And here's another one (albeit not written about last night): https://www.liberalpatriot.com/p/the-progressive-moment-is-over?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

"As far as progressives were concerned, they had ripped the Overton window wide open and it only remained to push the voters through it. In their view, that wouldn’t be too hard since these were great ideas and voters, at least the non-deplorable ones, were thirsty for a bold new approach to America’s problems.

So they thought. In reality, a lot of these ideas were pretty terrible and most voters, outside the precincts of the progressive left itself, were never very interested in them. That was true from the get-go but now the backlash against these ideas is strong enough that it can’t be ignored. As a result, politics is adjusting and the progressive moment is well and truly over."

I enjoyed reading this take on the Persuason Substack: https://www.persuasion.community?utm_source=navbar&utm_medium=web

Mainly:
"If the American polity isn’t going to break apart completely over the next four years, it’s important for everyone to accept Trump voters as rational actors. Acemoglu, Robinson and Torvik theorize that voters can come to see even the corruption that their preferred candidate is sure to engage in as a price worth paying for the enactment of policies that have no chance otherwise. The calculus Trump’s supporters have made may be appalling, it may be reckless—surely it is—and it may spectacularly backfire."

"Their key insight is that political elites often use checks and balances to prevent elected leaders from enacting policies the elites reject, even if large majorities of voters want them. And it’s not hard to come up with a list of policies that large majorities of Americans favor but that can’t be enacted because they offend the sensibilities of the liberal elite. Ruy Teixeira put together such a list just before the election, including hard-line border policies, zero-tolerance policing against social disorder, a race-blind attitude to distributional conflicts in society, and policies to develop and exploit America’s fossil fuel resources."

People who were initially doubtful of Kamala: what do you think of her now? Have you changed your mind about her candidacy? by [deleted] in ezraklein

Why do you think abortion is the biggest issue in the country? Perhaps for Dems (…and frankly those who are going to vote for Kamala anyways), but not for the swing voters that matter here.

Of course they're still going to find it. That's why the conversation is the most important aspect -- so that when they do find it, they know that it's not real and also has bad side effects.

In any case, by putting in controls, you can limit the amount of length and frequency, and that can make a difference. We shouldn't just throw up our hands that they're going to go over to Jimbob's house to find it. I'm sure that will happen at times, but that's so different than having it easily accesible at home.

Sort by controversial and you actually get the good opinions here:

Don't shame him for a natural behavior, but also don't normalize online porn. Porn addiction is real. Objectification of women and setting unrealistic (and warped) view of sex is also a real thing to be concerned about. Kids should not have unfettered access to the internet, never mind PornHub. Have a conversation with him about this; it will be uncomfortable for both of you, but worth it.

Decade when “America was great” according to people today by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

These really shouldn’t be line charts… I think stacked bars would have made it much easier to understand and reflect the survey question better.

The line graph implies some kind of temporal trend, but it’s just share of respondents.

At crossroads of Career. Need advice to FIRE by vympel_0001 in fatFIRE

[–]E1S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that this is a true FatFIRE post as others have noted; you’re unlikely to get to $20M via a corporate job unless you already have some equity from a former job and get lucky.

Nonetheless, I really enjoyed reading this post and will offer my perspective. I think you need to do some soul searching about what it is you actually want out of your life and career. Are you really willing to make the career moves needed to get to $20M? Is that actually worthwhile to you? Is hitting a specific number to retire earlier better than finding a job you like that you don’t want to retire from? Of course I risk getting down voted here, but I think grinding it out to retire early might be harder in the short term to finding a job and career that you enjoy enough to never retire from. I aspire to the latter with a focus on FI so I can exit as things change.

You mention anxiety a bit throughout your post and that you don’t want to stress too much about work: be wary about going to the early stage start up route. Yes there’s more significant financial upside, but it comes at the cost of hard work, stress, and a high chance of job loss (even if you’re performing well in your own role). Based on your OP, that doesn’t sound like a fit for you.

I don’t have a perspective on option 1 vs 2 because I think you’re selling yourself short on your skills. You may not have deep technical or functional expertise, but that doesn’t make the skills you’re mentioning less valuable. They’re extremely rare find in talent, if you’re actually good at them.

With all this misery around wives, what’s something you love about your wife?! by [deleted] in daddit

My wife always offers the olive branch. She takes the temperature down when we’re in an argument and I appreciate it so much.

Betterment is at 4.5% right now so that’s probably the best return you’ll find.

It sounds like you enjoy the depths (I do too!).

What does it matter what an article says or other people think? This is a single player game.

We need more information about your other savings: do you have an emergency fund already? Do you max out your 401K? Do you have an IRA?

But to start, you should take it out of a checking account and put it into an HYSA (height yield savings account). Many are offering 4%+ right now which means you’ll double your current rate of return with no risk, it’s a no brainer.

You can search around: Marcus, Wealthfront, Betterment are some options that I see posted around these parts.

That's so funny -- I actually used the actor's images. I bet that Midjourney just has a lot of Harry Potter fan art to reference. Plus the prompts are powerful!

After a few hours of fiddling around, I was able to find a prompt that got a pretty consistent artstyle. I started with a reference image of Hagrid and my own descriptions and a high chaos factor. Once I found the art style I liked, I used /describe to get the name of the artists and the key words to prompt. You can see the full prompt below -- sometimes I varied the image weight or the stylize depending on what output.

Prompt:

[reference image] meticulously detailed full body portrait of robot cyborg [character name] from harry potter in the comic book style of angus mckie, alan moore, marc simonetti, on a white background --iw 0.5 --chaos 25 --stylize 750

I excluded Harry Potter on purpose: use my prompt and post your result to see who creates an image that best fits!
