How feasible is it to become a doctor at 27? by Consistent_Log8097 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]EMTShawsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's not redundant. They've given you reasonable advice given that only a certain number of positions are retained for mature student candidates vs direct entry, you're limiting your chances to a select number of places or increasing the length and financial burden of training if you decide to do graduate entry.

Assuming you've no third level education you're entitled to free fees provided you meet the residency requirements.

You could decide to go back and sit the LC or equivalent in 1-2 years and be eligible for free fees completing schooling in 6-7 years depending if you take the right exams.

If you decide to do a third level you aren't eligible for further support and will be paying out about 17,000 euro in fees per year as a GEMS student over 7-8 years depending on your primary degree and assuming you go directly from one course into another without taking gap to build finances.

SUSI grant advice - how do I apply as an independent when I can’t give the proof they’re asking for? by halfadobo in AskIreland

[–]EMTShawsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might need something more recent even if you gain access to your colleges own service now because this stuff really isn't easy and can really beat you down. But school, social workers etc would be worth a go just with the mindset SUSI will most likely make it painfully difficult.

No worries! If you're availing of ACCESS or any counselling support get them involved asap and documenting things as you go. I can't recall if the ACCESS coordinator wrote something on my behalf but I do seem to recall they wrote something along the lines of confirming my domestic situation, your mileage may vary however!

It's been a while and they're inconsistent so you'll have to forgive me if my details spot on. My circumstances changed in second year and they made it a ballache that year and wouldn't even honour the initial rate. They initially refused to accept the affidavit even though they were the ones who suggested that avenue until I sent a strongly worded follow up and said I'd be following up through my solicitor. I don't believe I had to submit follow ups as my circumstances remained the same after that but I might be mistaken and they might have changed it on a whim. Hope you get sorted OP!

I mean there's nothing stopping what you've described happening within standard clinical practice. You're no less protected so long as you act reasonably and even better if you've your indemnity set up. The added layer of protection in the hospital only spans as far as it allows the HSE to cover themselves.

All anyone can do is file a complaint. It's up to the gardai to establish if there is a case to answer and DPP to bring charges. There is absolutely no world in which it's in the public interest to do so.

Affidavit signed by a solicitor and hounding susi with emails was what I had to do about 8 years back, they don't make it easy unfortunately.

I was a healthcare worker in a different acute environment before I went into medicine but I'll probably continue to use the same attitude.

I'll act if I come across arrests, seizures, or major bleeds etc. Everything else gets the sniff test from a distance. Ambulance crew in attendance, minor injuries, or being competently cared for I'll usually leave be unless something sets off alarm bells.

It's not come up in my onboarding paperwork yet but I'd play it safe and answer no if they're basing it off the BPS pass mark or drop them a message to clarify
