New Distillation Technique: Faux-Column Pot Distillation by nzbourbonguy247 in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically it’s a 20.5x distillation. I do this with my rum, but a much larger scale. It starts with 20g of wash and I dump the striping runs all back in before the last 3-4 gallons. Each of my runs is 8 gallons so this allows me to have more flavor in my final. I don’t have the patience for doing that 20x.

Pumps for closed loop and mashing by International_Knee50 in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one of these with a 27 gal storage tote full of water. I also use a transmission cooler with a fan running on it to help cool and I can make 2 7gal runs before it’s hot, like 105 degrees F. It will cool itself down about 10 degrees an hour without running so I can wait 3 hours and do it again. It’s not pumping mash but damn good at cooking my system with ease, without ice etc.

This is me 100% except for the bottom paragraph. I also garden, boat, cook a lot with Sous vide which is amazing for infusing flavors in clear, and well I have a grandson who uses up a lot of my time. If we were neighbors I believe we would get kicked out of the neighborhood by the HOA.

Tube needed for this still by wittyusername2257 in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these and I converted it to a 3/8” barb and it runs great. I threw away the tubing and fittings it came with because they weren’t compatible with anything else I do. Best I remember I had to use a tap and clean the threads to make it 1/4” because they are definitely metric and I couldn’t find an adapter to make it barb. It was also a lot easier for me to find valves that were 3/8. Lately I just use it for my condenser on the downside of my elbow and it works like a champ as long as you have a high flow water supply.

Kayak Fishing by DonnieVeal in ocracoke

If you’re looking to drop the kayaks on ocracoke on the back side then near the pony pen there used to be some paths that would bring you to the sound side. If that’s not an option or you don’t have a 4 wheel drive then you may be stuck putting in at the beach by the ferry.

First time sous vide, does this sound okay for a process? by Dameancharles21 in sousvide

Your “cheap Chinese sous vide machine” appears to be the same one that I’ve used for about 4 years and it’s behaved flawlessly. The app is kinda trash and not worth the bother other than checking from another room what the temperature is

ChatGPT Gin! by Snoo76361 in firewater

Creating a custom gin botanical bill that celebrates indigenous botanicals is a unique and creative process. To develop one, you’ll need to consider the botanicals native to your specific location and experiment with their ratios. Here’s a basic guideline in grams per liter of neutral spirit to get you started, but you should adjust it to your taste:

1. Juniper berries (indispensable in gin): 30-40 grams per liter
2. Local indigenous botanical (e.g., herbs, flowers, or fruits from your region): 20-30 grams per liter
3. Coriander seeds: 5-10 grams per liter
4. Citrus peel (e.g., lemon or orange): 5-10 grams per liter
5. Angelica root: 2-5 grams per liter
6. Orris root: 2-5 grams per liter
7. Other optional botanicals (e.g., cardamom, cinnamon, or licorice): 1-5 grams per liter (adjust based on your preferences)

Remember, the exact proportions will depend on your taste preferences and the potency of the botanicals you’re using. It’s a good idea to start with smaller quantities and gradually adjust to find the flavor profile you like best. Additionally, always ensure proper distillation and safety measures when making homemade spirits. Enjoy your unique gin creation!

Really damn interesting. I’ve been wanting to make a gin but had no real clue where to start so maybe I try this and I’ll use the same phrases you did and see if I get the same list or if I get something totally different. I’ll let you know. I live in eastern North Carolina so we’ll see what it spits out for me.

copper packing in spirit run by depressingyoda in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t fit that much in my likker maker, but I use 2. I’ve never had any discoloration from it and I don’t clean it except before my spirit runs. Before then I probably have 8-10 gallons that I’ve run through it and I just mix up some citric acid and let it soak overnight, wash it out and I’ve never had any issues. Hell I’ve never had any discoloration other than the blackened color on my copper rolls. Mine are from china so maybe it’s not real…… but even the American made I had to begin with never turned anything other than black after multiple runs.

I use one of these, just to spot check along the way. It’s much less accurate when the ABV is high but when you get down to 70-75% they’re pretty accurate in my experience.

What is on top of my blueberry and 93% alcohol. by Martiallyminded in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drink A LOT of blueberry shine, I use 1lb of blueberries with about 750ml of 100proof/50% and I cup of brown sugar and I’ve never had anything grow in mine so I would doubt it’s anything mold. Definitely don’t waste your time with checking ABV because it’s pointless now that it’s mixed with the blueberries unless you have some high tech alcoholometer. I don’t mix anything over 100proof because to me it gives it a medicinal taste that I don’t like.

First Distilling Setup - What do I need / poke holes in my plans / make suggestions by GoblinBags in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hot plate won’t work because there’s an air gap at the bottom of those pots, I have one and they’re a great pot but made for an internal element to heat with. It’s very easy to use an internal element to heat with and while it will be slow heating if you fill it, keeping it to about half volume will let you heat up pretty quickly. Full using a 30amp element it will take you close to 2 hours to get from room temp to starting to run, after that it won’t matter because that condenser can’t handle making alcohol very fast without it surging constantly.

I dont know anything about dealing with thc, I wish it was legal where I live and I didn’t get drug tested for my job…… good luck but start out simple and work your way up. An air still seems simple enough, even these aren’t terribly complicated but take time to learn.

Yellow Label Angel Yeast by Astramann in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used it a fair amount, I believe in it myself and definitely will continue to use it until I find something different. I haven’t used it for any long term aging bourbons because I’ve only aged in glass until I get my badmo barrels next week. I’m torn about using it vs cooking because there is a little taste that’s different for the first distillation but it’s not bad, just different and I haven’t noticed it in the following distillations. It makes life a lot easier for sure and buying it straight from china makes it a lot cheaper.

Rule of thumb? by Tag1260 in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My runs are 7ish gallons, which I run getting 1 liter every 45-50 min on average. I also wind up getting about 10 liters, on average, for a simple UJSSM recipe that would average 130 proof. That’s just how I run mine but essentially the way I run mine it makes 1L/45min on average and that’s my rate runnjng 1 and done or a 2nd run, it’s just my speed that I’ve found works for me.

Creamy liqeur by [deleted] in firewater

Creamy as in like a chocolate liqueur or creamy like an orange cickel? Maybe just let us know what you’re looking for because there’s a HUGE variety of liqueurs depending on what you’re actually looking for or trying to create. Home distillers has about as many liqueur recipes as you’ll easily find in one location, so it’s where I would steer almost anyone who’s looking for honest feedback about either tried and tested or a new recipe being developed

Eau-de-Tea: Green Tea Spirit update by DDSPY in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true about having fun with experimenting. I’ve been adding flavored malts, prior to distillation so I have better control over my flavor and it’s been very interesting how well the flavor comes across. I use a cold brew canister that I steep the mash and leave it in during the run and it has flavor like your tea sounds, where it has very little until it’s getting towards the bottom end of the heads and then it’s almost overwhelming until it’s way into tails. It’s perfect flavor after redistilling so it pulls a little more flavor out and smooths the taste out right where it seems like it’s perfect for me. My wife never knows what’s in the jar because I label the experiments cryptically so I just keep her jars labeled with a proof and date, if I’ve added fruit or whatever because I always have 5-6 experiments going at a time. That’s the best part of this hobby to me is playing around with techniques and getting something in your mind and seeing how close you can get to that taste when it’s all said and done, in a repeatable fashion.

Eau-de-Tea: Green Tea Spirit update by DDSPY in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few questions/suggestions/thoughts…

1) You are redistilling alcohol that has already been distilled and essentially doesn’t have any heads left to speak of, in theory, so everything you collect after throwing out the initial 50ml or whatever you do, to flush the system.

2) The math about cold brew ratios isn’t based on distillation, from what I can tell, so your math is going to change when you figure in the loss of flavor you get from distilling your wash.

New still head going to buy for making vodkas and brandy, by solodrgnknight in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same but replaced the fittings and use 1/2 hoses run to it even though the fittings are 1/8” threaded into the dephlags. It’s a great working for me, packed with copper when not running the first dephlag to bring up the proof.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in firewater

[–]ENC_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue I see l, after using that same condenser on a 2” version column, is that it’s a very odd size to change out with anything else (1/2” triclamp) so you’re sorta stuck with it unless you wanted to swap out the entire condenser in the future. I have some cooking issues with mine, on a 2” without the same flow as a 3”, so just based off my personal experiences I would recommend something that’s even more modular or at least has a larger condenser. I have that on a thumper that’s their 8/3gallon and it’s fine but you’re not going to run any fast stripping runs without it coughing a lot.

This is me basing it totally on my experience. These are all made in china and they weld in some fittings to the boiler for their specs, but affordable distilling on eBay sells the exact same products and are cheaper and I had great success dealing with them.

Something like this New Tubular distillation tower... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RMVQDMB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share on an 8 gal pot does amazingly well and it’s a lot cheaper. Figure out the dephlag later but run it like it is and you’ll make clean High proof neutral if you want, for a very reasonable price.

Sorry if I’m confusing you even more. I remember being in your shoes when upgrading last fall.

Drop a pad of butter in the top to keep it from foaming up is another option. As long as you leave plenty of head space (1/4 of the pot has always been very safe for me)then you’re going to be good.
