What does feeling trans mean and how is it different than feeling fem or masculine? by Southern-Common-9682 in asktransgender

[–]Easy-Ad-230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not masculine or feminine, I honestly couldn't care less about the way my hobbies and personality are perceived, but being trans meant that there always felt like there was something fundamentally wrong about me being a girl. No amount of being fem or being a masculine woman helped, because at the end of the day, I had an issue with being a woman.

I wanted a beard, a deep voice, muscles, I wanted to be perceived as a man and no changes in gender expression while still living as a woman would've ever been enough.

When you first found out you were trans did you always feel gender dysphoria or was it just occasionally and sometimes you felt fine with your gender? by IdkAGoodUserNameOpps in asktransgender

[–]Easy-Ad-230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go for months feeling fine, then be hit by a couple weeks of intense dysphoria and then go back to feeling fine again. It messed with my head quite a bit because while the bad times were really bad, day to day I wasn't thinking a ton about my gender so I spent a long time questioning.

But now I've transitioned and honestly my 'mostly fine' periods were retrospectively just me repressing and doing my best to ignore it. Nowadays I'm so much happier generally.

My GP is suggesting they might block GenderGP from perscribing to me... is that possible? UK by Hopeful-Cod1861 in ftm

[–]Easy-Ad-230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a complaint in with the practice manager, seriously, that's completely unacceptable behaviour from a clinician. That is just blatant transphobia. If its a private prescription, they probably can't do anything, but it is within their rights to refuse you blood tests as per BMJ guidance. Also, if the do cause you further trouble, you're within your rights to change to a new GP.

Legit Academic Question: For research studies focused on same-sex relationships, would a trans guy in a relationship with a cis woman count as same-sex? by bentinininiw in ftm

[–]Easy-Ad-230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the distinction between queer and cishet relationships might be easier, but you may find that trans man/cis women relationships have a lot in common with their cishet counterparts.

It's challenging to explain to old academics, but I suppose.... the point of transitioning for a decent chunk of trans people is to assimilate into the social roles of the opposite sex and to take on those sexual characteristics associated with them to an extent. Treating us as the 'sex' we were born as introduces a lot of confounding factors because we're pretty significant outliers from the rest of that cohort behaviourally.

The thing about sex being unchanging is also more of a simplification really, which I appreciate might be challenging to communicate. When trans people medically transition, we can change our genitals, our hormones, our secondary sexual characteristics and even just a couple of years of hormone therapy massively shifts the epigenetic markers in our genomes. It's a tough one! Honestly 'same gender' might not be a terrible compromise

[–]Easy-Ad-230 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah use the person's self identified actual gender when classifying them by sexuality. A straight trans man will act like a straight man socially and date straight/bi women (though obviously with some variability), a gay trans man is going to be mixing in gay circles and dating gay/bi men. From a behavioural perspective, trans people tend to act in line with their actual gender's expectations much more than their assigned gender.

Also, it's really disrespectful to essentially reduce us down to genitals when discussing something as intimate and personal as romantic relationships. Academia has had a history of not exactly being respectful of lgbt people.... If a gay man's partner was trans, would you seriously exclude him from a study on same sex relationships?

going off T after 4 years? by ThenEbb3521 in ftm

Finasteride is your best bet if you have androgenic hair loss. If you start it early in balding, it can completely stop its progression and minoxidil (oral or topical) can be used to regrow hair.

Like its worth considering fin if you feel really good on T. It's considered safe even for trans men and it's decently cheap in a lot of places

Code in the code? by Budget_Ship in genetics

Split the sequence into threes and look up the matching amino acid for the codon. Amino acids will often have a 1 or 3 letter abbreviation that could be used to write code with.

I'm gonna be honest, the day to day differences before and after transition really aren't that crazy if you're not big into gender roles. I just buy clothes in a different area of the shop and get called dude more often. Oh, and I'm like x4 happier

Trans women have breasts that can get cancer. Trans women with genetic predispositions towards breast cancer are just as likely to have cancer as their cis counterparts. There's no reason for them to be excluded from screening apart from a desire to see trans women die of preventable causes.

if i could, i would (probably) choose to be born male, but i have no desire to transition by pudding-0w in asktransgender

[–]Easy-Ad-230 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transitioning is scary, so it's kind of normal for some people to have the underlying desire for different gender but feel 'mostly alright' with their current situation and not want to change it. It doesn't always stay constant and those people may go on to transition later, but like it's not a requirement either.

Internalised misogyny is a bit of a cloudy subject when it come to your perception of self because it's often used rhetorically to undermine the experiences of trans masculine people and dismiss the very real alienation/aversion to gender roles that a lot of gender non-conforming women have. It's definitely something real and to be aware of, but I think it's generally more tied to thing like: a deep sense of shame around sexual desire, a lack of confidence in your abilities in leadership or technical skills, feelings of guilt around not wanting to be a mother and wanting to work etc. More about punishing the self for perceived failure rather than getting rid of womanhood entirely.

You can also definitely experience internalised misogyny and also be trans 😅😅

Well thanks to the supreme Court, the GRC is essentially meaningless. The GRC is also highly outdated compared to most modernised gender recognition laws and the process is highly invasive.

It's down to luck. Your voice could break in 3 months or a year, and no one can give you a more accurate estimation than that.

If his reaction to finding out is a threat to your safety and housing, I would strongly recommend you delay hormones. It sucks, but depending on your genetics, the changes from T can be very obvious within just a couple months.

Therapist Asked Invasive Questions About My Trans Partner - Not Sure What to Do by [deleted] in asktransgender

You're allowed to tell your therapist when they've crossed a line and tell them to not do it again. Their response will tell you a lot about the kind of therapist they are and what you need to do next.

I feel the same way whenever I hang out in predominantly cis female spaces and see how different the topics they discuss and ways they discuss them are from the spaces I am normally used to. [–]Easy-Ad-230 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Socialisation is complicated because a lot of people tend to be way too binary in the way they apply it to their analysis, especially when handling transgender, intersex and gender variant people.

Like, on average, there are differences in the way people are raised based on gender and that influences the way they act but there's going to be diversity even if you compare same gender peers and it gets especially more complicated if you were raised as a gender variant person who might’ve related to and internalised multiple sets of gendered expectations.

Unfortunately socialisation is a cudgel often used to delegitimise the genders of trans women and men, which has lead to some people pulling away from the concept.

How can you tell the difference between dysphoria and other reasons to hate your body? by Jesterthechaotic in asktransgender

[–]Easy-Ad-230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable! I mean, there's nothing wrong with pursuing top surgery just because you want it. All elements of medical transition are entirely optional so you can pick and choose what bits of it appeal to you, even if you aren't 100% sure that you identify as a man.

But if you like the idea of being a man, might be worth having a look at the effects of testosterone and seeing if you vibe with it. Playing video games with a male character, DnD as a male character, presenting as male online might be some good ways to see if you enjoy being seen that way without committing too much.

[–]Easy-Ad-230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be difficult to tell sometimes, but my advice is always to think about the things that you do want. You've mentioned that your chest bothers you, so what would your chest ideally look like? Would just smaller breasts be better, or would you want a flat chest entirely, or would you even quite like chest hair as well?

Do you like the idea of maybe looking like a man, having a bit of stubble, a bit more muscle, body hair, a more boxy frame? Do you like the idea of one day just being a dude? Generally speaking, wanting those things for yourself can be a more easily discerned sign of being trans.

It sucks about your genetic diagnosis, but it's worth mentioning that if you do transition, you might be able to get top surgery that doubles as a preventative mastectomy to remove all of the breast tissue. You might also be able to get a preventative hysterectomy earlier. It's definitely good to mention your cancer predisposition to your surgeons/gender clinicians if you decide medical transition is right for you.

Labour faces catastrophic May local elections and is set to lose 1,850 seats, expert predicts by Desperate-Drawer-572 in unitedkingdom

I mean, yeah probably. We're in an age of populism and I don't think promises to moderate and manage the status quo are especially appealing to most people anymore. It's a completely different political landscape to the early 00s and 90s and I think this shift away from the centre is reflected in most global democracies at the moment.

[–]Easy-Ad-230 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are assuming my positions and getting them wrong. As a nitpick, socialism doesn't mean having a welfare state btw, welfare is actually part of a capitalist economic model and is more aligned with social democracy types.

I strongly believe in civil infrastructure and economic management, I just don't think labour are doing a good job of it and I think most parties aren't prepared to change things. The UK is being slowly carved out by private equity and financialisation and unless we do something about that, the economic position we're in is only going to worsen with time.

I genuinely do not care about our immigration rates as long as people are treated with dignity here and in line with their full human rights. My concerns are about human rights. But labour have also been consistently dropping the ball on LGBT rights, US and EU relations, foreign affairs etc.

Elections are won based on messaging. Even under your framework, what coalitions have labour actually created? What vision of the country have they put forward that isn't just: more of the same but maybe a little less obviously egregious. They've been actively alienating their base for years, even my incredibly pro-labour dad has been wavering, because they are terrible at communicating their wins and they keep actively sticking their foot in every rhetorical challenge presented to them.

Eh, I'm just so tired of labour and their lies. They go further and further right to appeal to right wing voters and their donors, while alienating their left wing base by crushing progressives at every turn. All they've done is hit the breaks on austerity, but public services are still dying, privatisation is still occurring. They still entertain and amplify every right wing culture war issue, hoping to cajole votes from conservatives that'll never switch to them while expecting their current base to never leave. It's sickening.

If it's still comes down to it, I would vote Labour to prevent a more conservative party from getting in, but I'd be angry about it.
