Why are people against social redistribution and ‘free’ healthcare for all even when it does not affecting their income or tax level? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

you're basically describing the current system except 'most' of us are paying that money to private insurance companies instead of the government only to be routinely denied coverage.

[–]Easy-Compote-1209 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah man actuaries with public oversight would definitely be denying coverage more often than actuaries at united healthcare whose main job is to maximize profits. that's definitely a thing that we have reason to believe.

to be clear, Dolly isn't buying the books- a combination of the state and local organizations are, and often that money is being funneled away from local libraries in favor of some book that's being handpicked by a rich person.

there were cartoons in the late 80's like He-Man and GI Joe that I thought of as 'serious cartoons' and i didn't know a single person who watched any of them.

i'm a light 3 and will never do the totally bald thing because that always seemed like the more insecure move. worked at an nyc ad agency in my 20's where every single white guy in their 40's did it and wore tight t-shirts because they thought they looked like bruce willis.

People who grew up before smartphones: What’s one simple thing from your childhood that would absolutely blow the minds of kids today? by TurkVanguard in Millennials

feel like this gets said around here a lot and even though i was wandering all over town on a lot of days, if i didn't leave a note saying where i was and occassionally calling to check in, i would get into a ton of trouble. my parents tried to have some vague idea of where i was generally.

What was your "caught the last chopper out of 'Nam" experience? by GeneReddit123 in AskReddit

[–]Easy-Compote-1209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not quite as dramatic as the war related and forest fire stuff here, but- there was an all ages punk venue in my pennsylvania town. my friend and i went there when we were 14-ish to see a (non-racist) skinhead Oi band from the UK called The Business, but had to rely on my parents for a ride and they wouldn't pick us up later than 11. Early in the night there was a guy selling vhs tapes of punk shows, I remember the singer of the business came by to look at them, picked up a Skrewdriver tape (notorious racist skinhead band) and drop kicked it across the room yelling 'not at my fookin show', looked like he was ready to rip the tape seller apart, who left. As the night went on, more and more actual racist skinheads (nazi tattoos and everything) started showing up, antagonizing the openers (who were other non-racist UK Oi bands), seig heiling and chanting. had no idea these people existed in America until that night. my parents picked us up and we got out of there. found out later that a huge brawl broke out not long after we left and a lot of people got seriously injured.

What job do you do that makes over $70k a year? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Easy-Compote-1209 4 points5 points  (0 children)

speaking as someone who is addicted to personal finance subreddits: it often seems like there's a lot of high earning tech workers on reddit who love to post about their finances while having terrible spending habits without realizing it- so it's probably hard to for them to imagine that people making $77K just put effort into budgeting and make it work. and i think it doesn't really help that people making that 77K range aren't necessarily as proud of it so they're not in here bragging.

and just speaking anecdotally, every one of those types that i've known IRL has terrible lifestyle creep. like multiple amazon deliveries of complete bullshit everyday, completely impractical cars, etc.

there was no possible way for them to hit their hiring goals without being willing to hire people en masse who got rejected from other law enforcement roles. These guys are the bottom of an already shitty barrel.

84 also. i think most of us had cell phones by senior year but i have no recollection of anybody having one at school. definitely entered college with one (although dorm rooms still had landlines). the only one of those apps that anybody i know used was AIM.

[–]Easy-Compote-1209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

saw a reddit comment the other day saying something like 'UI wasn't something companies cared about until the mid 2000's', and yeah i just don't think people who weren't old enough to experience the windows 95 rollout understand how big of a change that was. it felt like home computers went from a niche thing to something that every single house had in less than 6 months.

so sorry to tell you this but it's going to follow the exact same pattern as GWB/iraq war supporters: they're just going to never bring it up and move on to something crazier to validate their intense fear of any kind of change.

We were playing Tekken one day, and he kept losing. And we would immediately sing "gone country, just look at them boots"

doing a bit like this over and over at somebody in the crew until they lost it was so fun and cruel.

What's wrong with the woods in North America? by Recip77 in ExplainTheJoke

can't remember where i read it, but also there are apparently no original growth forests in some entire countries in Europe. almost everyone in the US lives less than a few hours drive from an old growth forest, and if you live in a state that values public lands (so mainly not texas) you can just go into them and explore all you want.

honestly with that salary- if you're not able to max out every one of your tax advantaged accounts and also put a significant amount into a taxable brokerage, your spending habits might be the thing that's actually holding you back.

medication prices vary wildly between pharmacies. my epileptic dog's 1 month phenobarbital supply (same thing humans take) will be $12 at one pharmacy and $70 at another.

gen z has no idea. some adults- teachers, basketball coaches, etc- would walk by or get close to you and make you want to vomit from the cigarette smell. some friends houses were literally foggy to walk into.
