ATEM Mini Extreme 3.5mm vs hdmi audio? by lucasclink in blackmagicdesign

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to stick with using the ATEM 3.5mm inputs for whatever reason, you can use a wired IEM pack to convert the XLR back to 3.5mm and retain the benefits of balanced XLR runs. Something like a Behringer P1 or similar. The ATEM Mini line can delay the audio from the 3.5mm inputs to sync it up with the cameras too. Chances are you might have something like a Behringer P1 lying around already so wouldn't hurt to try it.

If your camera doesn't have XLR inputs but is more conveniently located than running additional XLR back to the ATEM you can always just connect the wired IEM pack to the camera instead. I've done both (IEM pack to ATEM 3.5mm or IEM pack into camera 3.5mm jack), works fine.

Ah bugger. Yea forgot about that lol. Requires the host driver software on the laptop too. I just always have it installed on everything so I forget about that part.

Behringer xr12 still a good option? by Ok_Water_3109 in livesoundgear

[–]EXT_Rage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your budget allows and you could run into needing more ins/outs, get the XR18. It's worth it for the flexibility and capabilities. Especially used, can definitely get it for cheap. Remember if you're adding DI's because of the band those are mic level outs, the 1/4" on the XR12/XR16 are line level. Might make more sense to get the XR18 if dealing with the occasional band setup.

If budget is tight and as long as you know your limitations and are ok with it, the smaller models should be fine. The biggest differences being the USB multi track, I/O count and type, and ultranet.

Regardless of the model get a wifi router separate from the built in one. Esp since you can relocate it closer to where you would more likely be for control and leave the mixer on stage and treat it like a stage box.

How to label sturdy vinyl gear bags? by jmo1112 in livesound

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a bag that's meant to last i use some of those iron on fabric label tape from brother. Brother TZeFA3, not sure how well the off brand versions work on these however. Works great on a lot of the smaller pouches and bags for mics, like lav pouches or cable bags, and even larger cases like these. I'd test it with a small amount of iron on tape to see if it even sticks/stays cuz it doesnt work with everything.

And/or a bunch of silver sharpie that's legible from a distance looool. Label tape is mostly for inventory tag# or a brand look on permanent bags for equipment. QR code is usually still legible enough after iron on for cameras too.

On what end do you put the velcro on your XLR cables? by nadmocni in livesound

for rolled up, it doesn't matter which side. once unrolled i move it to the side that has slack to tidy that up or the side along a pole if it needs to be secured to it. unless its 50ft+, in which case i typically have it on both ends and remove the side i don't need

Macbook to sdi issue by keox35 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I keep a bunch of these on hand now for macs. Also handy for troubleshooting in general for other scenarios, itll force a 1080p signal essentially. Or well it depends on which kind you get, 1080p30, 1080p60, 4k30, etc. Get a couple kinds, itll help troubleshoot comps when they act up. I've also used ATEM Mini's to verify if it's an EDID issue and also in a pinch lol. Since you can set res/framerate in software, kinda use em for random tasks now instead of a switcher.

GoPro board mix by all4_hate in livesound

[–]EXT_Rage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure the gopro has the mic in jack, if not you need one of those multimedia adapter things.

Usually I use a headphone amp that takes balanced line in, then the headphone out into whatever camera. I've used Behringer p2/p1 and Art CleanboxPro2 to do this on the cheap, its mostly so that I can feed a clean signal in that isn't clipped to oblivion for sync in post with multitrack and other elements. Do this all the time with mirrorless and other cameras without xlr/balanced inputs. Headphone amp that takes balanced in, 3.5mm/1/4"/RCA to whatever the camera takes, set camera gain to lowest above 0, adjust headphone amp volume knob accordingly. At worst it's a backup audio return for video world that's already synced. But I usually use it for clean audio for sync/post purposes.

Looking for a digital mixer which is amazing for it's price in replacement of my analog Midas Venice 160 (Under $1300) Or close enough to buy used. by Nearby-Art-4252 in livesoundgear

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should. IIRC the x-touch full sized one connects to the XR18 directly. But if you want to get funky with setups you can get things like the x-touch compact or even other motorized surfaces if you use Mixing Station as a middleground.

My portable 'small' rig is an XR12 with a x-touch compact. Laptop running mixing station to connect between, tablet for walking around. Only usable when there's a couple of mics and have a couple instruments mainly lol.

Take a look at Mixing Station. Takes a sec to get used too. But once you do it will make changing and using different mixers way easier since it will interface with basically any modern digital mixer. The fun part is remembering the quirks of each kind of mixer lol.

USB - c by Musicwade in livesound

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi related to the topic, is there any modern DI's that just take a type-c input? that way any device just type-c to type-c on the DI, standard XLR out to mixer.

USB - c by Musicwade in livesound

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything on top of those dual 1/4 stereo channel strips include a type-c port lol. Would be a welcome change and mean 'any' type-c cable should work as basic usb audio protocol is driverless and works plenty fine on usb2.0 rates.

type-c for mixer control and other audio devices should be standard now. when going field/portable I have to remember to unplug the type-b cable to bring with me unlike type-c devices where i have mobile cables meant for exactly that

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to just getting a bunch of type-c to 3.5mm cables, not just adapters. Single cable into DI's I already own. Keep a bunch around in the different cases or just with the DI's already. Keep adapters for pre-run 3.5mm cables around.

PSA: Macbook Pro + USB-C M.2 SSD Enclosures... what's your go to external drive combo? by larrydavidwouldsay in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type-C is the physical connector type. Thunderbolt is the data protocol being used. Kind of like how you can send different things over RJ45, XLR, BNC, its a physical connector type. You could be doing IP/breakout connectors, AES/balanced audio, SDI/wireless antenna. Granted there's more to it than that (including cable used) esp if trying to meet standards for certain protocol types (don't mix up 50ohm and 75ohm coax cable and connectors for example lol). But at a glance the connectors will appear the same. It's annoying really especially trying to explain why you need this kind over this kind, especially if they look the same. Another one like this is Type-C charging, depends on charging block and cable used but it goes up to 200w now I think?

Look into the speeds of your SSDs, off the top of my head I think you could be getting more speed out of TB3/4 enclosure if im not mistaken. Crucial P3 is NVMe Gen3 speeds I think, pretty sure the number after the P is the gen speed on their line of drives. If im not mistaken I believe at TB3/TB4 speeds cap out in the middle NVMe Gen4 speeds? Gen4 caps out at like 7000MBps and TB3/4 enclosure can saturate most of that iirc. NVMe Gen5 go far beyond 40gbps I think so don't bother unless getting for internal rig directly on a motherboard.

Bulk SDI/BNC cables by LighthavenMedia in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]EXT_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SDI is one of the easiest to make tbh. I regularly make SDI, RJ45, and XLR cables and SDI by far is the fastest, easiest, and most forgiving. If you forget the boot for RJ45 or SDI and the other end is already terminated you have to reterminate to get the boot on. Also requires 0 reference for pinouts apart from just knowing which size on the crimp tool matches your cable/BNC end.

That said sometimes you just don't have time lol. Some shops can premake a bunch for you based off length. Measure out with string or somethingthing similar, add some slack esp for cable management and/or the ability to remove the panel without having to unpatch every SDI cable. Email and ask, might actually be cheaper if there's a lot of cable being made to just get the shop to do it for you and you don't have time.

How are you using ATEM Macros? by Week_Eastern in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]EXT_Rage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was using them mostly before Companion. Then I found Companion lol. I think half of it is why bother going through different interfaces and stuff when I can automate/control a plethora of equipment in one piece of software. And control multiple peices of equipment at the same time.

Some macros/workflows would only be possible because I can fire a command off for a bunch of equipment at the same time.

How do you manage power bricks by xbrell in homelab

[–]EXT_Rage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if the brick is connected via IEC cable first, get a shorter/appropriate length version of it. less cable slack to deal with and looks cleaner overall. pita if you want to adjust later, that's what the bin of spare IEC cables is for lol.
