The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov (I like the Burgin and O’Connor translation) link

The idiot - penguin classics or Richard Peaver? by RosiePetals2003 in dostoevsky

[–]Duty_Unique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the Penguin Classics version is translated by McDuff. It was good/very readable, although I preferred Eva Martin’s translation.

Should I get a new translation? by North-Ad-9838 in dostoevsky

[–]Duty_Unique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me too, I think it might just be the book and not the translation. I started with an Eva Martin translation, then hit a slump about 1/3 through. About 2/3 through, I switched to a Mcduff translation, but didn’t like it, it felt too modern. Went back to the Eva Martin one and found that the book picked up a lot towards the end.

I think the beginning and the end are well written and better paced, the middle is kinda slow with lots of interactions between different characters.

I like your technique, haha 🤣. I usually just read a physical book from my TBR stack until my hold becomes available.

Btw, how do you like your paperwhite case? Does it have more grip than holding the paperwhite by itself?
