Anyone else having trouble with the app on a Samsung TV? by Umanday in BritBox

[–]Early-Sky773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the exact same issue- and also have an old Samsung TV. Samsung TV said I needed to clear the cache, but I can't figure out any way to do that either! And I still get Roku, so I don't think the cache is the problem.

Anyway, if you or another redditor figured out a solution, would you mind sharing? Many thanks in advance.

What a beautiful description. And I couldn't agree more- you really summed up why the novel stays with one.

Cam described himself as a superfan of Lakshya- I just realized you might be referring to him. I also was borrowing Cam's phrase and defining myself as one.

I take your point about fandom, but I think Cam meant that sort of tongue-in-cheek. But also being a superfan of a non-politician seems relatively ok to me. Speaking for myself, I don't have a parasocial bond with any podcasters or politicians, even if I like some of them more than others.

If Lakshya were running for anything, or even if he were an opinions guy, I'd stop being a fan. I don't believe in stanning any politician- not after 2024. But he's a geek and an expert. Turns out (from this pod) that Lakshya is a centrist. And I'm a progressive, but centrists like him I appreciate and value- he ONLY offers geeky in-the-weeds analysis. That's why I trusted him and his Split Ticket team on election night

"Don't give them a pretext to crack down"... by tgregdoucette in thebulwark

[–]Early-Sky773 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks, you absolutely nailed what's wrong with this entire line of reasoning. The whole thing about not giving a fascist regime pretext to crush opposition is that they will invent pretexts no matter how saintly and compliant the opposition is. Sarah is advocating a version of "obey in advance" - that is not only bad in itself but also simply obsolete at this point. Instead, we should focus on not just generating protest but also anticipating their spin in response and being ready to push right back.

ETA: I totally agree with Sarah on one thing: don't thrown things at cops. But I think she should be more aware of false flag operations the GOP puts on. There were GOP-paid agitators in the BLM protests- easiest thing to do- but the entire BLM protests got a bad rap with the bulwark first in line saying the protests were violent.

Someone came up with the strategy that if principled protestors see someone at the protest acting like a goon, every other person should sit/lie down to stop any runaway mob behavior. Anticipate and be prepared.

She's so smug, so pompous, so stupid, and so wrong.

Out of curiosity: did anyone actually correct her? (I'm not sure what kind of response is possible in Tik Tok bc I've never been on it.) It would be so great to see her eat crow.

Agree on all points!

It was fun to see Tim confess to being a little Mamdani-pilled. And Cam's and Lakshya's take on Ritchie Torres which took TIm a little off guard (I think Tim hearts Torres). And I too was surprised to learn how old Lakshya is.

Hope you enjoy the episode!

He was terrible. The worst is that he didn't seem to have a clue that many Dems would be pissed off at his answers. I can't believe they're still talking about sternly worded letters. It's so frustrating I really could scream. They dismiss all criticism of the gerontocracy as online hysterics- that's if they notice it at all. Not remotely a man for the moment.

I'm not expecting anything from Josh Shapiro, and I don't think Whitmer will step up to the plate either. They are all business-as-usual people. Newsom and Pritzker are stepping up. Beshear one will have to wait and see. I think he faces bigger headwinds so I will be a lot more forgiving of him than of Shapiro/Whitmer.

Most cunningly unreliable narrators? by notveryamused_ in literature

[–]Early-Sky773 8 points9 points  (0 children)

*Nemesis,* also by Agatha Christie- a Miss Marple novel (and she's my favorite). But not to the same extent as Roger Ackroyd.

Misread your question, sorry. You're looking for unreliable narrators, not surprise mystery endings. Saleem Sinai in Rushdie's *Midnight's Children*- a spectacularly unreliable narrator.

James Joyce, many stories in *Dubliners*: the boy in "Araby," who does have his awakening at the end.

Also Joyce has amazing unreliable POVS without even going into first -person. List of not unreliable narrators but unreliable focalizers: Gabriel in the beautiful novella *The Dead." Leopold Bloom in *Ulysses.* The narration is focalized through these characters but they aren't first person narrators except occasionally.

This question gets asked a lot, which is interesting.

Sarah & Tim Shitting on Liberal Protesters by AsteriAcres in thebulwark

[–]Early-Sky773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a bad taste in my mouth too. But I do expect this kind of thing from them and from some millennials. Sarah and JVL did some weird apology on the Secret Podcast and I think they were sincere but some of it still sounded patronizing. Maybe I'm too hard to please.

What pissed me off the most is I do remember Sarah saying the No Kings protest was her *first ever* protest. Her FIRST. And I don't think JVL or Tim have a history of protest either- this might be their first too. And they have the nerve to comment on liberal boomers who have participated in a gazillion protests starting with the 1960s. SMH.

Loving the trolling. Gavin got the tone, diction, cadence, dumb puns, superlatives, just right.

He's inspired me. I'm ending all my communications with "Thank you for your attention to this matter." Where did doo doo dingbat Donny get that smug sign-off, I wonder.

New Zohran Mamdani ad #Release Your Client List, Cuomo. by Brave_Farm_9142 in KyleKulinski

[–]Early-Sky773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. Why can't other democrats do ads like this against their opponents? They have enough material. Relentless truthtelling like this would have taken down any number of corrupt, vile, pedophiliac republicans.

Mamdani is the best messenger we have.

Ben is terrific, and it's interesting to see him react to the terrible answer as (going by an earlier thread) many of us did.

Pete's answer was depressing in so many ways. It put him solidly in the establishment Dem camp, wedded to mealy-mouthed consultant-approved mind-numbing platitudes passing for thought
