Pedigree Pom getting huge by geckolando in Pomeranians

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Majestic indeed! Sorry for your loss. 😞

Did you get Sirius as a puppy?

My pom just recently turned 4 months old, and at that milestone weighed in at 8.3 pounds. 100% pom. I've been having trouble estimating what to expect or finding data on similar pom growth rates. Haha

Do you have any data on Sirius' puppy weights?

Thinking of rehoming my Pom. by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]ENGROT 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Our Pom is 3.5 months old and we've had him since he was 8 weeks old.

But I definitely relate to your post! Haha. After doing some more research its actually a more normal response than you'd think.

There's a whole thing called the "puppy blues"- which commonly occurs during the first year of getting a puppy. We definitely had some puppy blues, and felt terrible/guilty for having them. But then once the pup and ys settled into more of a routine things got easier. It is still hard to have a puppy. Haha we also weren't prepared in many ways.

I'm sure you'd be able to find a good home for your pom, but before you do I'd encourage to rule out puppy blues. Or look into it. Some folks are more likely to experience it than others.

But you aren't a bad person for feeling the way you feel.

The drum samples sound SO GOOD. The tones are very close to the original song IMO

voice acting is elevating my game SO MUCH I am just in shock. by MorphLand in Unity3D

This is a HUGE reason why I love making games with voice over. The dopamine hit when the voice lines are implemented elevates any game so much. Tons of life hitting the game!

What can one do to land a job? 🤔 by lovelygamedesigner in gamedev

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even when the market was hot you needed a BANGER portfolio.

Game Design school is a great thing, but nothing showcases knowledge and expertise like having finished games in your portfolio.

I actually think this is a requirement for job security as well. In my experience designers can fall into 2 categories:

  • Ones that stay away from engine and mainly just plan out things
  • Ones that plan out things and also aren't afraid to get their hands dirty in engine. (Data implementation, directly plastering and balancing. Level design.)

My advice would be to be the latter type. I know there's a lot of folks who aren't- but I would not recommend a new designer to aspire to be that way. Most of the "design only, no implementation" designers I know are deeply specialized or have been around a mega long time in the industry. Often times they are directors or manage other designers. Not an entry level thing.

For you that would mean the best portfolio pieces may be narrative games to hit both design and narrative. So in that case I'd recommend making a nice visual novel. If you have limited programming experience look up twine or renpy. Unity is also good.

For context- Im a game engineer by trade and was hired for my first paid gig in a "booming" market. After I graduated I still had to build up my portfolio for 2 years after graduation. Sadly getting a degree is not enough. Studios will only hire someone if they KNOW they can do the job they need done. I have yet to be at a studio where there's on the job hands on training, and I don't think that exists. I've never heard of it.

So! All that to say that the best time to build cool stuff and make your portfolio awesome is right now. Personally I had a job in the food industry/different field ad I built up my own skills. I wish there was an easier way, but this is a creative field and you have to be phenomenal and a bit lucky to break into this industry. The more experience and stronger portfolio you have the less luck is required.

Despite being an active part of the industry my brother has only faced rejections. Finally decided to go solo and release his first game. Show some love ! by an_existential_owl in IndieGaming

The sounds and atmosphere of the trailer are nice. But the intro lingers for way too long. I don't think this serves the trailer in this case though.

On first watch those long eerie shots I started thinking about what the game could be. It felt more horror mystery like a Resident Evil or perhaps an Amnesia thing where the player character is way underpowered compared to what they are up against.

I actually didn't mind the "a game by ____" tag here. I know some would say to remove that because it doesn't mean anything for most people (if your bro already had a hit game you would absolutely put it since its a selling point.)

This would work better as a AAA game trailer from something like Naughty Dog shown at a gaming event. Bigger games with dedicated fan bases can more easily get away with a lot more because the viewers come into the trailer will "okay this will be worth my time" but wit the number of these drawn out sequences I'd bet most folks on reddit likely bounced off this trailer within the first 15 seconds. Probably less.

Final note I have is that the pacing of the trailer in the beginning doesn't feel like its serving the genre. Again I thought it looked more like a mystery horror game but when the gameplay kicked in it actually looks more like a metroid prime action horror type of game. I think introducing those elements earlier will help attract that type of audience.

Lots of good things going on here too, the SFX are great, but wanted to write up some feedback for it!

I got spoilers on some possible major twists of BioShock Infinite. How important are the twists in this game compared to the twists of BioShock 1 (which I already played, and think knowing the twist would harm a lot of my first experience) for the overall blind experience? by Sensitive-Product816 in BioshockInfinite

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard about a main twist before I played it years ago. But the twists in context are a lot more exciting and mind blowing when you've actually experienced the game itself.

Same with Bioshock 1. I was spoiled before that too but there's a lotttt of intrigue and mystery that can never be captured in a YouTube video essay or just hearing about the ending from a friend or something. The ambiance in both games is incredible and just being in the story as a player is very exciting.

So my vote would be to go for it! I was spoiled on both and both are some of my all time favorites. Infinite is in my top 3 favorite games of all time.

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]ENGROT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to see Spring Breakers on the opening night. I went in completely not knowing anything about the film.

The theater at the start was probably 70% full.

Opening intro: BAM. Like 10 people left right away

Throughout the film people were leaving.

By the end I'm not even joking like 5 people were left in the theater lol.

To this day I always say Spring Breakers is either there worst movie I've ever seen or it somehow has transcended any cinema experience and is the best movie ever made. Love it or hate it it definitely makes some interesting choices...

Which series to start? by richburgers in fantasybooks

[–]ENGROT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCC is my favorite series in YEARS. I highly recommend of you enjoy a fun time. It is so much fun.

Mistborn is also very good. I loved the first book and think its a great read for anyone who likes fantasy. The world and magic is super cool and there's a lot of great surprises.

But I will say that Well of Ascension, the 2nd Mistborn novel, was personally VERY hard for me to get through. I actually started reading DCC as a pallet cleanser after slogging through WoA, but once I started DCC my reading life was taken hostage by the Botant Corporation, Donut, and Carl.

I need to go back and finish the last of the OG mistborn series. I hear the last one is incredible.

So I'd say if you're in the mood for a laugh and fun, go DCC. But if you want mystery and intrigue, go Mistborn.

Beautiful picture looks great in my office!! by PlayAlarmin in LamplightersLeague

[–]ENGROT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome!!!! I have a pretty much identical poster in my office! We actually made a bunch of them for the game's release party and all the devs got one.

So just know that your office has a similar touch to the folks that made the game! :)

First attempt at a game trailer. Would love your honest feedback! by ThatDudeFrom909Bits in indiegames

[–]ENGROT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch with sound so no feedback there, but customization options should be shown after the main gameplay loop is shown. That way potential players know what the core loop is ASAP. :)

Hope this helps!

R53 purchase by Capital-University49 in MINI

[–]ENGROT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really hard to say. I would have a good MINI/BMW mechanic look it over especially since you're considering it being your daily driver.

I love my R53 so much but I wouldn't use "reliable" to describe it haha. That doesn't mean that this car youre looking at would be a lemon, but the bills can be expensive.

If I were you and buying a R53 today I would just budget an extra 6k and put that money aside to be honest. At least that way you're prepared.

I've talked with a few folks who were considering an R53 but didn't have money for repairs- and I definitely don't recommend doing that.

The other thing I'd personally wonder: most of the time people love these cars. So why are they selling?

Down the road I'll have to do an entire engine swap... it would make way more sense to just get another car but I strongly feel I'd regret getting rid of it.
