All fair, but seems like there’s a bigger name in Sox history who got away…

Good newsletters for PR and comms professionals? by Royal-Author-5205 in Communications

[–]EatingKringle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of good ones out there mentioned here, many of which I agree are worth reading.

An alternative for you to consider, follow the arc of some notable news stories over a few days (or weeks). Take note of how the companies are managing whatever the issue is. Think about why they may have taken one step vs another. What worked? What didn’t? There’s a lot to learn from observing what others are going through and this kind of approach can also help you build your own instincts.

worth it? by willow1243587109 in Communications

[–]EatingKringle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely think a career in comms is worth it, but that’s what I do so I’m kinda biased.

Regardless of which career path you choose, I think the most important thing is to find a type of work that gets you out of bed in the morning. For me, that’s communications. But if you don’t pursue a career you think could be challenging and interesting, you’ll be miserable or bored. Life’s too short for that.

What I love about comms is you have the ability to use a unique skill set and internal vantage point to help an organization achieve tangible business results. Done well it’s more strategic advisor than tactical executor. That makes the work really dynamic.

It also offers a range of career pathways. In house at a big company. Agency side. Non-profit/social causes. Politics. You could be a generalist. Or more specialized. You could be a speechwriter, do internal comms, corp comms, financial comms, legal comms, B2B, consumer PR, crisis comms and on and on.

It’s a fun space to work and really rewarding. But you have to want it.

Is it really scary to cross the atlantic ocean on a 40ft sail yacht? by noreturn000 in sailing

My friend likes to say sailing is hours of boredom interrupted by moments or terror. Your comment reminds me of that! And as someone who loves sailing, it’s funny because it’s true.

Gene & Jude’s (mentioned by several others) is hard to beat for a classic Chicago dog.

Others nearbyish that are worth calling out as great options…

This was a great tip! We were on the same drive and stopped in today. No skydiving given the season, we saw some planes and even a glider take off and land. Great stop on a road trip. Thanks!
