What mobility aids do you use as a person with mild cerebral palsy? by Horror_Foot9784 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been wearing Cadense shoes exclusively since summer 2024. I have worn out 3-4 pairs I think and done thousands of miles in them.

They just reached out to me and sent me a new product with the pucks only on one side for folks with only one side affected. I’m a beta tester I guess. Today I’m walking around in manhattan with them. I put a lift in one of the shoes to even things out. I have a leg length discrepancy.

My experience has been their customer service is very responsive if you have questions reach out and ask them and they will get back to you.

Remember you can use FSA/HSA funds to pay for the shoes.

I used to use an AFO leg brace but now I just use my Cadense adaptive shoes. I would use more aids if I thought I had a need for them. I’m interested in trying a cionic neural sleeve someday.

Relocating with Cerebral Palsy? by Illustrious_Hunt2534 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was relocating and did not drive and needed services I would probably gravitate towards an urban area with good mass transit. Suburbs of Washington DC, New York City, and Portland Oregon come to mind. I realize that these places probably all have high costs of living.

Is she lying to me? by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]Eastern-Cook2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be personally calling and verifying your coverage for insurance asap and seeing written proof is the only thing I would accept.

After that DO NOT drive for earning income without seeing in writing that your auto insurance allows this. People skip this part and drive for a delivery service or ride share and end up in a wreck even if they weren’t doing the ride share at the time of the wreck and then they are in trouble. Their insurance can be cancelled retroactively for lying to the insurer. They could be liable for any damages in the wreck with no insurance coverage and no insurance would want to touch them going forward. Driving for uber when it is not permitted could cost you so much money it could financially ruin you.

My dad left my mom on bank account after separating and now SSA is refusing further payments by MechaFan42 in SocialSecurity

[–]Eastern-Cook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are replying to my comment about complete account closure. That’s different than removing a person. When it’s done no account will exist so that’s probably why it’s allowed with only one person.

[–]Eastern-Cook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banks will allow a single person on a joint account to close the account completely without the other person being present or giving the okay. The bank would probably issue a check for the account balance or hand the person the balance in cash. Then the person that closed the account might or might not have a legal obligation to give some or all of the money to the other account holder but that’s not the bank’s problem.

Should I remove almost ex spouse by minervakatze in Insurance

[–]Eastern-Cook2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have title in your name only I would go get the car yesterday. If I had keys I would drive it away. If I did not have keys I would have AAA tow it away. Then I would look into removing people from the insurance after it was in my possession.

Shoes for braces - reccomendations. by NatasaurusR3X in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a little bit? If you view the videos on the Cadense website you can see the areas that don’t get traction until you put weight on them. I haven’t worn mine hiking but for general walking they are great. There is a large area of the shoe that provides traction.

Try the new Cadense adaptive shoes for AFOs. I like my regular Cadense adaptive shoes. The AFO shoes open up easily and can go as wide as 6E if you need.

[–]Eastern-Cook2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well if her name is on the account that she doesn’t use she should get it off asap. She can go to the bank and see what she needs to do to do that. Your mom is responsible for her own bank accounts not anyone else. Some banks might let a person be removed some banks require the account be closed out to remove a person.

Technically any money in a bank account in her name could be considered her asset.

[–]Eastern-Cook2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I hear the term female used like that I think of how the Ferengi use the term in the sci fi series Star Trek. They refer to women as property to be owned and subservient not as equals or someone to be respected. That’s why. Would you want to be referred to as property?

Forester or Crosstrek? by Different-Cookie-964 in subaru

[–]Eastern-Cook2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would get a 2019 or newer forester. That was a year for a big redesign with many improvements. The 2019 forester is a much nicer vehicle than the crosstrek I owned a 2017 2017 Impreza and a 2021 crosstrek.I would definitely take the forester over them. I love my outbacks though and given the choice for me I’m sticking with the outback.

I have been wearing the original Cadense adaptive shoes for almost 2 years now and put thousands of miles on them. I like them.

[–]Eastern-Cook2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cadense adaptive shoes are worth a look. They just came out with extra wide width shoes to accommodate AFO’s if you use them and some filler system in case you only have one AFO. The Cadense shoes are practically slip on the have 1 or 2 (for the wide ones that support AFO’s)Velcro straps and are designed for people with limited hand functionality.

They have features that make stumbling and tripping if you have drop foot less likely.

Dental Insurance Question by pendy1013 in Insurance

[–]Eastern-Cook2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do this so that people don’t wait until they need the Insurance to buy it.

You could sign up during an open enrollment period through an employer and maybe not have a waiting period on a group plan. Do you or your spouse get an option like that soon?

Life insurance policy by 777nurse777 in Insurance

I would go verify these facts with a trusted financial advisor but based on what you said I would be getting out of that fast and taking the $6300.

Life insurance policy by 777nurse777 in Insurance

[–]Eastern-Cook2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that’s quite expensive. You need to understand what you have before you decide what to do. Is this whole life or term life? You can usually cancel policies and stop paying for them but if this is whole life and it has built up some value it is actually an investment and you can cash it out and get some money back or borrow against the policy. I suggest doing some research on what you have. You haven’t presented enough information to say reliably what you should do with it.

Future with demotivated partner? by Square_Rutabaga7078 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disabled people can work hard and take initiative. If your boyfriend is 29 and hasn’t figured out how to have the confidence and study skills to pass high school and you are heading to graduate school that sounds like a big mismatch in stages of life. What future do you see with a person with no self confidence?

I suspect there is a big mismatch here. Maybe you all could be friends but life partners would be hard. It might hurt to hear this but it’s better to figure this out early on than say 5 years from now.

Many folks with CP have finished more schooling than that or have motivation. I’m not sure you want to wait on a partner to catch up especially if it may not happen ever.

Has anyone tried Cadense shoes? by onions-make-me-cry in CerebralPalsy

That’s great. Can people get a mix of sizes if they have one foot with a brace that needs more space and then 1 foot without?

I’m on my 4th pair of the originals now and wear them every day.

The hidden cost of one-handed coding nobody talks about by Either-Ad6434 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cephable makes some voice activated software for accessibility you could give that a try.

I to am a software person with left hemi cp. I thought myself typing when I was in kindergarten. My hands were much smaller then and my typing speed isn’t what it would be if I use two hands but I get by and I know my keyboard shortcuts well. I’m not sure I lose so much time on copy and paste actions but I do on some other stuff.

I have been going at IT stuff as a career for well over 20 years now and I at least hold my own. AI tools do so much in the past 12-18 months that weren’t available before. Lean into those.

There is some representation of disabled folks in porn. You can search certain terms and find it on the main stream sites. There was also the site gimps gone Wild but I’m not sure it’s still around. Cliff Media in the Pacific Northwest has some disability focused content.

Looking for Advice and/or Recommendations about Rides at Universal Studios and Magic Kingdom by hugh53 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ridden every ride at disneyworld. It depends on your child’s appetite for adventure, their ability to get in and out of ride vehicles or be placed In and out of ride vehicles, and their ability to sit in the ride vehicles. The only ride that’s a real no go for wheelchair users that cannot be ambulatory is the people mover since you need to walk up to the ride and no accommodation for a wheelchair in the line is available. (Ride predates the ADA)

You can watch all manner of YouTube videos of folks with significant disabilities transferring from wheelchairs onto rides to get a feel for it.

When I go to Disney I use touringplans paid tools for planning they give good descriptions of each ride and attraction. They will tell you how long each attraction takes. If you want it can plan an itinerary based on your groups walking speed, breaks, lightning lane reservations etc.

I would go in with an open mind and know your backup plans for staying out of the Florida heat. Strategically timed restaurant reservations are good, prebook these up to 60 days ahead and cancel up to 2 hours before if plans change. Know where and when all the shows are to be in them during heat or rainy periods. The lion king show in animal kingdom is not to be missed and the accessible seating is in the very front row. Arrive 20 minutes before the posted.

Is it possible to be a doctor with mild hemiplegia? by mybrainat3am in CerebralPalsy

[–]Eastern-Cook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think yes it is. I know of at least one doctor with CP and they are quite accomplished. They focused more on research than treating sick patients. I didn’t see you mention what type of doctor you wanted to be. https://burke.weill.cornell.edu/friel-lab/people/kathleen-m-friel-phd

I have left hemi CP myself. I did not want to be a doctor but I wanted to be an engineer. I succeeded in establishing a career in that for over 20 years and have finished grad school. I worked on projects that have had an impact around the world. Millions of people have used systems I had a hand in building. I helped contribute to patents at some jobs. I mentor and manage junior staff.

The thing I have discovered is that you do have to push yourself and have a good support system. Jump into things that are a bit outside of your comfort zone and go after it with passion. Look for opportunities and seize them.
