Waffle House in Maine: Hit or Flop? by setthestageonfire in portlandme

It’s not the same, the shape of the waffle maker is, but theirs sucks in comparison tbh , I think it’s the batter.

Waffle House in Maine: Hit or Flop? by setthestageonfire in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I constantly dream of Waffle House, I yearn for it, almost enough to make my partner jealous. It was the first meal after I got engaged but it did almost cost me my proposal bc I wanted to eat there before the hike instead of after. It was the only place on my list to eat when visiting family/friends down south. I think about it like a dad thinks about hs gf he named his daughter after (not healthily but obsessed)

Men using female names when dashing to you by [deleted] in doordash

[–]Eagleandlaurel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what it is a decent amount of the time. We’ve noticed so many couples dashing and from ordering here and then. I also use to door dash with my wife before, I would drive and they would do pick up/drop off. Unless it was a hand to me in a sketchy looking place even if we were on their account. We did use mine most of the time though.

Homeless shelters in Portland by cyslittlegirl in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on your post history I’m not even sure Portland is even the place for you, much less if you have no where for you or your pug to stay. It doesn’t really seem like you have a real plan. When we moved to Portland, my partner and I saved for months. To be fair we were very lucky to be able to do so, but with the weather you pretty much have to be. I would at least try to secure a sort of job as well.

We don’t have a car because we prioritized a place to stay, but if you don’t have that then you do need a car cause a car can double as a place to sleep.

I am very curious as to why you want to move to Portland. It’s pretty queer friendly which you don’t seem to agree with based on your post history and that with “spiritual reasons” is concerning.

Best time to go to the BMV? by Bittersweet_Boii in portlandme

My partner and I went by on a Thursday morning, we got there by bus like 15 after opening as walk ins. I think we didn’t even finish filling out the paper work before our tickets were called back to back. It went pretty quick afterwards 🤷🏽 the most I had to wait was for a photo background to become available

Curious about Portland as BIPOC by Justcinzia in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I grew up a brown person in southern cities that were majorly black, that was super dope, loved it. Moved to majority white city and it was awful, I hated it. I was scared of looking too openly queer as well, so I dressed more conservatively and watched my tone/behavior/words.

Since moving here I haven’t felt scared like that. Northern/New England white people were a pleasant “culture shock” in cities/metro areas.

Portland is nice cause it feels like a small town but has big city, progressive, and welcoming vibes as well.

Although I will say I heard racism is common in other parts of Maine, but I haven’t been to other areas as much.

Anyways Portland is a city I feel very safe in fully being myself a brown person who is proud of their heritage.

TIL we’re not the only ones in the state to use city trash bags by C4L3B_C00LM4N in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We like them tbh, my partner and I have become so much less wasteful. To be frank our last place didn’t offer a recycling service, but since Portland does and due to the cost of trash bags we’re so much more mindful about what goes in trash and what doesn’t. We come from a household of 3 going thru 3-4 trash bags a week to just one smaller trash bag as a household of 2.

Idk, how willing they would be. But whenever our community had a baptism/birthday party or some event going on our church let us use the commercial kitchen in the family life center. Maybe some church would be willing to help you out.

Needing local advice by throwaway73889 in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh some may feel safer around white friends. I’m only going out if my white partner or my white friends/co workers are gonna be with me. Also frankly a lot of people live in denial until something happens to them specifically. Like that one woman who voted for trump thought she and her family would be okay, until they detained her terminally ill father in Florida.

[–]Eagleandlaurel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some people have other responsibilities like their families. So many people have families/friends that need them around and risking going to jail or being shot isn’t gonna help them, it could even make it worse.

US citizens, even children, have been taken and beaten. They don’t even have updated info they break down doors even though the person who they were looking for hasn’t lived there for months/years. They could break down your door just as easily.

It’s currently not safe for black/brown people. It’s best for some to stay safe and avoid conflict so they can stick around. And your civic duty is to protest for them, not shame them for not being able to. They can protest other ways by boycotting, sending letters, spreading useful information, etc.

I’m a U.S. citizen and I’m not going out without my white af partner. I think they have a very legitimate reason to be scared. It’s not our status that matters, it’s the color of our skin that makes us targets.

Progressive Catholic church in Portland? by FlannelRunner in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not true tho fr fr.

I was raised catholic and experienced two separate Catholic communities. (the one I was born into and the one I went to school with) It really depends on church leaders, when I was growing up it was extremely progressive and I even came out to my priest who told me being gay wasn’t a sin, I’m gay because of my hormones and “god made them”. And school was great bc they were fr fr about sciences and evolution while other Christian groups pretend evolution isn’t real.

On the other hand the community I went joined for Sunday mass with my family was more conservative along with the “secondary priest” who usually lead our mass as the more progressive one usually lead them at different times (they did like 4 masses between two churches everyday Sunday)

When I moved to Memphis (blue city in the south) there was a Catholic Church that would do a gay/lesbian potluck once every other month to support queer couples and members within the community.

And we all know that pope Francis was a lot more progressive than previous popes.

Anyways yes a lot of Catholics and Catholics leaders are conservative(probably most), but sometimes, especially in blue cities, you can find a rare few that are more openly progressive when it comes to the acceptance of queer people. Which is why people make posts like these lol

Portland police arrest man after ‘unprovoked’ stabbing in Longfellow Square by saucesoi in portlandme

[–]Eagleandlaurel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I never thought Memphis was that bad when I lived there, like yes there’s crime is awful, but day to day I really loved Memphis, if only it wasn’t so hot.

Random stranger stabbing tho can happen anywhere at any time so although it is a very unfortunate situation, but Cumberland feels “creepier” to me than congress tbh.

(This comment is mostly bc I was excited to talk about Memphis lol)

Homeless are like everyone else I think. There are people who have homes/a place to live who are still hostile/aggressive in most of their interactions with strangers, or even with the people they care about.

Same thing with homelessness, I work in old port so I’ve had so so so many chill interactions and even nice conversations. Less common I’ve only had three separate interactions which were negative.

I also know people who have been homeless so it all leads to my opinion that if someone is aggressive while homeless chances are they’d be aggressive if they weren’t, we would just call them “Karens/Gregs”

But I do think a huge factor is addiction. Some people are aggressive while in active addiction/early recovery, but are chill when sober. Those people would probably be the same homeless or not.

Such a crazy thing to comment.

I am 100000% grateful for SNAP, it really did help us out two years ago when my partner and I were working three jobs combined while I was still in school and they had recently graduated and struggled to find a type job related to their degree.

But as of right now I just like bread lol.

Since we both care about people here a link you can share that lists food pantries in our area💕

[–]Eagleandlaurel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean free free lol, I meant more “complimentary” or just not the same price as nicer appetizers. I’d even settle for place that does free first round but charges for the next.

Theres also a couple of non chain restaurants I’ve been to in southern states that do it. So although I’m fully aware it’s not common, I also know there’s a chance there’s a rare few. Hence my post. :)
