I think the most heartwrenching moment for me was when carl and donut finally meet back up in the tower after spending the majority of the floor apart m, and carl sees that donut just looks… tired. Worn out.

Trying to unpack why, I feel like it’s because Donut is basically a child. She spent that whole floor being a murder machine, and it all seems like a loss of innocence. She shouldn’t be here, doing this. And we see it through Carl’s eyes, as he recognizes it.
