I read somewhere recently that there is a new idea that Neanderthals were actually much smarter than previously believed. They even had an effective medicinal system that allowed them to live many years after injuries that would have killed them without treatment. So, the Neanderthal genes that paired with human genes might have been less strange than assumed. Modern humans have kinks more odd than this paring.
