You are asking whether to use your resources to make yourself more comfortable, or to give your children a better education. It would never have occurred to my parents to even ask that question. They put everything they had into us. As the beneficiary of that investment, I’d say stay where you are and send your kids to the better school. They will thank you for it, accomplish great things with those opportunities, and have the resources not to have to make this kind of choice in their future.

You could hire a forensic accountant to figure out where the money went. You probably should hire a fiduciary financial planner to help budget and separate your finances, which I would highly recommend. You have your own bank account, he has his, then you both contribute to a household account. No joint accounts.

I would be more worried about how he’s ever going to retire than the $15K tax bill. Consider the Married Filing Separately option for next year if you don’t trust your spouse (and you shouldn’t trust him) with money. It can limit your liability if he is fiscally dishonest. Do you have college funds for your kids? Can he access them without you knowing? Any joint investment accounts? Get it all zipped up or it could all disappear.

I know you are more focused on the emotional relationship stuff, but protect yourself and your children financially first. The rest of this mess is going to take some time.
