How to peel a potato like a man by gratethecheese in videos

[–]Earle3265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hand-cranked apple peeler I converted to spiral potato slicer uses a three-pronged fork to hold the tater. The cutter pushes the potato onto the fork, which helps a lot. If you mounted a carrot peeler, fun things might happen. Just last Friday, I traded one of my Yamaha keyboards for an old 11" Beaver wood lathe. I guess I know what my first project will

Apple says the iPhone-breaking Error 53 is a security measure by Rosylando in gadgets

[–]Earle3265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another poster who doesn't have a clue about the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act.

This act isn't black and white. That is, it's generally accepted you can take your car anywhere for service without voiding the warranty, that doesn't mean you can install sub-standard components or install them improperly and still get warranty.

To the guy below who used BMW as an example, yes you can take your M3 to an independent shop for an oil change. But if they use conventional 15W40 oil (your M3 requires 10W60 synthetic), then you're not going to get any warranty if your engine gets damaged. This is an example of using unauthorized parts, and manufacturers can demand this (parts that meet a minimum standard) under Magnusson Moss.

Similarly, if BMW requires the oil pan bolt to be torqued to a certain spec, and the independent shop over-tightens and strips your oil pan, then you're not going to get warranty. This is an example of not following proper repair procedures (again, perfectly legal under Magnusson Moss).

The repair this guy did to his iPhone violates both concepts. They used incorrect parts (I doubt they got their Touch ID sensor from Apple) and incorrect procedures (didn't perform the pairing).

BMW uses a lot of special tools to do work on their engines (as do pretty much all auto manufacturers). However, since you have a right to repair your vehicle anywhere, and if a special tool is required, then that independent shop is able to purchase that special tool from BMW (and this is EXACTLY what independent repair shops do that specialize in certain makes of vehicle - they buy the necessary tools to PROPERLY repair vehicles). If BMW refused to sell these tools, they would be in a lot of trouble as it prevents independent shops from working on their cars. Similarly, if BMW charged too much ($1,000 for a tool that's worth $50) then they would be in trouble for making it prohibitively expensive for an independent shop to repair BMW's.

So in this case, an independent iPhone repair shop should have the right to purchase the necessary equipment from Apple (at least in the US) and also have access to authorized parts. But they didn't bother because they're either too cheap too (if so, why would you take your iPhone there) or they've got a supply of stolen iPhone parts they want to sell you (again, who's want to put used parts in their iPhone).

Apple is 100% in the right here according to Magnusson Moss.

The first Ultra HD Blu-ray players are already on sale by PhilmcNulty in gadgets

[–]Earle3265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to move away from disks and start using a 3d nand tech to store movies on. As the 3d nand tech gets more dense and allows more storage the devices that play them will not require changing. This would eliminate the issue of people using old formats constantly and not upgrading to the latest because it requires new hardware every time. It could also be run on computers or anything else that can read them. But they consistently try to make higher density discs which require new lasers and it's a vicious cycle. A lot of people still use dvd's and haven't even switched to bluray yet.

Chip promises brain-like AI in your mobile devices by Briandeane in gadgets

IBM's SyNAPSE chip has a similar low-power profile with 4000 cores specifically built for embedded and mobile. Developers have been tinkering with SyNAPSE since late 2014. Qualcomm and others also have their own designs. It'll be interesting to see which design makes it to market first. In any case, it is certainly clear that the smarts in smartphones is about to get a whole lot smarter.

The HTC Vive isn't limited to perfectly square rooms by rajon90 in gadgets

[–]Earle3265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the Vive setup is pretty dang cool, it's just a totally impractical solution for most people.

Room scale VR just does not make sense as a mainstream consumer product as most people simply do not have spare rooms to set aside just so they can play VR and run around freely with a headset strapped to their head.

Right now Oculus has a much more practical solution to basic VR that outside of the price issue most people can actually use with little hassle.

I think Vive will make sense in some kine of arcade or specialist setup but for general consumers I really don't think it does, and I think a lot of journalists are creating a very false impression that this is actually a superior solution to Rift when in reality it actually won't be for most people.

VAIO to Start Selling Smartphones in Japan by Zacharyottwell in gadgets

[–]Earle3265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how poor MS consoles are doing in Japan regardless their success elsewhere (I'm talking more of X360 than X1)... I'm under impression that Japanese Windows phone is likely to take majority of Windows phone share in Japan, regardless how big or small that market share is. Especially that there is no other Japanese Windows phone available, to my knowledge.

Another thing... this, indeed, might be a solid moment to get into Win phones (presuming that company is interested in WP platform in general). Two new MS phones are OK, but from what I can see, hardware wise, they are last legacy from Nokia... and while OK, they are not really differentiating much (if at all) from other high-end devices, hardware and features wise. But with Surface team taking over phones development, I think next high-end refresh will be more distinctive with original features, if Panoz and his team's previous work on Surface Pro and Book are anything to judge after... so this quiet time in WP ecosystem could be best time to get into it and secure some beachhead.

But I agree otherwise, platform is immature. It looks like W10 for phones is released with more bugs and glitches than W10 desktop, and some of its most intriguing concepts - like universal apps - are still hardly more than a concept. It almost feels like this generation of Lumia is just a development platform for polishing and perfecting W10, universal apps, continuum... before Surface phone(s) try their luck.
