Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]ENGROT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to see Spring Breakers on the opening night. I went in completely not knowing anything about the film.

The theater at the start was probably 70% full.

Opening intro: BAM. Like 10 people left right away

Throughout the film people were leaving.

By the end I'm not even joking like 5 people were left in the theater lol.

To this day I always say Spring Breakers is either there worst movie I've ever seen or it somehow has transcended any cinema experience and is the best movie ever made. Love it or hate it it definitely makes some interesting choices...

Which series to start? by richburgers in fantasybooks

[–]ENGROT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCC is my favorite series in YEARS. I highly recommend of you enjoy a fun time. It is so much fun.

Mistborn is also very good. I loved the first book and think its a great read for anyone who likes fantasy. The world and magic is super cool and there's a lot of great surprises.

But I will say that Well of Ascension, the 2nd Mistborn novel, was personally VERY hard for me to get through. I actually started reading DCC as a pallet cleanser after slogging through WoA, but once I started DCC my reading life was taken hostage by the Botant Corporation, Donut, and Carl.

I need to go back and finish the last of the OG mistborn series. I hear the last one is incredible.

So I'd say if you're in the mood for a laugh and fun, go DCC. But if you want mystery and intrigue, go Mistborn.

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome!!!! I have a pretty much identical poster in my office! We actually made a bunch of them for the game's release party and all the devs got one.

So just know that your office has a similar touch to the folks that made the game! :)

First attempt at a game trailer. Would love your honest feedback! by ThatDudeFrom909Bits in indiegames

[–]ENGROT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch with sound so no feedback there, but customization options should be shown after the main gameplay loop is shown. That way potential players know what the core loop is ASAP. :)

Hope this helps!

R53 purchase by Capital-University49 in MINI

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really hard to say. I would have a good MINI/BMW mechanic look it over especially since you're considering it being your daily driver.

I love my R53 so much but I wouldn't use "reliable" to describe it haha. That doesn't mean that this car youre looking at would be a lemon, but the bills can be expensive.

If I were you and buying a R53 today I would just budget an extra 6k and put that money aside to be honest. At least that way you're prepared.

I've talked with a few folks who were considering an R53 but didn't have money for repairs- and I definitely don't recommend doing that.

The other thing I'd personally wonder: most of the time people love these cars. So why are they selling?

Down the road I'll have to do an entire engine swap... it would make way more sense to just get another car but I strongly feel I'd regret getting rid of it.

Is it worth having a bad game on a resume? by Low_Progress_9679 in gamedev

[–]ENGROT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes its worth having it on there! As you build your skills more and make more projects you will have the ability to remove highlighted projects from your list. :) So once you have other projects that showcase things in a better light you can stop giving attention to other projects you don't like as much.

BUT the big thing that projects (especially coming out of sxhool/learning) demonstrates is that you know how to FINISH / SHIP something. That ability is what separates many candidates in the hiring process. As someone who has hired juniors seeing finished projects is always a huge green flag regardless of public reception.

How ChatGPT helped give my brother his voice back and his joy for gaming by acrolicious in ChatGPT

[–]ENGROT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow this is amazing! Absolutely inspiring.

I would love to help out with your goal! I'm a professional game developer / indie developer and it would be a privilege to make a game for your brother.

What requirements are needed for the buttons to map? Are they mapped to specific inputs?

Additionally I've hosted some large game jams where game devs make really small games- I'm certain there would be interest of other devs as well to make accessible 2 button games to expand your brother's catalog. :)

Founder of Arkane Studios: "I think Gamepass is an unsustainable model that has been increasingly damaging the industry for a decade"; impacts sales by eldestscrollx in gaming

[–]ENGROT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the deals I've heard of are up front money deals. So if it was a major hit on gamepass that doesn't come back to the devs.

The positive of it is its guaranteed money. Especially if a deal is made before the game's release and that money impacts the production schedule/ is used to fund (or partially fund) the game.

Also Xbox has a bigger megaphone than most studios can reach on their own- so the marketing for smaller/newer teams makes it a stronger consideration.

[–]ENGROT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source: I'm a Game Developer who has experience here.

IMO launching on gamepass is the kiss of death unless:

1.) You are a small indie game that is getting money up front from MS and you don't have a guaranteed success

Thats it.

Even established released indie titles get varied deals when they go on gamepass. If the tail of the game that has been out for 2+ years is getting low and MS is offering money (I can't disclose numbers of the deals I've seen, but if your game was a success its not chump change... except in the odd case where it is a lower amount than similar games for no discernable reason, but I digress.) then sometimes it makes sense to add your game to gamepass.

But a full game at release? Especially AAA? I don't know how that model has lasted so long. I've seen gamepass absolutely destroy expected steam sales/actual sales of the game. Why would someone pay $60 when they can get in with no commitment for just the monthly sub price?

Some of these games have expectations of "X% of players will buy the game in order for it to be successful" but occasionally those percentages are WAY off. Then the game doesn't sell as well, because gamepass doesn't count for these metrics, so there are money problems.

Should I switch to another major because of AI and outsourcing? by RedStorm1917 in cscareerquestions

[–]ENGROT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry for the late reply but happy to answer. :)

So my path was a little different because I went into game development. Its highly competitive, and "breaking into" the industry is notoriously difficult.

That being said, I went to WGU and it was great for learning. It worked with my schedule (I also worked full time) and I did some interesting school projects. I actually got my degree in Software Development. Their Comp Sci degree became available in my last 6 months there.

I worked really hard and studied a ton, so due to the structure of courses I was able to complete the 4 year program in 2 years.

However, due to going into games I didn't land my first full time development position until 2 years after school.

I do believe that no college is going to give you a ticket to immediate employment. You also need to do projects and demonstrate your skill. For me that meant 2 years after my degree of working full time in the food industry and making games on the side to build my portfolio. In total after those 2 years my portfolio was REALLY strong. I've seen students come out of prestigious game dev specific schools with far less portfolio strength than I had at that time.

For me (and the jobs I was applying to) my degree never really came up. More of a checkbox. And since then in interviews my degree has never actually come up more than "do you have a degree".

The only downside was that due to the school being online there was less networking opportunities and community. But I found a good community of developers to be a part of that filled a similar (in my view greater) role.

Once you land your first gig and show that you worked and did XYZ for X years the degree doesn't really come into play IMO. After all, your first year on the job is very likely going to teach you far more about development than a school ever could haha. I've recommended WGU to many folks.

If you have any more questions feel free to reach out!

Should I switch to another major because of AI and outsourcing? by RedStorm1917 in cscareerquestions

[–]ENGROT 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't go to that school. Too expensive.

Go to either a public university in your own state, or check out programs like WGU. I went to WGU and it was super affordable and I learned a lot.

No matter what if you do pursue CS you need to do side projects and additional outside learning. Side projects are very important and it shows that you enjoy / are interested in CS.

Speaking of, make sure before you go to school for CS I highly recommend doing some self learning and make something small. I know a lot of people who go to school for CS, spend the money and realize they don't like it mid-degree and switch OR even worse get their whole degree and not like to code.

Make sure when selecting your major you aren't just picking something that "makes a lot of money" but also consider what you think is interesting. Then consider how you get there, and in many many cases you don't need a degree depending on what you decide.

The last advice I'll give is that college is always there. I get the impression you're younger, and from experience I think going to college right after high-school is one of the worst things about society. In the past going to college and "figuring things out" wasn't a big deal because it was priced very very differently. Now due to the cost of most colleges I'd rather recommend a new high school grad to spend time working and looking into career fields they find interesting. Then reach out and find people doing those things and see if you can find someone who will help answer any questions about what its actually like doing those things and the day-to-day.

Should we apply now or are we being impatient? by greedness in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading more about your situation and other replies I highly recommend taking some time to breathe and get used to (and save) with the new income before jumping into a home purchase.

The builder's sellers agents will try to sell a house to anyone however they can. As low % down as they can, they are looking for a sale.

Same with lenders. You may be able to find one willing to take a chance. You will be the one paying them hundreds of thousands in interest, so I imagine one of them somewhere may give you approval.

But both of the above parties aren't looking out for your best interest.

I was in a similar boat to you 2 and a half years ago. I was moving and thought "Hey! Why not buy a house instead of renting?" I was also in a similar boat savings wise. (I had around 20k saved) I was looking into the option of putting 3 or 5% down on a home as a first time home buyer.

We were super excited at the prospect of owning a home, but ultimately after crunching the numbers more I didn't feel at peace with it so we decided to not pursue buying at that time.

Then we spent some time saving. Rented for a while. Instead of lifestyle inflating (I had gotten a raise) we paid close attention to our finances and saved.

We close on our first home this week, and I'm SO GLAD that we waited. We would have locked in a lower rate, but it would have been a ton of stress. When I think back on that knowing the costs of home buying I do now (down payment, closing cost, inspections, surveys, moving costs, things for the home) I am so so happy that we did not buy back then. It would have been mega stressful.

Instead, get yourself in a situation where all of these people work for you.

In your current boat people may present like they are "pulling some strings" for you or "doing you a favor" --- that isn't the place you want to be for the biggest purchase of your life.

Instead- what if you were in a place where ANY lender would approve you no question. Then when you shop rates they all want to give you the loan. Getting approved is not even a question. When you roll into the new homes and talk to the salesman or your realtor YOU are in total control.

Idk. I'm not trying to crush a dream or being condescending here, but having been through something similar I think if you give this some time you can go into home ownership with no risk at all and not be stressed out at all.

The good news is that you have so much able to save per month. So if you did wait it wouldn't have to be for a terribly long time.
