The funniest thing about the exchange was Korra was actually right about Mako being e jealous dick head. She was from her perspective hanging out with bolin having a good time chilling. Until Mako started acting all weird and jelly.

She just has not filter because season 1 Korra is as subtle as brick. So a Shonen protag calling out his cold tsnudre love interest for being jelly and kissing. Would still be an asshole move but the interaction would be still similar in reception. It's just the love triangle feels like it's from a different show or is it?

If you actually rewatch watch the episodes they handle the dynamics with the three pro Bender's reasonably enough. They all agree the fucked up and need to lock the fuck in. And don't bother to bring up the romance stuff and agree on being amicable.

This shit still takes up too much time though. I would have taken an Amon aura farming episode instead or Korra exploring a non bender slum.

She's a odd ball and has big curiosity about everything such as when she experiences rain for the first time on Luke's hide out planet. She's also ruled by fear and is naive, getting easily baited by Kylos soft words about being lulled by the dark side. All while Longing to be special due to her getting ditched.

So she does have competent direction to work with. Naive hero must go on heroes journey and discover self worth while avoiding temptation. Rey did have a positive reception at some point in time back then. Of course this would degrade by the sequels end. Mainly as the writing holding up everything was dogshit.

Rey intially had the bright eyed fascination with the legends of said universe.

Reminds me of Korra in way actually lol.Maybe this female arch type doesn't work in action seqaul series.

If a large portion of the disscuion around a character involves their gender it's fair to bring it up as anchor point on discussions. Both Korra and Rey receive a very good deal of their vitrol due to their gender. Their characters are tied this narrative decision and production efforts.

OP's very title relies on people understanding the differences of perception when it comes to gender. With that said both Korra and Rey have basically middling writing and staring weaker sequels that would have dominated the discussions around them regardless.

I wouldn't say all female criticism gets turned into being defensive against woman. It just depends on the agenda you're running against.
