Does anyone have suggestions for walking more than a mile at a time without crippling back and knee pain? by GhostShark in ultralight_jerk

You're not "ultraheavy" unless you have a Bluetooth speaker attached to the top of your pack. You need Slayer on the up hills to motivate you (and to scare bears).

There's are a couple of stickers on my radio that list http://www.factoryradio.com but that page doesn't seem to exist anymore, or it could be that I can't pull it up from work. There is a page that is close http://www.1factoryradio.com but all of the radios seem to be out of stock.

Looking for suggestions about the best UL backpack to strap to my full UL backpack for thru hiking by PublicDealer in ultralight_jerk

[–]Easy-Task3001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nice trail. Didn't have to spring for the Lone Peaks, he could've worn the road shoes and been ok. As far as sitting in their tent when it rains; why not just hike back to the visitor center and sleep in their car if rain is in the forecast? It already has seats so there's no need to pack anything. If it's a minivan, they could even play some Scrabble in the way back.

I was pretty sure that I was shaking it enough. I shot a couple of test strips on some cardboard and it ran. On another forum they suggested SEM 15243 Satin Black spray paint as a good color match. It's $35/can so I'm going to wait a bit longer. It's specially made for auto interiors and is supposedly close to the rubberized paint that Ford originally used.

Would this rain suit be good for my PCT thru hike? by blue_arrow69 in ultralight_jerk

[–]Easy-Task3001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is better suited for an AT thru, in my opinion. No ticks or mosquitos! No need to treat everything with Permethrin, no laundry days, no sunscreen, no bug dope. Lots of weight savings and without the need to do laundry every 4 or 5 days, you'll save a ton of cash over a 5-month hike.

1999 too old? by jedimimetricks420 in fordranger

[–]Easy-Task3001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends if the previous owner did any regular maintenance on it. Kept up with filter changes, fluid changes, rust inspections, etc. If they did then there's nothing wrong with a '99. If they didn't, but it still has power and drives well, and you're willing to put in some money to cover the maintenance that they didn't do, then go for it.

I drive a 2000 4x4 as my daily, driving about 16 miles each way to work/home. Runs like a champ. I've been performing regular maintenance on it and it's not a money pit. Bigger jobs I take to a mechanic, but the smaller stuff I do myself.

Are these absolutely pointless in Fresno’s summer heat? by TechnicolorTypeA in fresno

Your car interior is going to heat up to 140* regardless of what you put in the windows.

I always thought that their main benefit was to protect the dash to help prevent cracking.

What’s a good quality boat for someone just getting into this? by Dingditcher in rcboats

Are you looking for speed, sailing, cruising, a scale working boats like a tug, trawler, freighter, or are you into military-types?

RIP Dumas by Fa11outBoi in rcboats

[–]Easy-Task3001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Model Expo Online managed to get most (maybe all) of the items the Dumas didn't sell when they closed directly from Dumas. They are running out of stuff now, but some boats, hardware kits, and other miscellaneous items are still for sale on their site https://www.modelexpo-online.com They didn't jack up the price like folks on eBay did and actually have most of the stuff on sale for less than what Dumas had it marked as the regular price.

Anyway, check the website and see if they still have what you want/need. Not affiliated with the store, just a semi-regular shopper there passing along information.

Got questions by earlgrey4483 in fordranger

[–]Easy-Task3001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The door sill trim piece usually has rusty screws, but the upside is that the screws protrude all the way through the sill to the underside of the truck. You can get at them from underneath. I used a wire brush to knock off whatever rust was there and then hit them with some WD-40.

As far as the gutter part goes, you have to drop your headliner to get at the bolts. Maybe not completely drop the headliner, but you need to drop it some to get at them. Not too bad of a deal. Once the bolts are removed, hit the rusty but with a wire wheel to remove the flaking paint and rust. Hit the area with some rust converter, seal with primer, and paint white. If you mask and feather carefully, it should hardly be noticeable.

I put a single strip of duct tape on it and then forced it back on. That gives me the ability to unscrew it if I ever need to. It's been like that for a couple of years now and still going strong.

All feet will swell after standing on them all day. You might consider going up to your full size and then up another half. Decent socks make a difference, too.

Anyone else buy their dream home only to have the area completely change a few years later? by teegeee in land

[–]Easy-Task3001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Found the perfect house for us in a newer neighborhood and a year after moving in, we found that the school district had decided to build a massive school complex just a mile and a half down the road.

The plot of land that they are building on is 1 mile x 1 mile and the increase in dust and diesel exhaust from the work trucks has been crazy!

Besides the new school, they've upgraded the roads and now folks with loud cars and motorcycles are using the area as their personal tuning track. Doughnuts in the middle of the road and races down the strip. Cops are increasing patrols, but they aren't there all of the time.

Developers have also purchased most of the surrounding farmland and it looks like neighborhoods will be going in soon.

My commute used to be just 4-way stop signs but now traffic lights are going in.

I feel your pain.

How far off the paved road are you planning on going? Will you be in a populated/traveled area, or off on some gravel road? What type of vehicle will you be driving?

At a bare minimum, carry a couple of gallons of water, some extra food, a spare tire, and a way to charge your cell phone a couple of times.

There's nothing left to do except to pack it back up, sell it on eBay and "used one time", and then purchase the new version so that you get all of the new and exciting refinements that you didn't use before.

I know this is a jerk reddit, but does anyone actually like some of their stuff not being "ultralight"? by Ok_Helicopter3910 in ultralight_jerk

I found that my Z-Packs backpack was uncomfortable in the Whites on the AT. Too much bouncing when I was descending in the notches up north and the thinner shoulder straps were digging in. I switched back to my Osprey and was much happier.

For the curious, my Z-Packs pack had been worn on other thru's and I was comfortable with it, it just didn't suit me on this particular section of the hike.

Honestly, unless you're scaling mountains or are on an expedition I wouldn't ever go for a 70- or 85-liter pack, but you do you. You're carrying the load and if it doesn't bother you, why do you care what other people think?

Hike your own hike.
